PillarAngel[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9dcad386.38248026.jpg[/img] Between the late 14th and early 15th century was a time when European nobility and warlords declined, and the arts and technology advanced in the wake of a new economic force: Merchants and *Bankers*. They became the *wealthiest private individuals ever* as they guided Europe into the *modern age*! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
PillarAngelBefore continuing, please click on this [blue]*cog wheel icon*[/blue], and make sure the game settings match the settings listed below. Adjust settings with [green]*[/green] so that your screen ends up looking something like this! PillarAngelIf the yellow square cards surrounding the map or the cards arranged in two rows below the map are too hard to see, with tool tips turned on, you can hover over any of them to see the card zoomed in, as well as a detailed overview of the card itself. If this BGA implementation has been translated into your preferred language, the tool tip will also fully translate the card!3pr_show_settings000
PillarAngelYou are a *Renaissance Banker* who will change Europe through various means such as by financing kings and republics, sponsoring voyages of discovery, joining secret cabals, and unleashing jihads and inquisitions! Your choices will determine if Europe is elevated into the bright modern era or remains festering in dark feudalism. [green]*Four paths to victory* determine the future course of Western Society: will it be towards imperialism, trade globalization, religious totalitarianism, or enlightened art and science?[/green]5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
PillarAngelWeeeeeeeell regardless of your preferred vision of Europe's future, in this game, the correct answer is *which ever one is the most convenient to get!* [green]The goal of the game is to be the first to achieve *one of the four victory conditions* shown on the left side of the screen.[/green] As soon as *any player* claims a victory condition, the game *immediately ends* and that player is declared the *winner*! We'll go over how to achieve each one once we know a little more about the game! [tip] You can hover over any of them to more easily read what each victory condition requires. 6pagemaintitletext000EmpireSquare_England_tokens 14 EmpireSquare_Portugal_tokens 14 pr_england 14 pr_portugal 14
PillarAngel[red]*Setup*[/red] --- Each player is randomly assigned *one of four Bankers* to play as. Each one is identified by their *color* (Blue, Green, Yellow, or Purple). In this game, you're *Purple*, and your opponent is *Yellow*! You can see this in the *player info panel* at the top right of the screen signified by the *Coat of Arms* (shield icon). [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9e51c426.25338939.jpg[/img] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9e7df3e8.63750659.jpg[/img]8pagemaintitletext000pr_florins_tableau_counter_85272455_counter 14 pr_florins_tableau_counter_95797621_counter 14 pr_florins_counter_85272455_icon 9 pr_florins_counter_95797621_icon 9
PillarAngelEach player has a supply of ten [blue]*Concessions* (pawns)[/blue] in their *player color*, and starts with one of them on the *map*. They are placed on the spot that matches your Banker's *Coat of Arms*. After the game starts, these starting spots serve *no gameplay function*. The number next to your *Concession color* in the [blue]*player info panel*[/blue] is how many Concessions you have on the *map*, and the number at the bottom of the list in [blue]*"Supply"*[/blue] is the number left in your *personal supply*. PillarAngel[red]*Player Turn*[/red] --- The game is played in *turns*. On your turn, you'll choose either *one* or *two* of the following *six actions* to perform: -Purchase a card -Play a card -Sell a card -Perform Tableau Ops -Start a Trade Fair -Declare Victory17archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
PillarAngel[red]*Action: Purchase a card*[/red] --- Here we have *two rows of five cards*, with an additional card on the far left flipped *face down*, and a *deck* to the far right for each row which represents two *Markets*: The *West Market (top)*, and the *East Market (bottom)*. 22PREN154X_EuropeanUnion-back000PREN154X_EuropeanUnion_tokens 9 pr_market_west_deck_container 14 PREN063_OttomanNavy_tokens 9 pr_market_east_deck_container 14
PillarAngelYou can purchase *any face up card* from *either Market*! To purchase a card, you must be able to place *one Florin* on *every card* to the *left* of the card you're purchasing. This includes the *face down card* so you'll *always* pay at least one Florin when purchasing a card. 23PREN154X_EuropeanUnion-back000
PillarAngelTry purchasing a card! 1. Click on *Purchase* at top of the screen. 2. Click *the first face up card* in the *West (top) *Market. 3. Click *Continue* in this tutorial box. (In a real game, you'll click Confirm at the top! The purchase action here is a little buggy in the tutorial!)24PREN154X_EuropeanUnion-back000PREN043_Gutenberg_tokens 16
PillarAngelBravo! When you purchase a card, it'll be added to your *hand*. You can view your hand by clicking this [blue]*card hand icon*[/blue] and hide it by clicking on the *X* icon it turns into when your hand is visible.1pr_floating_hand_button660b64187acbe00pr_floating_hand_button 7
PillarAngelTry purchasing another card! Try purchasing the *second face up card in the East Market*! As a short cut, you can simply click on a card you want to purchase, and the game will *automatically assume* that you want to purchase that card! (Again, click Continue in this box after performing the action here as well! Remember that you'll click on Confirm at the top in a real game!) [tip] Cards that you can afford will be *highlighted* with a *yellow border*. The face down cards are highlighted for a *different reason* so remember, despite being highlighted, that it is *not possible* to purchase face down cards!2PREN154X_EuropeanUnion-back660b64187acbe00PREN077_HurremSultanRoxelana_tokens 16
PillarAngelGood job! Your *hand limit* is only *two* cards. If you want to buy another card, you will have to get rid of at least one of your cards by spending an action to either *Play* or *Sell* a card. 1PREN154X_EuropeanUnion-back660b641bd562200
PillarAngel[red]*Action: Sell a card*[/red] --- You can sell *any card in your hand* for *two Florins*, regardless of how much you originally paid for it.2pr_victory_ageOfByzantine_slot660b641bd562200
