In the current implementation, if any players are above their maximum hand size, all play is paused until all of those players have discarded. But, crucially, what they choose to discard has no bearing on any other players' decisions. All we see is that someone had too many cards, and then they had just enough.
I propose: when I have already or don't need to discard, I should be able to lock in my split. -

Report history
This would speed up the game without changing anyone's available information. Lean into the simultaneous action selection.
Unfortunately, the suggestion would require a sizeable rewrite of much of the game's code. Maybe doable in development or even alpha, but that was over a year ago.
