Jellby*Welcome to the GORami tutorial!* GORami is an abstract strategy game for 2 players, with no luck involved (except in who plays first, I guess).1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
JellbyEach player has a set of *discs* (pieces, tokens) in their color, coming in three different numbers: *1*, *2*, *3*. We see our discs [blue]highlighted in blue[/blue] here at the bottom, and also in the sidebar on the right. Our opponent's pieces are [red]highlighted in red[/red] in the sidebar. Each player has 3 discs of each number. 2discpool000discpool 7 player_panel_38923250 7 player_panel_84730323 6
JellbyThere are different boards of different sizes, providing games of different length and depth. All boards have a similar triangle pattern. At the time of writing there are boards with 16, 22 and 24 *fields* (triangles). This is the smallest one, with 16 fields. With larger boards we would also have more discs of each number. (The fish is just for decoration.)3board000
JellbyAnd what is the goal? Well, at the end of the game, each *stripe* (line, row) is scored. The player with higher total disc value in the stripe gets one point. The player with most points wins.4sector_wrap_14000sector_wrap_3 1 sector_wrap_4 2 sector_wrap_5 2 sector_wrap_6 5 sector_wrap_7 5 sector_wrap_8 2 sector_wrap_10 1 sector_wrap_11 1 sector_wrap_14 1
JellbyA stripe is a row of fields going from one end of the board to the opposite end. I have highlighted one stripe in [red]*red*[/red], and another one in [blue]*blue*[/blue] (the fields with solid red-purple squares are in both stripes, sadly I cannot choose better colors/styles). There are also stripes running from top left to bottom right, and there are several stripes in each direction.5sector_wrap_14000sector_wrap_3 1 sector_wrap_4 2 sector_wrap_5 2 sector_wrap_6 5 sector_wrap_7 5 sector_wrap_8 2 sector_wrap_10 1 sector_wrap_11 1 sector_wrap_14 1
JellbyThere are just a couple of simple rules for placing discs. 1. They can only be placed in empty fields, one disc per field. 2. Two discs in adjacent fields (sharing an edge) cannot have the same number, regardless of their color.6sector_wrap_11000
JellbySo, if we want to put a disc in this [red]red field[/red], it cannot be the same number as any disc in the [blue]blue fields[/blue], if there is any. !!! It could happen that there is no legal placement in a field, if all three numbers are already present in its neighbors.7sector_wrap_11000sector_wrap_6 2 sector_wrap_10 2 sector_wrap_11 6 sector_wrap_12 2
JellbyIn addition, a *capture* is possible. When a player occupies the last empty field neighboring a disc of the other player, the surrounded disc changes color. !!! It doesn't matter what color the other surrounding discs have, and nothing happens if the surrounded disc belongs to the player that plays the last surrounding disc.8sector_wrap_11000
JellbySo we are ready to start. Our opponent played a *2* in a center field. We can now play on any empty field, but in the [red]red fields[/red] we can only play a *1* or a *3*.1sector_wrap_11624c9a992886100sector_wrap_5 1 sector_wrap_7 1 sector_wrap_11 1
JellbyLet's play a *3* below the *2*. Click first on the *3* disc and then on the empty field in the board. [tip] If this message is covering the disc and/or board, you can minimize it with the [-] button in its top right corner.2disc_3624c9a992886110sector_wrap_11 18 disc_3 17
JellbyI just played this *2*, fully surrounding the [blue]blue *3*[/blue], but since it is already blue (our color), nothing happens. If at some point a player cannot play, their turn is skipped. The game ends when neither player can play.1sector_10624c9af8abe9900sector_11 2
JellbyWe can now play here and capture our opponent's *3*. We could play a *1* or a *2*, let's play a *2*.1sector_wrap_1624c9b8aa5e9c10sector_wrap_1 1
JellbyWith this play, our opponent has ensured that their *2* and *3* [blue]highlighted in blue[/blue] cannot be captured, since there is no possible play in the [red]red field[/red].1sector_8624c9c0096c3600sector_6 2 sector_wrap_7 1 sector_wrap_8 2
Jellby!!! Note that there are now four yellow *2*s in the board, and our opponent has still one left, but there were only 3 at the beginning! That's OK, the discs have one color on each side and capturing just flips the disc, it doesn't "consume" a disc from the reserve.1sector_12624c9c5379b0800sector_1 1 sector_6 1 sector_10 1 sector_12 1 player_panel_84730323 1
JellbyThere's only one possible play now. Our opponent could do nothing because they don't have the required number anymore, and their turn is skipped. But we do. Just make the final move. The scoring will come after that. [tip] Small puzzle, you have to figure out what is the final move.1sector_wrap_13624c9c6c3db3510
JellbyEach stripe is marked with a fish of a color corresponding to the player with the higher total disc value, and therefore represents 1 point for the player. For example, this fish is 1 point for us, because in this stripe we have a total value of 4 and our opponent has 1.1fish_token_7624c9c70221a700sector_14 1 sector_15 1 sector_16 1 fish_token_7 6
JellbyWhereas this stripe is for our opponent, they have a total value of 5 against our 4. !!! If the total values in a stripe are tied, the stripe gives no point to either player.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment624c9c70221a700sector_3 1 sector_6 1 sector_wrap_7 1 sector_10 1 sector_11 1 sector_14 1 fish_token_9 6
JellbyThe final score is 8-2 (see the right sidebar), and we win. Congratulations! !!! In case of a tie, the player with the higher value in the center fields (those not touching, by edge or corner, the border of the board, highlighted in red) wins. If there's still a tie, it's a draw. You are now ready to play your own games and find the best strategy.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment624c9c70221a700sector_6 1 sector_11 1