PillarAngelYou are now out of actions, and your turn is over. Click *Confirm* at the top to end your turn and pass it to the next player!3undo_last_step_btn660b641bd562210page-title 16
PillarAngelWhen you end your turn, all cards in both Markets will *slide to the left* to fill in any gaps. *New cards will be drawn* from each Market's respective decks on the far right to fill in the remaining leftmost empty spaces.1PREN154X_EuropeanUnion-back660b641e0e80f00
PillarAngelThe *Yellow* player is now gonna take their turn, so let's sit back and wait until your turn comes back around!2pr_victory_ageOfByzantine_slot660b641e0e80f00
PillarAngelWhen a player takes a card with a Florin on it, they will keep that Florin, so that allowed the Yellow player to essentially take the first face up card for *free*! !!! You do not get the Florin until *after* you purchase the card, so you *cannot* use Florins on a card to help you purchase the card if you cannot afford it. !!! You cannot buy a card on the *same turn* you *placed Florins* on it. You'll have to wait until another turn comes around to buy that card, assuming someone didn't already buy it!1PREN154X_EuropeanUnion-back660b64345ebdf00
PillarAngelClicking [blue]*this icon*[/blue] allows you to see not only your hand, but your opponents hand as well! Keep in mind that the host of the game can enable an option to make player hands hidden.2pr_open_hands_button660b64345ebdf00pr_open_hands_button 7
PillarAngelLooks like the Yellow player *passed* their second action! Remember that you don't have to perform two actions on your turn if you don't want to, but you *must* perform at least one!3pagemaintitletext660b64345ebdf00
PillarAngelIt's your turn! Your hand is currently *full* and you're... Erm... Broke... So you cannot buy any more cards. Let's take a look at how to play cards!1pagemaintitletext660b6435a62a500
PillarAngel[red] *Action: Play a Card* [/red] --- Try playing a card! 1. Click on *Play* at the top of the screen. 2. Click on the *card hand icon* in the *bottom left of the screen* to reveal your hand if it's not already visible. 3. Click on the *rightmost card*. 4. Click *Confirm* at the top of the screen.2pr_floating_hand_button660b6435a62a510pr_floating_hand_button 18 PREN077_HurremSultanRoxelana_tokens 19
PillarAngelWay to go! When you play a card, it'll be placed either to the right or left of your player board. These sections are known as your *East Tableau* and *West Tableau* respectively. *East* cards will go to the *right* of your board, and *West* to the *left*. You can tell what kind of card it is by the card's *banner*. Black = East White = West [tip] When taking a *Sell action*, in addition to cards in your hand, you can also choose to sell a card from either of your Tableaus!1pagemaintitletext660b643ad2f4000
PillarAngel[red]*One-shots*[/red] --- If the bottom of a card you play has a parchment with a bomb in its top left corner, that indicates that this card has an action on it called a [blue]*One-shot*[/blue]. When you play a card with a One-shot, you must decide if you want to perform it. The text on the parchment indicates which One-shot you can perform. For this card, it's a *Coronation* One-shot. You can only trigger a card's One-shot when it's *first played into your Tableau*. If you chose not to trigger it, you will *not get the option to do so again!* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9f0bb6a4.10431351.jpg[/img]2pagemaintitletext660b643ad2f4000
PillarAngelSince we're given the option now, let's learn about how the *Coronation* One-shot works! *Click "Yes" to perform the card's One-shot!*3occurs_button660b643ad2f4010occurs_button 6
PillarAngelAlrighty! Your first One-shot action is a go! Before what the One-shot does can be fully understood however, we'll need to pivot a bit and talk about what the *yellow square cards* surrounding the map are, so please direct your attention to what is pictured below! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9fc79086.18142931.jpg[/img]1undo_last_step_btn660b643d520e900
PillarAngel[red]*Empire Cards*[/red] --- [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda0e8bec6.30611339.jpg[/img] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda125fed6.35747044.jpg[/img] The map is split into [green]*ten locations*[/green]. Each one has its own [blue]*Empire card*[/blue] that players will be trying to get into their Tableaus to help them achieve *victory conditions* and gain some nice bonuses that we'll see later! When an Empire card is next to its corresponding location, it is considered to be *on the throne*. Empire cards have two sides, a *King (or Kingdom) side* (left), and a *Republic side* (right), and they always start the game on their *King side*.3undo_last_step_btn660b643d520e900
PillarAngel[red]*One-shot: Coronation*[/red] --- The easiest way to get an Empire card into your Tableau is with a *Coronation One-shot*! This One-shot is *only found on Queen cards* and allows you to choose a King for them to marry. Of course, Queens have standards and wont just marry 𝘒𝘯𝘺𝘣𝘰π˜₯𝘺! They will only marry Kings that rule over the locations listed under [blue]*Suitors*[/blue] at the *bottom of the Queen card's banner*. In addition to that, the Empire card must be located either on their *throne* or in one of *your Tableaus*. It cannot be located in *another player's Tableau*. So in this instance, you can only take the Empire card from either *Byzantium*, *Ottoman*, or *Mamluk*! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda1e79893.84351859.jpg[/img]4customActions660b643d520e900EmpireSquare_Byzantium_tokens 11 EmpireSquare_Ottoman_tokens 11 EmpireSquare_Mamluk_tokens 11

PillarAngelWell done! You now have your first *Empire card* in your Tableau! [tip] The *Coat of Arms* of the player who currently has the Empire card in their Tableau will show in the top left corner of its *throne* as a way of telling who currently has which Empire card. PillarAngelBefore continuing with the rest of your turn, we're gonna pivot again to talk about stuff mostly relating to acquiring Empire cards and also some additional info about Queen cards.2EmpireSquare_Ottoman-front660b644b4b79f00
