This tutorial exists thanks to: villager

villagerWelcome to the tutorial for Azul. The king of Portugal wants his royal palace walls covered with pretty ceramic mosaic tiles. Choose your tiles wisely and carefully, as other tile layers are also competing for the same tiles to use on their walls.1maintitlebar_content000
villagerFor the best tutorial experience (and future gameplay too), can you please use these zoom controls, located on the top right? [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec60dcf199.46643445.jpg[/img] Alternatively, zoom out your browser screen until you see the circle of Factories.. and your player board. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec610b4463.09369220.jpg[/img] 2zoom-out000zoom-controls 6
villagerExcellent! Now let's get right into the game by understanding what you see in front of you.. and the choices you can make. On the left, you see the circle of *Tile Factories*. Depending on player count, we will see: • In a 2-player game, 5 Factory displays. [green]• In THIS 3-player game, 7 Factory displays.[/green] • In a 4-player game, 9 Factory displays.3pagemaintitletext001bag 9
villagerThis is your player board (ie palace wall) that you need to decorate with SPECIFIC tiles. See the faint outline of the Blue, Yellow, Red, Black, and White tiles?4player-table-1684537-wall000player-table-1684537-wall 6
villagerAt the beginning of a ROUND, all Factories randomly display 4 tiles of the various colors. [tip] As you learn more and become a master tile layer, you will discover (from the rule book :) ) that the game comes with 20 tiles each for the 5 colors. 5bag001
villagerA ROUND is broken up into 2 Phases... We are right now in Phase 1, "Choose tiles from the Factory displays". It's [red] Red player's [/red] turn.6pagemaintitletext000
villagerAs they want the Blue tiles, they decided to grab ALL the Blue tiles (2 Blue tiles) from the Factory (at the 11-o-clock position).1player-hand-9195743161fadaf9dbd2d00
villagerLike any factory, things are never neat and tidy. :) The remaining 2 tiles (White and Black) have fallen to the factory floor.2bag61fadaf9dbd2d01tileCount1 12 tileCount2 12
villagerBGA is prompting the player to "choose a line to place" the 2 Blue tiles. What's a line?3pagemaintitletext61fadaf9dbd2d00
villagerNotice the pyramid of empty squares, for each ROW of your palace wall? That's the "line". [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec615a38e4.84862350.jpg[/img] In the world of Azul, --- one needs to FILL the line --- with a SINGLE COLOR of tiles, --- before that colored tile can be set on the wall, in that ROW.4maintitlebar_content61fadaf9dbd2d00
villagerYour opponent decided to place the 2 Blue tiles on the 4th Line. [green]*Once they complete this line with 4 Blue tiles, they can lay a Blue tile on their palace wall to score points, on the corresponding 4th row.*[/green]1player-table-9195743161fadafd392ec00
villagerAnd that's it! Turns are really quick in Azul. To summarize, on your turn, *1) pick a factory display* *2) pick ALL tiles of a single color from that factory* *3) place tiles on a Line that has space to accommodate them* Of course, there are some twists to these rules.. we'll soon see them :) 1pagemaintitletext61fadb01c775100
villager[green]Green player[/green] took 3 Black tiles from the Factory (at the 3-o-clock position). Like before, remaining tile (Blue tile) also fell to the floor.1pagemaintitletext61fadb0c71ad100tileCount3 12
villagerAnd then they placed those 3 Black tiles in Line 3. I should point out the excellent BGA Game Summary log on the right side (found in every game on BGA) that will help you follow along your opponents turns, and the game. Really useful when you play turn based asynchronous games with the wonderful BGA community from around the world.1log_361fadb17a761b00
villagerFinally, it's your turn. You must be wondering.. picking and placing tiles is easy enough.. but WHICH tiles should one choose, and WHY? The strategy of Azul, and its deep simplicity, lies in how you score the tiles. Remember, it's a competition to be the best tile layer. So let's get those Victory Points, aka VPs !!1pagemaintitletext61fadb1c3d44300
villagerThere are multiple ways to score points in Azul. Let me highlight some of the easy ones first, that give you big points! Notice the handy reference at the bottom right your player board. It's highlighting that a : [green] *Completed row awards 2 points* *Completed column awards 7 points* *Laying 5 tiles of any one color gets you 10 points* [/green]2pagemaintitletext61fadb1c3d44300player-table-1684537-wall 10
villagerLet's grab some Blue tiles from the Factory at the 7-o-clock position. Again remember, when taking tiles, you MUST take ALL tiles of that color. [red](unfortunately the tutorial will proceed only if you click the bottom-most Blue tile)[/red]3tile6161fadb1c3d44310
villagerNote that BGA lets you *Undo Tile Selection* if you decide to ever change your mind in an actual game. 1undoTakeTiles_button61fadb347fd6f00
villagerLet's add those 2 Blue tiles to the 2nd Line.2player-table-1684537-line361fadb347fd6f10player-table-1684537-line2 16
villagerAnd with that, congratulations! You have COMPLETED a LINE. A completed line (comprised of a single color) allows you to place that color tile on the wall "row". which we will do in Phase 2, *after all the tiles have been taken from the Factory displays, including the spilled ones lying on the floor* To emphasize, [green]- laying a color tile in the 1st Row of your wall, needs only 1 matching color tile to be collected from the Factory[/green] [red]- laying a color tile in the 5th Row of your wall, needs 5 matching color tiles to be collected from the factory[/red]1player-table-1684537-line261fadb386c6a300
