NekonyancerWelcome to *Zola,* an abstract game of annihiliation by Mark Steere!
Your objective is simple: [blue]remove all of your opponent's checkers from the board!1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Nekonyancer[red]Each turn, you must choose one checker to move.[/red]
If you move onto an opponent's checker, you *capture* it! The rules for movement are different depending on whether your checker is *capturing* or not.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Nekonyancer[blue]If capturing, you must move:[/blue]
- In a straight line, in any direction.
- As many spaces as you like, though you can't jump over checkers.
- to a space that is *closer* or *equidistant* to the center of the board.
[blue]If not capturing, you must move:[/blue]
- 1 space in any direction.
- to a space that is *farther or equidistant* from the center of the board.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerLet's try it!
*Select your checker in the bottom-left corner.*4square_0_0010square_0_0 2
NekonyancerThe game has now highlighted all the spaces you can move to in purple.
*Let's move onto this one to capture the opponent's checker!*1square_0_1629f6fdf1790c10square_0_1 6
NekonyancerLike many 2-player games, the opponent has the option to switch colors and keep your first move as their own.
This game, they'll decide not to switch.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment629f6fe611fc500
NekonyancerThe opponent moved from [blue]*this space*[/blue] onto [red]*this one,*[/red] capturing our checker.
It doesn't look like they moved toward the center, but the two spaces are actually *equidistant* from the center, so this was legal!1square_1_0629f70200199b00square_0_1 6 square_1_0 7
NekonyancerIf you want to get technical, there are six levels of distance from the center. Spaces that are in the *same level* are *equidistant* and can be moved to whether one is capturing or not!

I know that might be confusing, but it will make sense soon. :)2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment629f70200199b00
Nekonyancer*Let's select [red]this checker[/red] for our next move.*3square_1_1629f70200199b10square_1_1 6
NekonyancerAgain, the legal spaces are highlighted in purple. We can move to [red]*these spaces*[/red] because we would be capturing toward the center.
We can't move to [blue]*this one*[/blue] because it would be capturing away from the center!
[green]*These two spaces*[/green] are allowed because we'd be moving away from the center without capturing!1square_2_1629f702e4fbea00square_0_0 8 square_0_1 7 square_1_0 8 square_1_2 6 square_2_1 6
Nekonyancer*Let's move to this space!*2square_0_0629f702e4fbea10square_0_0 6
NekonyancerSince this space is so far away from the center, the only spaces it can be attacked from are *[red]these,*[/red] and all the spaces in between would have to be cleared first!1square_0_0629f702f47bce00square_0_5 6 square_5_0 6
NekonyancerEventually, the board will start to clear out, and non-capturing moves will become more and more common.
You might reach a situation where a player cannot move. In this case, the player simply passes until they have a legal move again. There will never be a situation where neither player can move.
[green]When one player has eliminated all of their opponent's checkers, they win!2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment629f702f47bce00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Zola!*[/blue]
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a question!
