ScribalWelcome to Coal Baron. We are shift managers assigning workers to mine coal in order to fulfill contracts.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
ScribalAt the start of the game, we need to select our starting contract cards. Let's look at what the icons mean. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ede24336c5.26890046.jpg[/img] The pictured card is worth [green]9 points[/green]. It requires [red]two black coal[/red] to complete, and it must be delivered using [blue]the Barrow.[/blue] Hmm, you know, that contract looks pretty good. click on the third card and confirm.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment010coal-slot-9-0 16
ScribalThe first card we selected had the Barrow icon on it. Let's get another one of those. Click on the second card which requires 2 brown coal and scores us 5 points. Select the card and then click confirm.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66c0a96bd230810coal-slot-6-0 16
ScribalOur opponent took the last order card with a barrow on it. For our final order card, let's click on the first card. It requires one of each type of coal and scores 10 points when delivered with the Carriage. Select the card. Don't forget to click confirm.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66c108662ba7610coal-slot-32-2 16
ScribalWe start the game with [blue]one of each color of coal in our mines[/blue].1joker-8060685866c1098da652700meeple-19 2 meeple-20 2 meeple-21 2 meeple-22 2
ScribalWe need to add coal to our mine in order to fulfill our orders. To fulfill the orders we have, we need 2 more brown coal and 2 more black coal. The tile in the bottom left with the two brown lorries looks good. Click on it to get that tile and then click Confirm and place 1 worker(s).2factory_566c1098da652710
ScribalEach of the brown lorries cost 2 francs, so that tile costs 4 francs. We started with 10 francs. Notice that the tile was played to the right side of our mine shaft. That's because it has no light. Some of the tiles you'll buy have lights and this is important for end game scoring. More on that at the end of the tutorial.1tile-1266c109c0ea85d00
Scribal[tip] [red]The yellow and black[/red] starting coal are unlit, but the [blue]brown and grey[/blue] both have lights. We're going to fast forward a bit.2meeple-1966c109c0ea85d00meeple-19 1 meeple-20 2 meeple-21 2 meeple-22 1
ScribalWe have enough coal in our mine that we can start filling orders to prepare them for shipping. This requires we collect coal using the mining action. In a 2 player game, there are two spaces that give us mining actions. Click the spot that gives us 10 mining actions. Don't forget to click confirm and place 1 worker.1mining_1066c10b5c851ba10
ScribalDue to the way the tutorial works, I will not take you through using all 10 actions. We are going to load 1 coal and then unload 1 coal. There are 4 levels we can move to in order to collect coal. Click on the second red square to take us to the brown level. You may want to minimize this window to see the entire mine shaft.1elevator-80606858-level-266c10b7cab1c810
ScribalNormally, you would click the [blue]left brown cube,[/blue] but that doesn't work in the tutorial, so click continue. [tip] During a normal game, it does not matter which tile you take the coal from.1meeple-2066c10b82a728f00meeple-20 2
ScribalWe have moved the elevator twice and loaded 5 pieces of coal, using 7 of our 10 mining actions. Click on the top red square to take the elevator back to the top of the mine shaft.1elevator-80606858-level-066c10b8d79aed10
ScribalIn order to place coal on the contract cards, you'll click on the contract that you want to fill. You do not need to select the piece of coal you want to move. Moving each piece of coal requires one mining action. Again, this step doesn't work in the tutorial.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66c10b90abd4b00
ScribalWe have fully loaded coal onto the first contract card and used all 10 mining actions. Delivering is a separate action and we'll see that in a little bit, after we've added more coal to our contracts.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66c10b9607a5b00
ScribalI think it's time to get another contract. In the 2 player game, there are 3 visible contract cards to chose from. I'd like to get another Barrow order and we don't have any of those visible, so let's use this other spot. It will draw 5 contract cards and we can pick one. Unfortunately, this spot isn't working in the tutorial, so I'll click it for you.1order_draw66c10bd8788d800
ScribalWe got lucky. We drew 2 order cards with the Barrow icon on them. At the end of the round, there's a scoring for the majority of each coal delivered. We've already got a Barrow card with brown coal, so let's select the first card that requires a single grey coal to fulfill and then click continue.1card-466c10c16b7f1300
ScribalWe still have 4 other cards here and they need to go back to the deck. During the game, you can chose the order they go back to the deck. Click the cards in the order specified and then place on bottom and confirm.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66c10c16b7f1310coal-slot-7-1 17 coal-slot-28-0 18 coal-slot-37-0 19 coal-slot-40-1 20
ScribalWe only have 2 francs and that isn't enough money to purchase any of the coal we need to complete our contracts. Click here to get 4 francs.1bank_466c10d203d87910
ScribalNow, let's get some grey coal so that we can fill both orders at one time. Unfortunately, it looks like the spot with a single grey coal has already been used. That's okay. There's no blocking in this game. Click on this spot to send 2 workers to get that grey coal. [tip] You can replace your workers or your opponents workers and it always costs 1 more worker than is on the spot you want to use.1factory_566c10e7c55d6d10
ScribalWe have enough money to purchase another black coal, but there aren't any available here. Click in this spot to draw 5 tiles.1factory_draw66c1153565ca510
ScribalGreat there's one here. This action works exactly like the action that allows us to draw 5 contracts. Click the black coal tile and then click the other tiles from right to left and click the button to put them back on the top of the deck. We might want to buy one of these later. Don't forget to click confirm.1tile-2166c11552e640b10tile-11 20 tile-16 19 tile-35 18 tile-39 17
ScribalIt's time to deliver our orders. Click the Carriage deliver action. When you click the deliver action spot, every contract with that icon will be delivered and you'll see that on our next turn.1delivery_266c1a985f203f10
ScribalCongratulations! We've scored our first 10 points and we are almost done with the tutorial.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66c1b021c829b00
ScribalBefore we move on to end of round and end of game scoring, there's one action spot we haven't seen used. You'll probably need to minimize this window to see it, but there is a small door underneath the locations to get francs. You can send 1 worker there at any time to get an 1 franc. You can see it in the image below. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ede25ef558.57072225.jpg[/img]1bank_666c256bc346cd00
ScribalWe have just completed end of round scoring for the 1st round. We got points for having delivered the most yellow, brown, and black coal. We also got points for delivering the most grey coal, but we were tied with our opponent so we both got the points. There are no points for 2nd place in a 2 player game. You need to have delivered coal in order to be considered for 2nd place.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66c349d66926d00
ScribalWe will score the majority for most delivered coal after every round. After round 2 and 3, we will also score for the most orders delivered by each method(ie. barrow or carriage). After round 3, we will also score for the most empty lorries of each color in our mine.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66c349d66926d00
ScribalFinally, we have end game scoring. Every 5 francs will score 1 point. Every 3 undelivered coal on your player board will score 1 point. For every undelivered contract, you will lose 1 point.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66c349d66926d00
ScribalRemember when I mentioned the lights on the coal tiles? At the end of the game, we want to have a balance of tiles between the light and dark sides. If they are not balanced, you will lose 2 points for every tile one side has in excess of the other. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ede27ea234.24206106.jpg[/img] In this picture, each side has 6 tiles, so I didn't lose any points.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66c349d66926d00