villagerWith that intent, Red player grabbed all the 2 Blue tiles from the factory display at 9-o-clock... and spilled the remaining 2 tiles on the floor. BGA helpfully puts counters on the tiles scattered on the floor, so you can quickly see how many there are.1tileCount261fadb44c373b00tileCount1 12 tileCount2 12 tileCount3 12 tileCount5 12
villager... and now they too have completed the 4th line with the single color of 4 Blue tiles. 1player-table-9195743161fadb475607500
villagerIt's your turn! Those spilled tiles on the floor are really adding up. Those 4 White tiles look very tempting, as it will let you immediately complete the 4th Line too. So here's the first rule twist.. on your turn, not only can you pick ALL tiles of a single color from one of the factory displays, but *you can also pick up ALL tiles of a single color from the factory floor*1tileCount261fadb659fcf000
villagerBut the FIRST PLAYER that decides to take tiles from the factory floor, must ALSO take the "1st Player" tile. This has an interesting effect.. 1) They get the benefit of starting the next round and getting first dibs of all the freshly baked tiles displayed in the factories 2) But, they take a score penalty too.2tile1661fadb659fcf000
villagerLet's do it! Take the 4 White tiles on offer on the factory floor. (again, click very specifically on the spot where the hand is pointing, for the tutorial to continue)3pagemaintitletext61fadb659fcf010tileCount2 16
villageras explained, along with the 4 White tiles, you also grabbed the 1st Player tile. As this cannot be placed or laid anywhere, it FALLS to YOUR FLOOR. Notice the 7 spaces at the bottom of your player board? Each space has a negative penalty score on top, starting with -1 on the left most space. [red]Tiles that you pick up from a factory, that cannot be placed in a line, will fall to your floor. All the spaces containing fallen tiles will ADD their negative points. Ie if 3 tiles have fallen this round, then 4 points will be deducted.[/red]1player-table-1684537-line061fadb6987cad00player-table-1684537-line0 8
villagerI'm sure you now know exactly what to do with those 4 White tiles.. choose the right action to continue with the tutorial :)2player-table-wrapper-168453761fadb6987cad10
villagerIt's your turn again! 3 Black tiles on the floor.. and no first player penalty also! Let's take it! [red](please try clicking one of the three black tiles for the tutorial to continue.. if one doesn't work, try another)[/red]1maintitlebar_content61fadb89b8a4610tileCount1 16
villagerNotice BGA is highlighting all the valid line spaces with a red outline. Lines 2 and 4 are already completed.. so cannot go there. If you try placing these 3 tiles in Line 1, then as it has space for only 1 tile, it will result in 2 tiles falling to the floor... a lot of negative points. Lines 3 and 5 can take all our tiles. 1player-table-1684537-line561fadb8ca09c600player-table-1684537-line1 11 player-table-1684537-line3 11 player-table-1684537-line5 11
villager*With the goal of completing lines* and laying tiles on our palace wall (we need those points!) , choose the right action on the game screen to continue the tutorial :)2player-table-1684537-line561fadb8ca09c610
villagerCongratulations! You have now understood the core rules in Azul. Just a couple more fun rules to review..1player-table-1684537-line361fadb8ed3f5400
villagerYour turn again! The round is almost over.. all the factory displays are empty, and only the spilled over tiles remain on the floor to be taken by all players. *With the goal of completing a line at the end of this turn*, let's take the Yellow tile.1tileCount461fadba8cf49610tileCount4 16
villagerAnd now let's place it in the appropriate line now, which when completed, will let you place this Yellow tile on your wall, and score points.1player-table-1684537-wall61fadbc19e68910
villager[green]All tiles have now been taken! It's time for Phase 2.. "Wall Tiling".[/green] *Remember that tiles in "completed lines" can now be laid on the walls for scoring*. BGA will helpfully and automatically do this for us now.. Starting with the first player in this round, ie Red player, their 1st line was complete.. so that colored White tile was laid on the wall. [green]*A single wall tile, with no adjacent tiles (vertically or horizontally), scores 1 point.*[/green]1player-table-9195743161fadbdab2c5200player-table-91957431-wall 8
villagerBGA now scores the next completed line.. The Red tile has no adjacent wall tiles, so it too scores only 1 point.2player-table-9195743161fadbdab308600player-table-91957431-wall 8
villagerAs the 3rd line is incomplete, no wall tiles are placed and hence there is no score. However, the 4th line is completed, so the Blue tile gets laid.. and like the other tiles, as it has no adjacent tiles, it scores only 1 point.3player-table-9195743161fadbdab36d800player-table-91957431-wall 8
villagerTime for Green player to score their board.. will let you watch that so you understand the scoring..4player_name_9194647861fadbdab36d800
villagerTime to score your completed lines. How much will the 1st completed line's Yellow wall tile score?5player-table-1684537-wall61fadbdab481500player-table-1684537-wall 8