PillarAngel[red]*Regime Change*[/red] --- Coronation One-Shots and *many other actions* will cause a *Regime Change* in the location that the action was triggered in (in this case, *Ottoman*). Different things will happen depending on what action triggered the Regime Change, but the following three things will *always* happen: 1. The location's Empire card will be placed into your East or West Tableau on its *King side*. (You just did this!) 2. You will get the option to place one of your *Concessions* on one of the location's *borders*. (You are currently at this step!) 3. You will get the option to *emancipate repressed tokens*. (We'll learn about this later!) [tip] *"Tokens"* refer to *Concessions*, as well as the *yellow*, *green*, and *red pieces*. From top to bottom in the *Supply* section, these are *Bishops*, *Knights*,* Rooks*, and *Pirates*. We'll learn about the tokens we haven't looked at yet later!3pass_btn660b644b4b79f00
PillarAngel[red]*Royal Couple*[/red] --- Causing a *Regime Change* with a Coronation One-Shot creates a *Royal Couple* where the Queen card will be placed *underneath* the Empire card. When selling an Empire card *on its own*, you'll get two Florins and instead of being discarded, it'll return to the *throne*. However, if you're trying to sell the Empire or Queen card that is a part of a Royal Couple, they *must go together to the throne*, but since you are technically selling two cards with one action, you will get *four Florins* instead of just two! !!! Kings that are apart of a Royal Couple *cannot* be the target of a Coronation One-shot. They stay loyal!4EmpireSquare_Ottoman_tokens660b644b4b79f00
PillarAngel[red]*Age of Feudalism (Imperial Victory)*[/red] --- [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda23d40d4.76295987.jpg[/img] Empire cards on their *King side* are needed to achieve an [blue]*Imperial Victory*[/blue]. In order to do so, you need to have at least *two more* King-sided Empire cards in your Tableau than any other player. In a *two player game* you need to have *three more* than your opponent. For example, in a *three player game* where your opponents each have one Empire card, you need to have *three* Empire cards to claim an imperial victory.5pass_btn660b644b4b79f00pr_portugal 14
PillarAngel[red]*Prestige*[/red] --- [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda3c327d2.69111528.jpg[/img] The other three victory conditions that we'll see later will require you to have a certain amount of *Prestige* of a specific type. Prestige is gained by simply having cards in your Tableau. Each Prestige icon on a card counts as one Prestige of that type. Losing the card in some way, like selling it, will also *lose you the Prestige* that the card provided. There are *six* kinds of Prestige. From left to right, they are: [red]*Law*[/red] Represents a constitution that recognizes the rules of nature, rather than humans, as its authority. Required for a *Renaissance Victory*. [red]*Discovery*[/red] Represents the doctrine of maritime exploration and imperialism. Required for a *Globalization Victory*. [red]*Catholic*[/red] A religion that recognizes the Pope as the centralized authority. Required for a *Holy Victory*. [red]*Islamic*[/red] A religion that uses the Koran as its authority. Required for a *Holy Victory*. [red]*Reformist*[/red] A religion that uses the Bible/Tanakh, rather than the Pope, as its authority. Required for a *Holy Victory*. [red]*Patron*[/red] Represents a financial sponsor of the artistic Renaissance. Used as a *tie breaker (Patron Victory)* if the game ends in a draw. More info on this later.6pass_btn660b644b4b79f00EmpireSquare_England_tokens 14 EmpireSquare_Portugal_tokens 14 pr_england 14 pr_prestige_catholic_counter_85272455_icon 2 pr_prestige_islamic_counter_85272455_icon 2 pr_prestige_reformist_counter_85272455_icon 2 pr_prestige_patron_counter_85272455_icon 2 pr_prestige_law_counter_85272455_icon 2 pr_prestige_discovery_counter_85272455_icon 2

PillarAngel[red]*Old-Maids*[/red] --- If you play a *Queen card* without performing its *Coronation One-shot*, the card will be slotted under your *player board*. These cards are *Old-Maids*, and they are *not* considered to be a part of your Tableau for *any purpose*. Any *Prestige* they provide still counts, and they can be sold for two Florins using the *Sell* action.8EmpireSquare_Ottoman-front660b644b4b79f00
PillarAngelAlright that's enough pivoting for now, let's get back to the game! We left off during the *Regime Change* in *Ottoman*. You did the first step, which is to place the location's Empire card in your Tableau, now let's look at the second step, which is the option to place one of your *Concessions* onto the map!9pr_papalStates660b644b4b79f00
PillarAngelNo matter what action gave you the ability to place a Concession, they are *always* placed along a location's *border*. A border is any *gap* between *two locations*, and it can either be a *sea border* or a *land border*. If a *black or white line crosses a border* it is a sea border, and if *no lines cross it*, it's a land border. So as an example, *all three of Ottoman's borders* are considered *sea borders*!10pr_papalStates660b644b4b79f00
PillarAngelThe *small yellow squares* show where you can place your Concession. You are also able to place it on a border *occupied by another Concession*, but that requires Florins to do, and generally you wouldn't want to do that if a border is occupied by your own Concession, so we'll see how this works later!11pr_papalStates660b644b4b79f00
PillarAngelTry placing a Concession! Click *this yellow square* to choose this spot to place it, then click *Continue* in this box. In a real game, you'll click confirm at the top!12pr_papalStates660b644b4b79f00pr_border_hungary_ottoman 16
PillarAngelGood job! The *Regime Change* process is completed and you are back to choosing an action to take. The third step, *emancipating repressed tokens*, is automatically skipped cause it's not possible to do that in this location right now. Again, we'll look at how that works later!1pr_papalStates660b6450674f000
PillarAngelLet's get the other card in your hand into your Tableau! 1. Click the *hand icon* to reveal your hand, if it's not already revealed already. 2. Click on the card. 3. Click *Confirm* at the top of the screen.2VictoryImperial-back660b6450674f010pr_floating_hand_button 17 PREN043_Gutenberg_tokens 18
PillarAngelNice! Notice how it has a *white banner*. As mentioned, this means that it's a *West Card*. Therefore, it was placed in your *West Tableau* on the *left side* of your player board.1PREN043_Gutenberg-front660b645ec64b100
