*Big Monster* takes you to an unknown, exuberant planet, where you will discover strange monsters and rare crystals, but also compete with other explorers to fulfill various missions.

NekonyancerBig Monster is an innovative *drafting game* played over *two rounds,* representing two days of exploring an unknown planet.
[blue]Whoever has the most exploration points at the end is the winner![/blue]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerAt the beginning of the game, each player must choose their starting explorer. Each explorer has different attributes.
*Select [red]the explorer on the left.[/red] Then click "confirm selection!"*3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment010tile_2 1
Nekonyancer[red]*Everyone starts a round with a hand of 10 cards.*[/red] Each round has 9 turns.
Each turn has three steps:
*1.* Select a tile from your hand.
*2.* Put the rest of your hand on another player's *[green]ship.[/green]* Players will use these hands for their next turn!
*3.* Place the tile in your player area.1myhand627fc386dcc8400myhand 6 ship_85196853 3
NekonyancerThe second step is what sets Big Monster apart from other drafting games. Instead of passing our hands around in a circle, we *choose* who we give them to, allowing for strategic blocking!2ships627fc386dcc8400
Nekonyancer*[red]Be warned though:[/red]* like most drafting games, turns are taken simultaneously, and each player's ship can only accept one player's hand.
*If you're too slow, you won't have any blocking options!*
[green][tip] You cannot place your hand on your own ship unless there is no other option.3ships627fc386dcc8400
NekonyancerWell, fudge. We were too slow, and the other players already gave their hands away. I guess our hand has to go to helljoss then.
*Select this tile from your hand. Then click on "helljoss" at the top!*2myhand_item_61627fc5c68701810myhand_item_61 16 ship_85196853 1
NekonyancerNext, we have to place our chosen tile on our board. The tile must be adjacent to a previously placed tile, and must be oriented in the same direction as all other tiles.

NekonyancerHere are some examples of illegal placement:
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_05sqyj.jpg[/img]284795355_scrollmap627fd6225ec3000
NekonyancerLet's try it!
*Place the tile to the left of your explorer, like so:*
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_3yIxSE.jpg[/img]
*Then click "Place Tile" at the top!*3tile_e_2627fd6225ec3010
Nekonyancer[blue]*Great! That was one full turn.*[/blue]
We picked up this new hand of cards from our ship, so we're ready for the next turn!1myhand62800fc846bcd00
Nekonyancer[red]Aw, man! We're the slowest player again![/red] :(
Oh well.
We'll select this tile. There's a bug in the tutorial, so just *click continue!*1myhand_item_4862802a492e3e900myhand_item_48 16
Nekonyancer*Place the tile to the left of your previously placed tile, like so:*
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_scorIt.jpg[/img]
*Then click on "Place Tile" at the top!*1tile_e_2628096c15728a10
Nekonyancer*Great!* That's two turns done.
After another 7 turns, the round will end. Everyone will get a new 10-card hand for Round 2. At the end of that round, points will be counted up. Simple enough, right?
*Next, let's get into how the specifics of the tiles and how they score!*1tile_e_26281371b5ac7600
NekonyancerYou probably noticed that each monster is on a different sort of *terrain.*
For example, [blue]*these monsters*[/blue] are only found in deserts. And [red]*these*[/red] are only in lava areas.2myhand_item_566281371b5ac7600myhand_item_48 1 myhand_item_56 2 myhand_item_67 2 myhand_item_69 2
Nekonyancer*These are medals* - rewards for getting a certain number of terrain tiles.
For example, if you're the first player to get 5 lava tiles, you can take [red]*this medal*[/red] for 5 points!
You can hover over each medal for more information.
