Sometimes one or both cards drawn from the deck appear as a mermaid.
The mouseover text says "undefined" and it turns into a different card when it goes into your hand or one of the discard piles.
If it's a genuine mermaid card then it says that it's a mermaid in the mouseover text. -

No. It happened for the first time at move 50. One card was a mermaid but both were displayed as mermaids it then happened multiple times throughout the game
