Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_luJd1p.jpg[/img] A beautiful island has been discovered, filled with mountains, pastures, hills, fields, and forests. You will be among the first to settle the new world of *Catan!* [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerIn Catan, your [blue]*objective* is to reach *10 points.*[/blue] Points are granted for building settlements, cities, roads, and other developments. To build all these things, we'll need a lot of resources. There are *five types* of resources, each produced by a different sort of terrain on the board. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_gG3s4Q.jpg[/img] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_7ITzWB.jpg[/img]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerTake a look at the board. Each terrain tile has a *number tile* on it. This number determines how productive the tile will be. Each turn, two dice will be rolled. The *sum* of the dice will determine which tiles *produce* their respective resources! [green]It might sound confusing, but you'll see an example in a second![/green]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerAt the beginning of the game, each player must place their first two settlements, one at a time. *Click here to place your settlement!*4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment010cat_place_living_5_3_T 16
NekonyancerAs you can see, *[red]settlements[/red]* are placed not on hexes, but *between* them! They have access to resources from whatever tiles they touch. [blue]Because of the settlement here, we will gain:[/blue] *- Lumber* whenever a *8* is rolled. *- Grain* whenever a *5* is rolled. *- Brick* whenever a *4* is rolled.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74a3855ea400cat_city_5_3_T 1
NekonyancerIn general, it's a good idea to settle next to numbers that the two dice will roll often. [green][tip] If you don't have a head for statistics, just look at the number of dots under each number. The more dots, the more often the number will be rolled![/green]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74a3855ea400
Nekonyancer*Also, notice that we gained one victory point!* This is because every settlement we build is worth a point, including the two we start with!3player_score_9214348762a74a3855ea400
NekonyancerNext, we have to place a road. We should build toward other places we'd like to expand to later on. *Click here to place the road!*4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74a3855ea410cat_place_road_4_3_S 16
NekonyancerWhile settlements go on the corners of tiles, [red]*roads*[/red] go along their *sides,* leading to other corners for other settlements! [green][tip] Each player's first two settlements each come with a free road![/green]1cat_place_road_4_3_S62a74a559463100cat_place_road_4_3_S 1
NekonyancerEach player has placed one settlement. Now it's... [blue]White's turn again?[/blue] That's right! The *placement order* for each player's second settlement is *reversed!* [green]In other words, the placement order for all the starting settlements looks like this:[/green] Player *1.* Player *2.* Player *3.* Player *3.* Player *2.* Player *1.*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74ab6898e500
NekonyancerIt's our turn to place our second settlement! Note that we *cannot* settle at *[blue]these corners:[/blue]* the corners closest to other existing settlements. [red]This is because all settlements must be at least two spaces away from each other![/red]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74af518ba000cat_place_living_0_2_D 2 cat_place_living_1_2_D 2 cat_place_living_1_3_D 2 cat_place_living_3_2_T 2 cat_place_living_3_3_T 2 cat_place_living_3_3_D 2 cat_place_living_3_4_D 2 cat_place_living_4_2_T 2 cat_place_living_4_2_D 2 cat_place_living_4_4_D 2 cat_place_living_6_3_T 2
NekonyancerYour second settlement will determine your starting hand: one card from each tile it touches. *Let's settle here.* It will give us a starting hand of sheep, ore, and grain!2cat_hexselector_3_362a74af518ba010cat_place_living_4_1_T 16
Nekonyancer*Place a road here.*1cat_hexselector_3_262a74b353782710cat_place_road_3_2_W 16
Nekonyancer[green][tip] By the way, if you found all that settlement placement stuff confusing, you can have everyone's settlements placed for them by selecting Starting Setup in the game lobby options. It's under Tiles' Layout. [/green] :) *Everyone has placed their two starting settlements and roads. We're ready to start the game!*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74b42dd7e500