PillarAngel*[red]Abilities[/red]* --- [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda42ca0b2.52484747.jpg[/img] Some cards have *abilities* which are found at the *bottom of its black or white banner*. The card you just played has an ability which states that your hand size is *unlimited*, which can definitely come in handy! [tip] If the description of the ability has *red text* it means that the ability affects *all players*! !!! Abilities only work when the card that provides it is *in your Tableau*. When you lose the card, you *lose the ability*, and changes are made to ensure the game's rules are followed before the ability was active. So if you somehow lost this card, you will then have to discard cards down to the normal hand limit of two cards *immediately*!2pr_lyon660b645ec64b100
PillarAngel*[red]Agents[/red]* --- [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda44da4d2.28903718.jpg[/img] Most cards will depict one or two *tokens* at the bottom of the card. This will give you the option to place the depicted token or tokens onto the *map* when you play the card into your Tableau. The term *Agent* is simply used to refer to tokens that come from a card. After it's placed, you do not keep track of which tokens are Agents and which are not; the Agent title for that token or tokens is disregarded when it's placed onto the map. [tip] Tokens are *limited*, and how much is left of each type is shown under *Supply*. If a player performs an action that allows them to place a token of a certain type and there is *no more* of that type left in the supply, that player takes any *repressed* token already in play, and places that (we'll learn about what repressed means later). If none exist, then that player takes *any* token of that type in play.3pr_lyon660b645ec64b100
PillarAngelLike *One-shots*, your only opportunity to place Agents is when you play the card that has them into your Tableau. If you choose not to place them, *you will not get the opportunity to place the Agents from that card again!*4PREN043_Gutenberg-front660b645ec64b100
PillarAngelAdditionally, many cards will depict Agents *and* a One-shot on them. If you choose to perform a card's One-shot, and it has Agents on it, you *must* place them after you fully complete the One-shot! However, if the location is *saturated*, meaning that there are *no valid empty spots for the token to be placed*, then token placement becomes optional. We'll learn how tokens can be placed in already occupied spots later! If you choose not to perform the One-shot, or the card doesn't have one like in this case, then Agent placement is optional. If the card depicts two Agents, then you may choose to place either both or just one of them (assuming it's optional). [tip] There are some One-shots that start *battles* which handle the mandatory placement of Agents a little differently than the ones that don't, which we'll look at later.5PREN043_Gutenberg-front660b645ec64b100

PillarAngelWell isn't [blue]*this card*[/blue] strikingly different from the rest! PillarAngelOkay! It's your turn once again! Right now you have no Florins and cannot purchase more cards from the Market as a result. Let's look at one of the ways you can earn some!6pagemaintitletext660b64e0a729d00
PillarAngel*[red]Trade Fairs[/red]* --- Another action you can do on your turn is *start a Trade Fair*! A Trade Fair distributes the Florins on the *face down cards in the Market* by sending a *Trade Ship* along either the *East* or *West Trade Route* and give those Florins to Concessions belonging to *any player* along that trade route. As we can see, you can *choose* which Trade Route the ship will follow.7pr_china660b64e0a729d00trade_fair_west_btn 1 trade_fair_east_btn 1
PillarAngelWhen starting a Trade Fair, the Florins on the [blue]*face down card*[/blue] from the East Market (if it's an East Trade Fair) or the West Market (if it's a West Trade Fair) are taken and combined with two Florins from *China* (one Florin in a two player game). Together, these Florins represent the *Profits* from the Trade Fair. [tip] *China* refers to the general supply of Florins not controlled by any player, also known as the bank, but since we're also called a bank, we cannot call it that or it'll be confusing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Thematically, it represents the foreign market.8PREN154X_EuropeanUnion-back660b64e0a729d00pr_china 12 PREN024_Gonfalonier_tokens 14 PREN122X_TheLastSigh_tokens 14
PillarAngel[red]*Emporiums*[/red] --- The East and West Trade Routes each have *three locations* they can start in. These locations are *City spaces with a nine-pointed star surrounding it*. These locations are called *Emporiums*. *East Emporiums* -Tana in Byzantium -Novgorod in Holy Roman Empire -Timbuktu in Aragon *West Emporiums* -Trebizond in Byzantium -Red Sea in Mamluk -Spice Islands in Portugal *Only one of the three Emporiums* for each route can be active. The two that are inactive will have either a black or white circle on the space. This is called a *Busted Disk*, and inactive Emporiums are referred to as *Busted Emporiums*. At the start of the game, the *active East Emporium* is *Tana* and the *active West Emporium* is *Trebizond*, both of which are located in *Byzantium*. [tip] Emporiums can have tokens on them, as is the case for the start of the East Trade Route, but Busted Emporiums can *never* have a token on them!9pr_china660b64e0a729d00disk_black_2 1 knight_islamic_5 3 pr_trebizond 3 disk_white_1 1 pr_timbuktu 1 pr_redSea 1
PillarAngel[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda49ec846.51599887.jpg[/img] You'll get one Florin *from the Profits* for starting the Trade Fair, then an [blue]*imaginary Trade Ship*[/blue] sails along the *selected Trade Route*. Every time the [blue]*Trade Ship*[/blue] passes a Concession along the route, the player who owns that Concession *takes one [red]Florin[/red] from the Profits*. If the Profits ever run out, the Trade Fair *immediately ends*. This is why placing Concessions along *sea borders* is so beneficial since it places them somewhere along one of the Trade Routes. It is also very advantageous to try to place Concessions *as close to the start of a Trade route as possible* so your Concessions can get first dibs on the profits during a Trade Fair!10pr_china660b64e0a729d00
PillarAngelSo looking at the state of the map now and the Florins on the face down cards in both Markets, which Trade Route do you think you should take to *maximize the amount of Florins you'll get*?11pr_china660b64e0a729d00
