I did not have sufficient resources (1 lumber) but i had plenty of teeth, and a 1:1 trade (step 4). But the system said "you do not have sufficient resources to buy this card" and it would not give me the trade interface.

What was the cost of the card? You can only trade exactly one time per turn, meaning with your trade rate you could only convert a single tooth to a single resource, not more.