Nekonyancer[blue]You can do four things on your turn:[/blue] 1. *Roll* dice. (Mandatory!) 2. *Trade* resources with other players. 3. *Build,* using resource cards. 4. *Play* development cards. Trading and building can be done as little or as much as you like during your turn, but only after rolling the dice! *Click on "Roll dice" at the top!*2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74b42dd7e510btn_rolldice 16
NekonyancerWe rolled a 3, so [blue]*these two tiles*[/blue] produced a resource for anyone with a settlement on them! We had [red]*a settlement*[/red] on the grain tile, so we drew a grain. No one had a settlement on the brick tile.1cat_dice_162a74b47a9f6100cat_hexselector_2_3 2 cat_hexselector_4_1 2 cat_city_4_1_T 1
NekonyancerYou can see the grain (along with the other cards we started with) in [red]*your hand,*[/red] along the left side of the screen.2tuto_pointer_cat_playerboard_resources62a74b47a9f6100cat_playerboard_resources 1
NekonyancerNext, we can *trade and build.* To initiate a trade, you'd either click on [red]*this button*[/red] or the blue button at the top, but we don't really need to trade right now. We'll get more into trading later! :)3cat_button_showtrade62a74b47a9f6100cat_button_showtrade_text 2 tuto_pointer_cat_button_showtrade_text 3 tuto_pointer_tuto_pointer_cat_button_showtrade_text 1
NekonyancerLet's learn about *building.* There are four different things you can build, all of which are listed [red]*here*[/red] with their respective costs.4tuto_pointer_cat_summary62a74b47a9f6100cat_summary 1
NekonyancerThe resources you actually have in your hand are *[green]checked off*[/green] on this chart, so it's easy to see what you can and can't build! Huh, looks like we have everything we need to buy a *development card!*5cat_summary62a74b47a9f6100
NekonyancerYou can purchase a development card by either clicking on the deck of cards or on the button at the top. *Buy a development card!*6cat_devcards_draw62a74b47a9f6110btn_devcard_draw 16 cat_devcards_draw 16
NekonyancerHmm, it turned out to be a *knight,* but our opponents can't see what it is! We can't play it right now - you can never play a development card on the turn you buy it - but it will definitely come in handy later! There are many kinds of development cards in the deck. Check the rulebook if you want to see them all! Or better yet, play some games and discover them for yourself! :)1cat_card_1662a74b57c73f800
NekonyancerThere's nothing else to do this turn, so *go ahead and click on "Pass" at the top!* We're going to skip a few turns...2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74b57c73f810
NekonyancerThe blue player rolled a 7! [blue]This is important for two reasons:[/blue] *1.* Anyone with 8 or more cards in their hand must immediately choose and discard *half,* rounded down! (If they had 9 cards, they'd discard 4.) *2.* The player who rolled the 7 now gets to move [red]*the robber*[/red] to a new tile! He's been stuck in the desert since the beginning of the game.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74bbb28a3700cat_robber 1
NekonyancerThey moved [red]*the robber*[/red] here! [blue]This does 2 things:[/blue] *1.* The robber blocks this tile. If someone rolls a 9, we wouldn't draw an card like we normally would! *2.* The robber allows the active player (Blue) to steal a random resource card from a player who has a settlement on this tile!1cat_robber62a74bce389fc00cat_robber 1
Nekonyancer*Shoot!* Blue could have stolen from us or White. He chose us, and he randomly took the brick from our hand! :(1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74bd5174ca00
Nekonyancer*White rolled a 7 too!* They moved the robber to [blue]*this tile down here.*[/blue] Now the 8/wood tile is blocked, and they stole an ore from our hand!1cat_robber62a74c0c4181900cat_hexselector_5_3 2
NekonyancerOur turn again. *Roll the dice!*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74c1c227ba10
NekonyancerEnough of this robber nonsense. This is a great time to use our *Knight!* The knight will let us move the robber again, as if we had rolled a seven ourselves! *Click on the Knight card. Alternatively, click on "Play Knight card" at the top!*1cat_card_1662a74c3258f6510cat_card_16 16
NekonyancerNow we need to choose where to move it to. Hmm, both of our opponents have settlements on the 10/ore tile. Let's block it! *Click on the 10/ore tile to place the robber there!*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74c4aa23a210cat_hexselector_2_2 16
NekonyancerWe need to choose who to steal from. *Steal from Nekonyancer!*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74c5bed86210
NekonyancerGreat! We got 1 wood from Nekonyancer. Take that! Our knight card now stays in front of us as part of our *[red]army.*[/red] If we reach *3* knights, we'll receive a special 2 point reward for having the *largest army.* However, this reward can be easily stolen if someone else gets 4 knights!1cat_panel_army_9214348762a74c65e6c5000cat_panel_army_92143487 1