PillarAngel[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda50dc031.80624385.jpg[/img] Let's see what would happen if you start a *West Trade Fair*! The *face down card* in the *West Market* currently has *one Florin* on it. In a two player game, *China* would add one Florin to it, making the *Profits* for this Trade Fair a total of *two Florins*. (Reminder that in a three or four player game, China would add two Florins to the Profits.) First, you'd *immediately get one Florin* from the Profits for *starting the Trade Fair*, leaving just *one Florin left*. Then the [blue]*Trade Ship*[/blue] sails along the [green]*West Trade Route*[/green]. It would *pass your Concession first* and you'd get the *last remaining Florin* from the Profits. Since there are no Florins left in the Profits at this point, the Trade Fair *immediately ends* and your opponent gets no Florins. So the end result would be you getting *two Florins* and your opponent would get *nothing*. That's pretty good! However, could the result be better? 12pr_china660b64e0a729d00pr_trebizond 3 pawn_coeur_10 1 PREN024_Gonfalonier_tokens 14
PillarAngel[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda54c0988.63373236.jpg[/img] Let's see what would happen if you start a *East Trade Fair*! The *face down card* in the *East Market* has *three Florins* on it. In a two player game, *one Florin* is added to it, making the Profits a total of *four Florins*. You'd immediately get one Florin for starting the trade fair. Then the [blue]*Trade Ship*[/blue] sails along the *[green]East Trade Route[/green]*. It passes *two of your Concessions* and *none belonging to your opponent*. The end result would be you earning a total of *three Florins* and *none* going to your opponent, leaving one remaining in the Profits which will be added to the *next type of Trade Fair that just ended* (in this case, the next *East Trade Fair*).13pr_china660b64e0a729d00knight_islamic_5 3 pawn_coeur_10 1 pawn_coeur_4 1
PillarAngelSo in both Trade Fairs, you were able to *deny* your opponent from earning any Florins, but doing an East Trade Fair would net you one additional Florin! So to get as much Florins as you can, let's start an East Trade Fair! Click on *Trade Fair East* at the top of the screen, then click *Confirm* to start an East Trade Fair!14pr_china660b64e0a729d10
PillarAngel[red]*Levies*[/red] --- In the location the [blue]*imaginary Trade Ship*[/blue] starts in, and in *every location it passes through*, the player who started the Trade Fair *must* place one *token* in an *empty City space* in that location if it has one. The token placed *must match the token type and color* that is depicted on the spot you want to place it in. When a token is placed like this, it is referred to as a *Levy*, but, just like Agents, the term becomes irrelevant after the token is placed onto the map. [tip] Thematically, this represents the trade ship getting taxed at the Empire's borders, with the taxes immediately being used to raise armies, however this does not take anything from the profits.1pr_china660b64f37ea2a00
PillarAngelLet's practice placing some Levies! Click *here*, then click *Confirm* at the top to place a *Red Rook*!2pr_tokens_theocracies_counter_catholic660b64f37ea2a10pr_trebizond 16
PillarAngelNicely done! A *Red Knight* was automatically placed in *Hungary* because it only had *one spot* where you could place a Levy. In Ottoman however, you are given another choice! Try placing a *Yellow Rook* this time! (For some reason this placement is bugged, so just click *Continue* in this box after clicking the indicated spot!)1pr_tokens_theocracies_counter_catholic660b64fc89e1800pr_rhodes 16
PillarAngelWay to go! Just like with Hungary, *Mamluk* only had *one spot* to place a Levy, so a token was placed for you. [tip] Since placed tokens can impact the game state and affect other actions you or the other players may want to take, it's best to take into consideration the Levies that'll be placed when starting a Trade Fair. Their effects will become more apparent the more games you play, so focusing on maximizing your profits is a good enough baseline to get you started when it comes to Trade Fairs!1pr_tokens_theocracies_counter_catholic660b65066af3000
PillarAngelWith that however, the Trade Fair ends, and you are back to choosing actions! The *face down card* that the Florins were taken from for the Profits (in this case, the one from the *East Market*) is *discarded* which will leave a *gap* at the end of the corresponding Market. When the *Market refreshes* at the *end of your turn*, all cards will *slide down* to fill this gap. When a card enters this gap, it'll be *flipped face down* making that card *unavailable to purchase*! The *remaining Profits* from the Trade Fair, if any, will be placed onto this new face down card. If there is no card in the leftmost spot of a Market, it'll say *"Trade Fair"* to indicated this, and *you will not be able to start another Trade Fair of that type*. Meaning that you can start, at most, *only one* East Trade Fair and *one* West Trade Fair per turn. PillarAngel[red]*Ruling Class (Knights and Rooks)*[/red] --- [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda5bd2409.79200257.jpg[/img] *Knights (top)* represent *military cavalry*, while *Rooks (bottom)* represents *nobles in their castles*. These pieces play an *offensive and defensive role* respectively when it comes to *battles*, which we'll look at soon. The short hand for referring to both of these tokens is *Ruling Class tokens*. They are *only placed on City spaces inside an Empire location and never on its borders*. As we saw from the Trade Fair, when placed as a *Levy* the token placed *must match the type and color* depicted on the City space the token is being placed on. When placed as *Agents*, the tokens from the card they come from can be placed on *any City space* within a location, ignoring the depicted token's type and color on the chosen City space.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment660b65066af3000
PillarAngel[red]*Pirates*[/red] --- [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda5eae934.55158317.jpg[/img] These tokens can only be placed on *sea borders*. During a Trade Fair, if the [blue]*Trade Ship*[/blue] passes through a *Pirate* along the Trade Route, *China* takes *one Florin* from the *Profits*, denying potential Florin gains to *all players*!5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment660b65066af3000
