Maybe an extra game option or temporary button to add a easily visible border around the trains for those who want that assistance?

The green here ibb.co/G02DTMG is a great example in my opinion of one's that are easy to see.
The red and blue, especially when horizontal like here ibb.co/D5w9hCQ have so little contrast that they look as flat as the route, and so are hard to distinguish.
Full screen zoom out with both greens and red/blue for comparison ibb.co/3cKwDPJ