Next, we'll go over the specific monsters.4medals6281371b5ac7600medal_5_1 1
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_bYAQBH.jpg[/img]
*[red]Dragon monsters (Lava terrain)*[/red]
--- Dragons always give a few points on their own. They're also surrounded by *crystal fragments,* which can give you more points if they're completed!5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6281371b5ac7600
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_L3tHlA.jpg[/img]
[green]Green fragments link horizontally and grant *2 points.*
[red]Red fragments link vertically and grant *5 points.*
[blue]Blue fragments must link both horizontally AND vertically, requiring *4 fragments* for *10 points!*684795355_scrollmap6281371b5ac7600
NekonyancerWe're already on our way to completing a couple [blue]*blue crystals!*[/blue]
coyyy, the yellow player, is working on some red and green crystals!7tile_e_26281371b5ac7600
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_wXSipr.jpg[/img]
*[blue]Mutant monsters (ice terrain)*[/blue] are only worth a few points on their own.
--- But if you combine them with [red]*mutagenic tiles,*[/red] like these...
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_WFveGQ.jpg[/img]9archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6281371b5ac7600
Nekonyancer... they mutate into *[red]more valuable monsters!*[/red]
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_bcISq9.jpg[/img]
And with a second mutagenic tile, most of them can mutate *even further!*
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_odJxin.jpg[/img]
The blue one only mutates once though.10archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6281371b5ac7600
NekonyancerIn order to do this, the mutagenic tile has to be placed correctly. It must be adjacent to the mutant monster, and [red]*the mutagenic rays must be going in the correct direction!*[/red]
Giak81, the blue player, positioned his tiles incorrectly. His mutagenic tile has the rays pointing downward, so his monster didn't mutate.
*What a waste!*1185196853_scrollmap6281371b5ac7600tile_e_1 7
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_AB687w.jpg[/img]
[blue]*Big monster (Lake)*[/blue]
--- *This monster is so big, you'll have to assemble it yourself!*
Each half is worth just 1 point by itself. But if you put 1 and 1 together, you get... *11 points!* I guess math works differently on this planet!12archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6281371b5ac7600
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_AHPoXy.jpg[/img]
[blue]*Swamp Monster (Swamp)*[/blue]
--- Each swamp monster tile has 1 swamp monster *AND* gives you 2 points per swamp monster you have! Those points ramp up *fast!*13archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6281371b5ac7600
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_eFbGtJ.jpg[/img]
[green]*Grassland monsters (Grassland)*[/green]
---
There are many different grassland monsters. Each one gives you a different sort of bonus!14archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6281371b5ac7600
Nekonyancer [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_eOGvis.jpg[/img]
*[blue]Desert monster (desert)[/blue]*
--- These monsters don't do anything. All their points come from [red]*the two desert medals!*[/red]15medals6281371b5ac7600medal_3_1 1 medal_7_1 1
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_h40djP.jpg[/img]
[/blue]*Rune monsters (Rune terrain)*[/blue]
--- Rune monsters do not give any points, but they are helpful for pursuing medals *and* are surrounded by *crystal fragments!*16archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6281371b5ac7600
Nekonyancer*That's all the monsters!*
Next, we need to learn about different *game modes.*
The standard is *individual mode,* and is played with 2-6 players.17archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6281371b5ac7600
Nekonyancer[blue]*Team mode*[/blue] can be played with 4 or 6 players. In this mode, only each team's lower score will be counted. *Medals* are adjusted so that they count the total number of terrain tiles for each team.18archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6281371b5ac7600
Nekonyancer*[blue]2-3 player games[/blue]* don't use the drafting mechanic you've learned. Instead, one player will be presented with *two series* to choose from, each having *4* or *6* tiles (for 2 or 3 player games).
After selecting a series, the player will select one tile and destroy one tile. The next player will do the same.
[green][tip] The first player will rotate constantly to keep things fair.19archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6281371b5ac7600
Nekonyancer[blue]*And that's it! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial for Big Monster!*[/blue]
If you have any comments or questions about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message!
A big thank you goes out to *nicotacotac* for bringing this game to BGA!
Have fun! :D20archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6281371b5ac7600