PillarAngel[red]*Bishops*[/red] --- [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda635d727.97280051.jpg[/img] These tokens represent *Inquisitors*, holy representatives travelling around Europe enforcing- I mean uhh, sharing their religious beliefs and customs. PillarAngel[red]*Token Ownership*[/red] --- It is *very important* to understand that tokens *do not "belong" to any player*. Tokens can be moved, removed, or manipulated in any way by *anyone*, regardless of who originally placed them. The only tokens players have ownership over are the *Concessions matching their player color*, and even then there is an action that allows you to use Concessions belonging to other players!8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment660b65066af3000

PillarAngel[red]*One-shot: Trade Shift*[/red] --- Uh oh, your opponent has used a One-shot that allows them to move the *Busted Disk* from the City *indicated on the One-shot parchment on the card* on top of the *active Emporium*! From now on, *West Trade Fairs* will start from *Red Sea*, which has cut off one of your Concessions from receiving *any Florins* from the *Profits*! Oh no! If a token occupies the spot that the Busted Disk will be placed on, that token becomes [red]*repressed*[/red]. [tip] The *Spice Islands Trade Shift One-shot* requires you to have at least *one Discovery Prestige* to thematically simulate the challenges of circumnavigating Africa. PillarAngel[red]*Repressed Tokens*[/red] --- [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda6b545e0.24410631.jpg[/img] Certain actions will cause tokens to be *repressed*, causing that token to be placed onto the *Empire card belonging to the location that token was repressed in*. *Pirates* and *Bishops* can *never be repressed*. [tip] Repressed tokens *always* go with the Empire card, no matter where it moves to. [tip] Having an Empire card with repressed tokens in your Tableau does not give you any special benefits over them. They will function the same as if it was in another Tableau or on the throne. [tip] There is an option in the *game settings* in the *Gameplay tab* called *"Repress tokens to thrones"* that shows repressed units *on the throne* instead of on the Empire card to keep better track of them, but please leave that setting *off* until the tutorial is finished since it'll help with explaining a game mechanic that we'll see later. [tip] Thematically, repressed *Ruling Class* represents *disenfranchised nobility* and *guildsmen*, while repressed *Concessions* represents *merchants* being placed into *serfdom (slavery)*.2pagemaintitletext660b652ce5af500rook_reformist_4 1
PillarAngelOh jeez, the repression continues! When placing a token as an *Agent*, you can pay *one Florin* to *China* to place a token in a spot *already occupied by another token*. [tip] *"Kill"* means the same as *discard*, but implies *violence*. If a Ruling Class token, Pirate, or Bishop is killed/discarded, it is placed into the *general supply*. If it was a Concession, it is placed into the corresponding player's supply. If it's a card, it's *removed from the game*, unless it's an *Empire card*, which always gets sent back to their throne on their *King side*.1pagemaintitletext660b6540dec2600pawn_coeur_4 1 pawn_medici_1 1

PillarAngel[red]*Battles*[/red] --- There are *different kinds of battles* that can happen in this game, but they are all resolved the *same way*. First, you identify the *Attackers* and *Defenders* in battle (how they are identified depends on the kind of battle being resolved), then you'll pick an attacker to fight against a defender, causing them both to be *killed*. Repeat until there are either no Attackers or no Defenders left in the battle. If there is at least *one attacker* left, the battle is considered *victorious* and you'll cause a *Regime Change* where the battle was fought. If you run out of Attackers, even if the Defenders end up being wiped out at the same time, the battle will not be victorious, and no Regime Change will occur. [tip] Battles are *deterministic*. You will only win or lose a battle if you want to. There are strategic benefits to starting battles that *wont* be victorious. [tip] If you still have Attackers, and there are still Defenders in the battle that they could attack, then you *must use them to attack*, but you can choose who attacks in any order, allowing you to choose your casualties.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment660b665152bc000
PillarAngel[red]*Tableau Op: Campaign*[/red] --- Campaigns are a special kind of action that starts battles (they're also the only Op that can start a battle, with the rest of the battle starting actions found on *One-shots*). This Op allows you to battle against a location *adjacent* to the location *depicted on the Empire card* that the Campaign Op is being performed from. A location is adjacent if it *shares a border* or is *diagonally across* from that location. !!! You are *not allowed* target a location with a Campaign Op if it's *Empire card* is in *your Tableau*. PillarAngelAdditionally, when performing a Campaign Op, you must pay one Florin *per attacker*, so since you have two *Knights* in the *attacking Empire (Ottoman)*, you'll have to pay *two Florins* after resolving the Op. Luckily you got a couple to spare!5pr_ottoman660b665152bc000
PillarAngelSo since we know the *Attackers* are all *Knights* in the *attacking Empire*, and the Defenders are all *Ruling Class tokens* in the Empire *you end up selecting*, can you see which battles will end up *victorious* and which ones *wont*? 6pr_ottoman660b665152bc000
PillarAngelLet's take a look and find out! The *Attacking Empire (Ottoman)* has *two Attackers*. *Hungary* and *Mamluk* each have *two Defenders*. If you start a battle in either of these Empires, you would wipe out all of the Defenders, but have no Attackers left after, so *neither battle* would be victorious.7pr_ottoman660b665152bc000knight_catholic_6 1 knight_reformist_5 1 knight_islamic_7 3 knight_islamic_2 3 rook_catholic_6 1 rook_islamic_2 1

PillarAngelNicely done! The battle was *victorious* and you triggered a *Regime Change*! Let's review the three things that *always happen* when a Regime change occurs: 1. The *Empire card* depicting the location where the Regime Change occurred will be placed into your Tableau on its *King Side*. If that Empire card is located in another player's Tableau, it is *taken from them*! 2. You'll get to place a Concession on one of the *borders* on the Empire card's location. 3. You'll get the option to *emancipate repressed tokens*. This allows you to move repressed tokens on the *taken Empire card* into *valid empty spots* in the Empire card's location. If the location is *saturated* for them, then they *cannot* be emancipated; it's not possible to pay to repress tokens already on the map to make room for the already repressed tokens.1pagemaintitletext660b666e371b000