villagerThat's right .. 1 point, as there are no adjacent wall tiles. In future rounds, the more adjacent tiles you have, the better your scores! Consider the 2nd completed line of Blue tiles now.. what is that going to score? 6player-table-1684537-wall61fadbdab4b7800player-table-1684537-wall 8
villagerDid i hear you shout "2 points"? If yes, take a bow! You now know how to strategically score in Azul. :) For those that whispered something else, it's 2 points because the Blue wall tile is adjacent to another wall tile (the Yellow one).. so both tiles score! (that is why i had you select Yellow earlier :) ) Ok let's think about completed Line 3... what is the Black tile going to score when laid on the wall?7player-table-1684537-wall61fadbdab4f1b00player-table-1684537-wall 8
villagerThat's right.. a lone and singular 1 point, as there are no adjacent previously placed wall tiles. Hope you can now see how important it is to 1) plan ahead, by grabbing the wall tile colors you need from the factories to complete lines 2) then place that wall tile color to score points!!8player-table-1684537-wall61fadbdab531600player-table-1684537-wall 8
villagerAll right.. one more completed line left to score... the 4th one with the White tiles. What's that going to score when laid on the wall?10player-table-1684537-wall61fadbdab531600player-table-1684537-wall 8
villagerPerfect! For all the reasons and rules described earlier, again its only 1 point! To summarize with some more examples, [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec617d0db7.61360570.jpg[/img] placing the yellow tile gives you 3 points for the 3 horizontally linked tiles (including the newly placed yellow tile). [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec619c6878.99925997.jpg[/img] placing the blue tile gives you 3 points for the vertically linked tiles [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec61b9b794.42538813.jpg[/img] placing the yellow tile gives you not only 4 points for the horizontally linked tiles but also 3 points for the vertical ones.11maintitlebar_content61fadbdab56c000player-table-1684537-wall 8
villagerRemember the 1st Player marker tile that fell to your floor? As it's on the left most -1 penalty space, BGA will deduct that from your score.12player-table-168453761fadbdab56c000
villagerCurrent VPs / scores are shown on the player panels here.. You are currently tied for the lead with 4 points.13overall_player_board_168453761fadbdab597800player_board_1684537_firstPlayerWrapper 8 player_name_91957431 8 player_name_91946478 8
villagerA new round begins! Like before, BGA randomly distributes 4 tiles on every Factory Display, from the remaining tiles left in the bag.14bag61fadbdab75e300
villagerAs you picked the 1st Player tile in the last round, you get to go first!15firstPlayerToken61fadbdab79ab00
villagerLet's take these 3 Red tiles from the 1-o-clock factory display. (please click the bottom most red tile for tutorial to continue)16tile1461fadbdab79ab10
villagerAnd let's place it on the 5th line... Why the 5th line you ask? I see lots of reds left in the display.. laying wall tiles in the 5th row needs 5 of that color.. so lets take advantage of our first turn!1player-table-1684537-line561fadc035e44a10player-table-1684537-line5 16
villagerYour opponent picked a Yellow tile, and decided the complete the 3rd line (which was incomplete from the previous round).1pagemaintitletext61fadc338165800
villagerit's your turn again! Let's take the 2 White tiles from the factory display at the 7-o-clock position. (please choose the right side white tile to continue)1tile5761fadc3cb97ad10
villagerOne final rule to review for placing tiles in a line.. So far, you've seen that tiles taken from the factory must be: 1) placed in an empty line OR 2) placed in a line where that tile color already exists and there is still space left. Excess tiles drop to the floor resulting in negative points. And now, [red]3) You are not allowed to place tiles of a certain color in a pattern line whose corresponding line of your wall already holds a tile of that color[/red]1maintitlebar_content61fadc516ddb300
villager[red]... which means you CANNOT place the 2 White tiles in Line 4, as you have already laid in a White tile on your wall in that row.[/red] [green]BGA helpfully highlights only the eligible lines with a red border, ie lines 1 to 3.[/green] [red]Line 5 is not eligible as it is already partially filled with Red tiles, and will not allow White tiles to be placed there.[/red]2player-table-1684537-wall61fadc516ddb300
villagerAnd with that, you now know all the rules to play a fun game of Azul with BGA friends and family from around the world. But wait you say.. when does the game end?! :)1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61fadc5b3dc3900
villagerThe game ends right after the Wall-tiling phase in which *at least one player has completed at least one horizontal line of 5 consecutive tiles on her wall.* Once the game has ended, score additional points if you have achieved the row, column, and all-5-tiles-of-a-color goals, that I described earlier.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61fadc5b3dc3900
villager*Congratulations on completing this tutorial. Hope you enjoyed it!* See you at the next open table for Azul! May the best tile layer win! [green]P.S. You will get to rate this tutorial in the next popup. If you feel it can be made better, can you please share your feedback with Villager?