NekonyancerNext, let's learn about trading! *Click on one of the two trade buttons.* A menu should have popped up. Let's ask if anyone wants to trade a brick for our grain! *Click on [red]grain[/red] in the "Give" column and on [blue]brick[/blue] in the "Receive" column. Finally, click on "Propose this deal!"*1cat_hexselector_2_362a74cee9398810btn_trade 16 cat_playertrade_offer_resource_grain 1 cat_playertrade_want_resource_brick 1 tuto_pointer_cat_playertrade_want_resource_brick 2 cat_boardbuttons 16
NekonyancerHuh. Nekonyancer offered a *countertrade.* It's like he said, "No, I won't give you a brick for grain. But I will give you 2 wood, a brick, a sheep, and 2 ore for a grain." ... I don't think Nekonyancer is very good at this game. *Quick! Accept the deal before he changes his mind!*1cat_hexselector_4_162a74d0c9a61210cat_offer_deal_11941354 16
NekonyancerLet's see if you can arrange the next deal on your own! *Initiate a trade. Offer 1 wood for 2 ore.*1cat_hexselector_3_462a74d1a7dd9f10
NekonyancerNekonekoneko4 accepted the trade. *Go ahead and accept their, uh... acceptance.*1cat_hexselector_4_162a74d3fefe5810
Nekonyancer[blue]We have everything we need now to build a new settlement![/blue] First, we have to build a road to reach a viable location. It will cost 1 wood and 1 brick. [green][tip] Remember, settlements must be at least two spaces away from each other![/green] *Click here to place a road!*1cat_place_road_5_4_W62a74d4be209110cat_place_road_5_4_W 16
Nekonyancer*Next, let's build our settlement!* As you can see in the chart, it will cost 1 wood, 1 brick, 1 sheep, and 1 grain. [red]Wait a second, we're missing brick![/red] Not to worry. We can perform *"maritime trading"* to get it!1cat_summary62a74d55e12a600
NekonyancerMaritime trading allows you to trade [blue]four of the same resource[/blue] to the bank for *one* resource of your choice. It's a terrible deal, but sometimes it's your only option! *Click on Maritime Trade.* *Offer 4 ore for 1 brick.* *Click on the new Maritime trade button.*4cat_hexselector_2_362a74d55e12a610cat_playertrade_offer_resource_ore 1 cat_playertrade_want_resource_brick 1 cat_button_showmaritimetrade_text 16
NekonyancerNow we have everything we need! *Click here to place a settlement!*1cat_place_living_6_3_T62a74d6152d4f10cat_place_living_6_3_T 16
Nekonyancer*Great!* In addition to giving us access to the 10/lumber tile, this settlement will let us draw *double* from the 8/lumber tile! Most importantly, the settlement connects us to a *port:* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_NvaWFj.jpg[/img] Now we can trade *3-for-1* through maritime trading instead of *4-for-1!*1cat_hexselector_5_462a74d6b6dad100
Nekonyancer[green]Some other ports offer 2-for-1 deals, but only for certain resources.[/green] For example, this port allows anyone who settles on [blue]*one of these spaces*[/blue] to trade *2 sheep* for 1 of any resource.2cat_place_living_4_4_D62a74d6b6dad100cat_place_living_4_4_D 2 cat_place_living_5_5_T 2
NekonyancerThat was a busy turn. *Go ahead and pass.* There's just a couple things left to go over...3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74d6b6dad110
NekonyancerNekonekoneko4 just used 3 ore and 2 grain to upgrade a *settlement* into a [red]*city,*[/red] gaining one victory point! Cities draw *twice as much* as settlements. [green]From now on, nekonekoneko4 will draw 2 ore whenever a 9 is rolled. He'll draw 3 sheep when 11 is rolled![/green]1cat_hexselector_3_462a74db1a939f00cat_city_2_2_D 1
NekonyancerThe last thing I have to mention is the *longest road bonus.* When someone builds a continuous road (not counting forks) with at least *5* segments, they will get the longest road bonus, worth 2 points! However, just like with the largest army bonus, [red]this bonus can be stolen if someone else builds an even longer road![/red]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74db1a939f00
NekonyancerYou can check the current standings for the longest road in each player's personal info box. Our current longest road is 2!3cat_panel_resources_9214348762a74db1a939f00cat_panel_path_92143487 12 cat_panel_path_11941354 12 cat_panel_path_92146574 12
Nekonyancer[blue]That's everything you need to know! Gameplay will continue as you've seen until someone reaches 10 victory points![/blue] [green]These points can come from:[/green] - Settlements (1 point each) - Cities (2 each) - Some Development cards (1 each) - Longest road (2) - Largest army (2)4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62a74db1a939f00
Nekonyancer*[blue]Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Catan!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message!
