Carcassonne
Carcassonne is a tile-laying game in which players fill in the countryside around the fortified city.
They will lay tiles and place their followers onto roads and into cities, monasteries and fields.
Players score points by having followers on features as they're completed. The player who makes the most strategic placements of tiles and followers will score the most points and win the game.
Carcassonne won the famous Spiel des Jahres award in 2001 and is one of the most played board games in the world.
Number of players: 2 - 5

Rules summary
TURN ORDER:
1) On your turn you MUST place a tile from your hand in such a way that it continues the features of any tiles it touches. Each of the 4 edges of the tile will have one of 3 features: City, Road, or Farm. The 4th feature, Monastery, only appears in the center of a tile.
Normally you only hold 1 tile in your hand at a time, but the Strategic variant allows you to hold 3, and choose which one to play.
2) On your turn you MAY place a follower (meeple) on the tile you placed. Where the follower is placed on the tile determines it's role, and it stays on that tile until the feature it is on is scored.
Note that you cannot place a follower onto a feature if that feature already has any other followers on it. The only way to get multiple followers on a single feature, is to start them as separate features, then later place a tile that joins them.
3) If any features were completed by the tile placement you MUST pause the game to score the completed feature(s), and return any followers on them to the players' supplies.
- A Road is completed when both ends of the road are closed, or connect in a loop.
- A City is completed when it is surrounded by walls on every side.
- A Monastery is completed when it is fully surrounded by 8 tiles (Horizontally, Vertically, & Diagonally).
- A Farm is never "completed" and will only score at the end of the game.
SCORING:
First, count the number of followers within the feature. Whichever player has the most, gets the points. If players are tied for the most followers, then they each get full points.
- Roads score the same whether they complete during the game, or at game end. 1 Point per tile of the road
- Cities score based on the tiles of the city plus the number of coat of arms (blue shields) within the city. At game end, this is the number of points you earn, however if the city is closed during the game, you score twice this number of points.
- First edition rules reduce this number to 2 if the city is completed using only 2 tiles.
- Monasteries score 1 plus the number of tiles surrounding it (so 9 if completed).
- Farms score 3 points for each completed city touching that farm.
- First edition instead counts the number of followers on farms that touch each city, and gives 3 points to the player with the most followers.
EXPANSIONS:
The River is a mini-expansion with no significant rules changes. All River tiles must be played first, creating one long river from which to start the rest of the game.
Inns & Cathedrals:
- A Road with an Inn on it (small lake w/red building) scores 2vp/tile when completed & 0vp at game end.
- A City with a Cathedral in it (large building w/all 4 sides city) scores 3vp/tile when completed & 0vp at game end.
- When scoring a feature & counting followers, a Large Follower counts as 2 normal followers.
Traders & Builders:
- There are 3 types of goods you can collect (Wine, Wheat, & Cloth). The player who places the tile that closes a city (even if they have no followers in that city) collects all the goods in that city. At game end the person with the most Wine gets 10 points, the most Wheat gets 10 points, & the most Cloth gets 10 points.
- When adding to a city or road you already have a follower on, you can add the builder. Afterwards, any turn you place a tile adding to that feature grants you a 2nd tile to place immediately (Max 2 plays per turn).
- When adding to a farm you already have a follower on, you may play the pig. When scoring farms at game end, the player with the majority of farmers still gets 3vp/city connected to the farm, while the pig gains 1vp/connected city.
The Princess & the Dragon:
This expansion is more complicated, and would be harder to summarize here. Until someone does so, I recommend the pdf or https://wikicarpedia.com/car/The_Princess_and_The_Dragon
Warning: It is more PvP, as it involves being able to remove your opponents' followers from the board without scoring them (the Dragon is hungry).
