Normally, everyone should start with 15 coins. My opponent - a first time payer - started with 17 (while I only had 15). I thought this might just be wrong amount of coins shown but after buying their first card (5 cost), they still had 12 coins without gaining any coins from the card effect...

The opponent sore 17 pieces, because you took the "mécène (the big guy costing 7 pieces) that gives immediately 2 pieces to the opponent : so 15 + bonus 2 = 17