PillarAngel[red]*Vassals*[/red] --- When a location goes through a Regime Change as the result of a victorious campaign, the attacking Empire card claims the defending Empire card. The claimed card becomes a *Vassal*, and is placed underneath the Empire card that claimed it. The Empire card that owns the Vassal is called its *Suzerain*. PillarAngel[red]*Rules Regarding Vassals*[/red] --- -Repressed tokens go with the Empire card becoming a Vassal. -A Suzerain can have *any number* of Vassals. The BGA implementation may move things around to make sure everything fits according to the game's settings, but Vassals are always considered to be underneath their Suzerain. -Suzerains and Vassals are considered *separate cards* when performing the *Tableau Ops East/West* action. -Vassals can still be targeted by *One-Shots* and *Ops* except for the *Vote Op*. (We'll learn about this Op later!) -A Vassal can still campaign. If victorious, the losing Empire becomes a Vassal to the winning Empire's *Suzerain*. -If a Suzerain suffers a *Regime Change* or is somehow discarded, all of its Vassals are *liberated* and returned to their *thrones*. -Selling a Suzerain will only give you *two Florins*. Unlike a Royal Couple, you will *not* get two Florins per Vassal the Suzerain had. The Vassals will be *liberated* instead.3pagemaintitletext660b666e371b000

PillarAngel[red]*Battles from One-shots*[/red] --- These kinds of battles can be broken into *two categories*: *Civil Wars*, and *Religious Wars*. Unlike Campaigns, they are fought in a *single location*, the target of which is the location depicted on the card that the One-shot came from. There are two *Civil War One-shots* and three *Religious War One-shots*. The only difference between them is that the *religion of the attacking and defending tokens* matters in *Religious Wars*, and doesn't matter at all in *Civil Wars*. *Agents* and *repressed tokens* can be classified as *Attackers* in these battles, and if they are still around when all Defenders have been defeated, they are considered *survivors*. After a battle has been resolved, and *before* resolving the effects of a *Regime Change (take Empire card, place Concession, emancipate)*, you *must* place survivors in the location the battle was fought in. If the location is *saturated* for a survivor Agent, then it is automatically *repressed* at no cost. If the survivor was already repressed, they *remain repressed*.3occurs_button660b67602bbc900

PillarAngel[red]*One-shot: Crusades, Jihads, and Reformations*[/red] --- Look out! Your opponent is about to start a *Religious War*! 😧 All three of the above listed One-shots are *Religious Wars*. They all resolve *exactly the same way*, except the *Attackers* and *Defenders* are identified as *Believers* and *Heretics*. Who the believers are depends on the type of Religious War being performed, and the Heretics are simply *any token that isn't a believer*. *Crusades*: Catholic believers *Jihads*: Islamic believers *Reformations*: Reformist believers1pr_china660b6797e821d00
PillarAngel[green]*Attackers*[/green] -All *Agents* on the card *performing the One-shot* -All *Pirate believers* bordering the location -All *Ruling Class believers* in the location -All *Knight believers* in *ADJACENT* locations --- [blue]*Defenders*[/blue] -All *Ruling Class Heretics* in the location -All *Pirate Heretics* bordering the location *The Bloody Rule*: The location the battle takes place in *must* have at least *one Defender*; You *cannot* start any Religious War in a location with no tokens to classify as Defenders. [tip] The card performing the One-shot (Quizilbāsh) depicts a *Bishop* as the *Agent*. Bishops do not participate in *any* kind of battle, even if they are an Agent. However, they *must* be placed after the One-shot is fully resolved. [tip] Concession Agents *do not* participate in *Religious Wars* due to them not being sword wielding saints, and must be placed after the battle is fully resolved. [tip] The location on the card performing the *Jihad One-shot* depicts the symbol for *East*, meaning the target location can be *any of the four East Empire locations*! [tip] No repressed tokens participate in the battle as Attackers or Defenders in any Religious War. PillarAngelLet's go through them one by one and see! *Hungary*: Two Attackers (one from Byzantium, and one from Ottoman), two Defenders *Result*: Not victorious (All Attackers and Defenders would be eliminated) *Byzantium*: Two Attackers (one in Byzantium, one in Ottoman), zero Defenders *Result*: No battle (The *Bloody Rule* forbids it) *Ottoman*: Three Attackers (two in Ottoman, one in Byzantium), one defender *Result*: Victorious! *Mamluk*: Three Attackers (one in Mamluk, one in Ottoman, and one in Byzantium), one defender *Result*: Victorious! PillarAngelWell that sucked, let's go over the damage your opponent has done since it went by fast: -Due to the Regime Change happening in *Ottoman*, its Empire card got scooped out of your Tableau and went straight into your opponent's. -The Vassal was *liberated* due the *Regime Change*. Happens whenever a Suzerain leaves a player's Tableau for *any reason*. -Due to how violent the overthrow of the monarchy is during a *Regime Change* when the Empire card is being sent to *another player*, the Queen was *killed*. I'll miss her dearly. πŸ˜” -A victorious *Religious War* changes the location's *Theocracy* to match that of the Religion the war is associated with. In this case, *Ottoman* has now adopted an *Islamic Theocracy* which is shown by the Islamic crescent depicted on the location. Theocracies are needed for a *Holy victory*, which will be explained later. [tip] At the beginning of the game, *Papal States* and *Mamluk* both respectively start out with a *Catholic* and *Islamic* Theocracy already adopted.1pagemaintitletext660b6821cc73100

