If I connect two border pieces that are owned by both players that game did not realize that the game was over. We checked the rules to see if the connection must be solid edge pieces, but if not the game was certainly impossible for my opponent.

At the last 4-5 moves. Only when I played a solid border piece on my opponents edge did it trigger the victory condition.
