Report history
hanafudahawaii.com describes 2v2 matches (4 players in 2 teams) and 2v2v2 matches (6 players in 3 teams). Similar to Bridge (and other team-based trick-taking games), people on the same team must sit across from each other, and they share the same capture area and points, without being allowed to communicate about the cards in their hands.

fudawiki.org also describes a 3v3 variant (6 players in 2 teams), where the players from each team should be seated alternately around the table.

(You could choose not to add this one, but it's still nice to have the option if it's not much more work to implement.)
I don't think I'll work on this.
With four players, the total amount of captured cards by the end starts getting a bit small, which usually makes for a less balanced and interesting game than with 3-player hanafunda games. But sharing your captured area with another player solves that problem, and on top of that also adds an interesting interactive dimension that most hanafuda games lack. Team play was originally the main reason why I wanted to give Hawaiian hanafuda a try.
So if enough players feel the same as me, it might be more relevant to look at 3-player game statistics than 4-player ones.
That said, I have no idea how much work it would be to implement team matches. If it's a significant amount of work, not wanting to do it for a game that only few people play is of course a very valid reason.
