For reading the gamestate, it is very important to track what each player has played and who followed. When playing async, this is not done effectively. All you can see is, when it is your turn, the current active card, who played it, and who is going to follow the action.
I would suggest replacing these boxes, or adding, something like a grid. Player order across the top, from left to right. First row beneath player names is the card that player played THIS ROUND (or empty if they have not gone yet), and below that row, another row for who followed it. Possibly additional images of the card with a colored border and username.
That would allow frictionless tracking of a) where we are in the round, b) what cards have been played. And this, in turn, would make the async experience miles better and facilitate playing the game on this platform. -
