Report history
The rules (in French, linked from the game page) say that if a player makes Quarto but doesn't see it (and so, doesn't announce it but proceeds instead to choose a piece and offers it to his opponent), the other player can announce Quarto instead of taking the piece offered (and then, he wins).
So, two things:
1) This is not the same as taking back a previously played piece that could have been played to win but hasn't to place it into the winning position.
2) To conform exactly to the rules, it would be needed to ask the player, after each move played, if he wants to declare Quarto or not. That would be a little tedious and slow down the game, so the choice has been made for a smoother game flow to have the game declare Quarto immediately when it's made by either one of the players (even if this allows for the possibility to win by accident, it should be pretty rare).
