It is right, that the current method of changing the color of the placed cube is faster than selecting the cube first and placing it after you selected a cube. But it is not intuitive.
In real life, you would never first place any cube and than change its color.
You could allow both methods: if a player clicks on one of the three cubes at the top, this would pre-select the color of the next placed cube. When a player has placed a cube (whether or not he pre-selected a color), he can switch the color of the cube by clicking the cube (as current).
So why don’t you let the players decide, whether they want first place the cube or first select the color?
Or, if you want to force all players to first place a cube and then select the color, at least pop up a message, that says „First place the cube, then you can change the color by clicking on the cube“, when a player tried to select one of the three cubes at the top.
We totally understand where you're coming from. That said, we're currently not planning to support the alternative method you suggested. It would actually slow down the interaction overall and require a more complex implementation on our side.
In fact, part of the reason we went with the current system is because it's significantly quicker once players get used to it. If we add an alternative, many players would likely never make the switch—missing out on the faster, more efficient flow.
We’ve tried to make the current method more intuitive with subtle visual cues, and we’ll keep an eye on how it’s received. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts!
Hope you’re enjoying the game :)
We understand it might feel a bit unintuitive at first, but the current system is intentional — it’s designed to be quick, efficient, and take advantage of digital flexibility rather than replicating physical constraints. Once players get used to it, it flows really smoothly.
I've also updated the switch-color icon to have a more colourful look, hoping that makes its function more clear.
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!
I almost posted a broken rule until I saw this thread. The current implementation of this game on BGA does not follow the spirit of the game.
I read the instruction manual several times trying to figure out why I couldn't choose the block order. The arrows were completely unintuitive. No where is the GUI interface explained on BGA for someone to "get used to it" and I've played a few hundred different games on BGA. I've seen other games on BGA where if there are multiple meeple choices, that the options are provided in the play bar. This is not a game where mouse click efficiency is something folks care about. We are talking about saving 3 mouse clicks that if we wanted to be technical and evaluate this efficiency argument, it's actually the same number of mouse clicks. The bottom line is that it's poor implementation and truly does need a fix. I would strongly encourage you to revisit this interface issue.