When placed as an *Agent*, they *must* be placed on either the card it came from, or on *any card* that *matches the location depicted on the card it came from*. They can *never be repressed* and should not be considered as such if placed onto an Empire card. PillarAngel[red]*Pacification*[/red] --- If a Bishop is placed onto an *Empire card* with *Repressed tokens on it*, the player that placed it there may optionally *kill* one repressed token on that card. PillarAngel[red]*Tableau Ops: Siege*[/red] --- [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda9496b71.87145813.jpg[/img] This Op allows you to *kill* one *Ruling Class* or *Pirate* belonging to *any religion* in the location *depicted on the card Performing the Op*. This *does not* start a battle, and *does not* cost anything.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment660b7602a192600
PillarAngel[red]*Tableau Ops: Behead*[/red] --- [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda97b9643.70354060.jpg[/img] Choose one card to *kill* in any *player's Tableau*, including your own, that *depicts the same location as the card performing the Op*. [tip] As hilarious as it would be, a card cannot behead *itself*. [tip] If the target is an *Empire card (King or Republic)*, the card *returns to the throne*, and the card that did the beheading *is also killed*. Huge price to pay for messing with the law! [tip] Targeting an Empire card that is married to a Queen results in the Empire card, the Queen, and the card that did the beheading being killed. However, if you target the Queen, *only the Queen is killed*. Yikes.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment660b7602a192600
PillarAngel[red]*Tableau Op: Tax*[/red] --- [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda9a28130.01796464.jpg[/img] Choose one *Concession* (even your own) bordering the location *depicted on the card performing the Op*. The player who *owns that Concession* must make a *choice*: 1. Pay one Florin to *China*. If they cannot or choose not to pay, they *must* choose option two. 2. *Repress* the chosen *Concession*. Regardless of the choice, the *target of the Tax Op* now places one *Ruling Class token* in a City of their choice in the location *as a Levy*. !!! To perform the Tax Op, the location of the bordering Concession *cannot be saturated*. There must be at least *one empty spot* available to place a Levy.8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment660b7602a192600
PillarAngel[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785eda9c98146.80087503.jpg[/img] You now know how every *One-shot* and *Tableau Op* in the game works! However, it can be quite a lot to remember how all of them work! Luckily this game has you covered!9archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment660b7602a192600
PillarAngelClicking [blue]*this "i" symbol*[/blue] will open up *player aids* with *four tabs* that details: -*How battles resolve* (Attackers, Defenders, Rewards etc.) -*Description of all One-Shots* -*Description of all Ops* -*List of all locations* (including how the *Cities change* depending on if it's a *Medieval state* or if it *adopted a Theocracy*) 10pr_information_button660b7602a192600pr_information_button 7
PillarAngelAlso taking the opportunity to remind you about the [blue]*game settings*[/blue] so you can adjust the game interface to your taste! (I strongly recommend turning on *repress tokens to thrones* once you get more comfortable with the game!)11pr_show_settings660b7602a192600pr_show_settings 7
PillarAngelYou've come a long way! Now it's time to finally discuss the *game end* and *winning the game*!12archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment660b7602a192600
PillarAngel[red]*Ties (Patron Victory)*[/red] --- [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edaa632e32.86079504.jpg[/img] If the *two Market decks* run out of cards, and either Market *cannot* be fully filled with new cards when it refreshes at the end of a player's turn, *the game ends in a tie*. The tie is broken by the player with the most *Patron Prestige*. If the players are *still tied*, then the player with the most *Florins* wins. If the players are *STILL tied*, the tied players *share the victory*!13archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment660b7602a192600
PillarAngelLuckily, *you currently meet the requirements of one of the victory condtions*! Can you see which one it is?14pr_tokens_theocracies_counter_catholic660b7602a192600
PillarAngelIt's the conditions for a *Renaissance Victory*! You currently have *more Republics than your opponent* and *at least two more Law Prestige* than your opponent!15EmpireSquare_England-front660b7602a192600EmpireSquare_England_tokens 14 pr_prestige_law_counter_85272455_icon 2 pr_republics_counter_85272455_icon 2 pr_prestige_law_counter_95797621_icon 2 pr_republics_counter_95797621_icon 2
PillarAngel[red]*Action: Declare Victory*[/red] --- In order to win, you must spend *one action* to *Declare Victory*, and after that it's as simple as choosing the victory condition you want to claim! However... We're not getting the option to Declare Victory? I'm pretty sure you meet the requirements, right? πŸ€” 16pagemaintitletext660b7602a192600
PillarAngel[red]*Comet Cards*[/red] --- [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edaa881c23.72379540.jpg[/img] In all actuality, *it is not enough* to just meet the requirements for victory. At the beginning of the game, all victory conditions start *inactive* and *cannot be claimed*. A victory condition can be made active by purchasing a [blue]*Comet card*[/blue] from the Market. Two are mixed in with the *last twelve cards* in each deck. As soon as a player purchases one from the Market, it is immediately discarded and the player *must* choose one inactive victory condition to become *active*, making it go up for grabs for *all players*!17pr_china660b7602a192600PREN070_ZupyKrakowskieCompany_tokens 14 PREN121X_NomadsOfTlemcen_tokens 9
PillarAngelNow go win this thing! Click on the first *Comet card* in the *East Market* then click *Continue* in this box to purchase it! (After all this time, it is still bugged, and you'll hit *Confirm* in a real game at the top!)18pr_victory_ageOfByzantine_slot660b7602a192600COMET2_Nostradamus_tokens 16
PillarAngel*Click* on the *top victory condition (The Medieval Age)*, then click *Continue* in this box to make it *active*! (No bugs are gonna stopping ya from winning!)1EmpireSquare_England-front660b76157131e00
PillarAngelThat *glorious action* has now appeared! Click *Declare Victory* then click on the *active victory condition (Renaissance Victory)*, then click on *Confirm at the top* to *win the game*!1pr_china660b761aa81bf10
PillarAngel[red]*Congratulations!!*[/red] --- [green]*You now know how to play Pax Renaissance!!*[/green] Good luck and have fun! The future of Medieval Europe is now in your hands!
