Instead of only offering a cross and a check mark as options for the boxes on the clue notepad sheets, add another symbol (e.g. question mark) for marking down positive “maybe” combinations. The checkmark could then be reserved for marking off the actual answer.

Report history
This strategy of provisionally eliminating a combination is explained in more detail in the Publisher's "Paint the Roses Strategy Guide" (cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0283/4324/files/PtR_Strategy_Guide.pdf). However, it relies on all players reasoning in the same way. Since a player may make an error in their reasoning (e.g. they accidentally overlooked a possibility), it's important to differentiate between a combination that is impossible because "negative" information exists, versus a combination that the group only *thinks* is less likely to be the answer.
- If you have multiple circled spaces, cross these out as they are shown to be incorrect.
In fact, if players manage to check all information correctly (which automatic note mode does) a single check symbol naturally leads to the correct answer.
