leafsnackWelcome to [blue]*Hive*[/blue], the hexagonal chess-alternative where the pieces are the board!
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec4e08bd26.30713014.png[/img]
Players will go back and forth either *placing* a piece, or *moving* a piece. Since we start the game with a clean slate, we'll have to place a piece first.1maintitlebar_content000

Click the *[red]Spider[/red]*, then click on the board to place it.2token_list_88690205_item_5010token_list_88690205_item_5 6
leafsnackNice! Now, our opponent has placed their own piece.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec4e7070b3.71822567.png[/img]
From now on, whenever you want to *place* a piece, it must be [green]*adjacent* to a piece of your color that you've already placed[/green]...
...but [red]it *cannot touch* any of your opponent's pieces[/red].

Before you're allowed to move any pieces on your board, you must place your *Queen Bee*. Let's go ahead and place them on the [red]left side of the Spider[/red].2token_list_88690205_item_161f1ee7f6cf7c10token_list_88690205_item_1 6
leafsnack[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec4ec26ca6.95680532.png[/img]
Cool. Our opponent has placed their *Queen* as well. You must place your Queen within the [blue]first four turns[/blue] of the game, although strategies vary on when the best time to do this is.
Now, both of you have unlocked the ability to move pieces around.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f1ee931e41f00
leafsnackThere are five types of pieces in Hive, and each one has its own [green]*pattern of movement*[/green].
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec4f63be88.28440756.png[/img]
Just like how the *knights* in chess can only move in an L-shape, and the *bishops* can only move diagonally, each piece has its own set of rules on how it can move around the hive.
[blue]Let's briefly learn what each piece does.[/blue]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f1ee931e91d00
leafsnackFirst up is the [green]*Grasshopper*[/green].
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec4f8b83c3.70104873.png[/img]
Let's play a [green]Grasshopper[/green] of our own. Place it on the hex [red]below[/red] our Queen & Spider pieces.4token_dots_561f1ee931e91d10token_list_88690205_item_6 6
leafsnack[green]*Grasshoppers*[/green] can jump over one or more pieces in a single straight line.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec4edc9184.09613271.png[/img]
Click on our [green]Grasshopper[/green] to see its eligible destinations. *Leap it* over the longer of the two lines.
(!!! This may not work on some Chrome browsers.)2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f1eee7b70f210token_insect_6 16
leafsnackNext up is the [blue]*Soldier Ant*[/blue].
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec4f140599.37957888.png[/img]
[blue]Ants[/blue] can move from their position to any other position around the edge of the Hive, making them the strongest & most versatile piece in the game.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec4f392b36.78813041.png[/img]
You can click our [blue]Ant[/blue] to see its potential destinations from here.1maintitlebar_content61f1ef21e212100token_insect_9 16
leafsnackNext is the [red]*Spider*[/red].
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec4fa4c147.09209429.png[/img]
Like the Ant, [red]Spiders[/red] move along the edge of the hive. But unlike the Ant,
it can only move [red]*exactly 3 spaces at a time.*[/red]
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec4fc45c00.46747984.png[/img]
*Move* our [red]Spider[/red] so that it touches our opponent's Spider.1maintitlebar_content61f1ef8303c3610token_insect_4 16
leafsnackTry clicking our other [red]Spider[/red] to see its potential moves.
That's right, /there are none/. This is because moving it would break another critical rule of Hive:
[green]*You cannot break the hive.*[/green]
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec4ff2eef5.73211604.png[/img]
You are not allowed to move a piece if it would *split* the hive at any point during its movement.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec502fab09.36884152.png[/img]1maintitlebar_content61f1ef924b02a00token_insect_5 18
leafsnackIn the same vein, you are [red]not allowed[/red] to *move* a piece through an [blue]opening[/blue] that is *too narrow* to allow it to physically pass through.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec51c99cd3.32511584.png[/img]
The only exceptions to this are Beetles & [green]Grasshoppers[/green], who do not move horizontally around the hive.2player_name_8869020561f1ef924b02a00token_insect_5 18
leafsnackOur next piece is the *Beetle*.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec505b6c06.58044773.png[/img]
They can move a single space in any direction (provided they don't split the hive to do so), but they also have their own unique ability:
[green]They can *hop up on top of the hive.*[/green]
Let's try [blue]moving our Beetle[/blue] *on top* of our [red]Spider[/red].
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec507a2a16.89345321.png[/img]1maintitlebar_content61f1efa6681b810token_insect_2 16 token_list_88690205_item_3 8
leafsnackIf you mouse over our *Beetle* now, you'll see that it is stacked on top of our [red]Spider[/red].
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec50a502f1.95047466.png[/img]
[blue]Any pieces underneath a Beetle are *immobile* until the Beetle moves off of them.[/blue] This can be critical for trapping your opponent's Queen and other pieces.
Stacks of pieces count only as the color of the topmost piece (the Beetle).1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f1efb5abf8d00
leafsnack*Beetles* can even hop on top of other Beetles.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec50de20a4.46738165.png[/img]1token_list_8869020561f1efd3ad6f000
leafsnackFinally, we come to our most vulnerable piece:
The *Queen Bee*.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec51119539.35145061.png[/img]
The Queen can only move a [blue]*single space at a time*[/blue] along the edge of the hive, similar to the King in chess.
Our Queen is not currently landlocked by other pieces, so let's go ahead and move them downwards to safety.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec512c85a9.57882167.png[/img]4maintitlebar_content61f1efd3ae0d000token_insect_1 7
leafsnackTo [blue]win the game[/blue], you must *surround* your opponent's *Queen* [green]*on all six sides*[/green].
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec51650236.42343221.png[/img]
The surrounding pieces can be owned by either player. Go ahead and *find the [blue]winning move*[/blue] that moves one of our pieces into the final slot surrounding their Queen.
[green](Hint: Which of our pieces can currently move?)[/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f1f017170ff10
