Yamss*Welcome to the tutorial for Race for the Galaxy!* In this game you’ll use your wits and careful planning to build the best intergalactic civilisation. This fast paced, engine building card game elegantly balances the easy-to-learn, difficult-to-master attributes. Every game will incorporate the universe of unique cards differently and will leave you itching to play again the moment it’s over.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
YamssIn this game, turns are played *simultaneously*, with each turn presenting opportunities to play cards or manage goods. The winner will be decided by *victory points* which you gain from either: - Playing cards - Consuming goods2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
YamssAs a brief introduction to the interface, this area here shows what cards are in your hand and are available to be played,3hand_panel000player_hand 1
Yamssand this area is your *tableau*, which is essentially your play area.4tableau_panel_86364635000tableau_panel_86364635 1
YamssAt the start of the game, you’re given a number of cards to choose your starting cards from. For now, we'll select "Galactic Federation", "New Economy" and "Galactic Trade Emissaries" to *discard* and let’s start the game!1player_hand_item_16161ee4cb24402610player_hand_item_156 1 player_hand_item_161 1 card_231 1
YamssEach round of Race For the Galaxy consists of one or more of *5 possible phases*. Each player chooses a phase *simultaneously* and the phases selected by *at least one player* will be played by *everyone* that round.1phasechoicebtn_161ee4cc9f133a00
YamssDuring the phase you selected, you will also get a small *bonus*! Some phases have 2 choices for the bonus when selecting that phase.2phasechoicebtn_161ee4cc9f133a00
YamssFeel free to take a moment to hover over each phase to get an idea of what they are and the possible bonuses. We’ll go through them all in this tutorial so when you're ready, choose 'Develop' to move on.3phasechoicebtn_161ee4cc9f133a10phasechoicebtn_3 1
YamssA player has picked the *Explore* phase, so we *all* do that action first. This phase lets you *choose cards* to add to your hand and will be your main source of cards in the early parts of the game. [tip] [green]Be careful with the number of cards you have. The hand limit at the end of each round is 10![/green]1explore_phase61ee4cda37baa00
YamssBefore we move on, let’s go over some card anatomy. - The top left shape will dictate whether a card is a *development* (diamond) or a *world* (circle). - The number inside this shape is the card’s *cost*. - The number inside the hexagon is the number of *victory points* this card is worth when played. 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61ee4cda37baa00
Yamss- The left side of the card shows the card’s *powers* and which phase they activate in. [tip] [green]The symbols are quite confusing at first, but become more intuitive as you play. When you’re starting, just hover over the card for a written description of its powers.[/green] 3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61ee4cda37baa00
YamssLet’s pick "Space Marines" to keep. Click the card, then select "Done" at the top to confirm your choice.4explore_set_item_12361ee4cda37baa10explore_set_item_123 1
YamssDuring the Develop phase, everyone may place a *development*. Since we chose this phase, the development will *cost 1 less!* The kicker here is that the cost to play cards is actually the number of cards we have to *discard from our hand*.1develop_phase61ee4cf2d053900
YamssPlay "Public Works". Since it costs 1 less, you can play it at *no cost!*6player_hand_item_11861ee4cf2d053900player_hand_item_118 1
Yamss*Congratulations!* You have played your first card. Once played and in your tableau, your cards will apply their powers from the *next phase*.1card_11861ee4d0799d3a00
YamssRemember, even though you picked the Develop phase, all your opponents get the opportunity to play a development card as well!1card_12161ee4d140792400
YamssThe *Settle* phase lets you play a *world* card from your hand. There are 2 different categorisations for worlds that are important to know.2settle_phase61ee4d1408a4500
YamssMost worlds will have a black number in a black circle. These worlds are played just like developments by discarding the appropriate number of cards from your hand. *Military* worlds have a red number in a red circle. These worlds do not have a cost to play, but require your military to *match or exceed* the number to conquer (play). 3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61ee4d1408a4500
YamssYour military is increased by various cards (such as "Space Marines") and the sum is conveniently depicted here. 4milforceicon_8636463561ee4d1408a4500
YamssThe other categorisation for worlds is their production status. Grey worlds *do not produce goods*. Worlds with a coloured circle will *produce the corresponding good every Produce phase*. *Windfall* worlds have a coloured halo. They *start with the corresponding good* on it when played, but will generally not produce goods during the Produce phase. 5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61ee4d1408a4500
Yamss[tip] [green]Each world can only hold 1 good so be sure to use it prior to trying to produce more![/green]6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61ee4d1408a4500
YamssThere are 4 types of *goods* in the game - Novelty goods (Blue) - Rare elements (Brown) - Genes (Green) - Alien technology (Yellow) [tip] [green]It’s not easy to remember the name of each good, so you can hover over the ‘Consume’ phase at the start of each round to get a reminder.[/green] 7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61ee4d1408a4500
YamssPlay "Destroyed World" by discarding "Artist Colony" as the cost.8player_hand_item_18861ee4d1408a4500player_hand_item_188 1
Yamss*Beautifully done!* We’re now at the start of the next round. You’ll notice that we didn’t play the last 2 phases and that’s because nobody selected those phases.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61ee4d3f8415d00
YamssFor the next round, select the *Consume* phase using the ‘*$*’ button.2phasechoicebtn_561ee4d3f8415d10phasechoicebtn_5 1
YamssBy selecting the ‘*$*’ this round, you gain an *additional trade action* which is performed at the start of this phase. This allows you to sell *one* good for *cards*. Click the *Rare Elements* (brown good) to sell it for 3 cards! 1card_18861ee5515d5d6010goodsell_202 1
YamssDuring the *Consume* phase, every player *must* consume as many goods as they are able using their *consume powers* (although the player may choose which order this occurs). These powers are present on some cards next to the IV (consume) and will generally yield *cards* and/or *victory points*. 1consume_phase61ee5520ef03c00
YamssVictory points gained from consume actions will be taken from a *shared supply* of *victory point chips*. 2vp_nbr_remain_img61ee5520ef03c00
YamssTo consume a good, first click on the good, then click on the card which you want to consume with. Click on the *Novelty goods* (blue good), then on the "Public Works" to consume the good for *1 victory point!*3card_23461ee5520ef03c10good_146 1
Yamss*Great work!* With that powerful turn, you've secured yourself cards and a victory point to put yourself ahead of the opposition.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61ee55267de1d00
YamssIn the *Produce* phase, everyone’s *production worlds* will produce a good as long as it does not already have a good on it. If you selected the Produce phase, you will also be able to produce a good on *one* of your *windfall worlds*.2produce_phase61ee55268099900
YamssEven though 2 players have selected the Produce phase this round, the phase is only played *once*.3produce_phase61ee55268099900
Yamss*And that’s all the rules you need to know to get started!* The game ends at the end of a round if either: - Any player has *12 or more cards in their tableau* - The *victory point chip supply is empty* At that point the victory points are added up and the player with the most *wins*!4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61ee55268568500
Yamss*Congratulations on making it to the end of the tutorial* Hopefully I’ve equipped you well to start building your own galactic empire. Good luck! :)5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61ee55268568500
