Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_m8ToIv.jpg[/img] 2083. Humanity has been extinct for decades. You are the leader of a tribe of apes. Can you set your tribe on the path to collective intelligence? [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerAfter Us is a *deck-building* game. Each player starts with an identical deck of eight Tamarins. Each round, each player will draw 4 cards, acquire resources, and attract a new ape to their cause. Along the way, they can use excess resources to score *victory points* 💡. [green]The first player to reach 80💡 wins![/green]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Nekonyancer[blue]Each round is split into 3 phases:[/blue] *1.* Assembling the tribe. *2.* Attracting new apes. *3.* Resting.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Nekonyancer[blue]Phase 1: Assembling the tribe.[/blue]---During this phase, each player draws [red]*4 cards*[/red] from their deck. They can then arrange these cards however they like to set up *frames* on the cards. [blue]Let's take a look at a specific card to get a better idea of how this works.[/blue]4card-5-front000card-1-front 1 tuto_pointer_card-1-front 1 card-7-front 1 tuto_pointer_card-7-front 1 card-5-front 1 card-8-front 1 tuto_pointer_card-8-front 1
Nekonyancer[blue]*This card*[/blue] has three frames in its top row. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_b9lRWP.jpg[/img] Do you see how the frame on the left runs off the side of the card? It's meant to connect to another card, but it's not connected right now. These are called *open frames,* and they're no good to us. Open frames are indicated by [red]*red borders.*[/red]5card-1-front000card-1-front 7
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_b9lRWP.jpg[/img] The frame on the right connects to a frame on the next card. This is called a *closed frame.* When we confirm our arrangement, we'll trigger all our closed frames to gain resources or points. Closed frames are indicated by [green]*green borders.*[/green]6card-1-front000
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_b9lRWP.jpg[/img] Note that the frame in the middle of the row is green as well. Frames in the middles of cards are *always* closed. They don't need to connect to any other frames.7card-1-front000
NekonyancerNow that we know how frames work, we can analyze our arrangement. Just focus on the top row of frames for now. [blue]Hmm... is it optimal? Are we closing as many frames as we can? Should we move some cards around?[/blue]8card-7-front000
NekonyancerYes, we should! We can maximize our yield by moving this card. *Click on the [red]left arrow[/red] on the card to move it over!* You got an error, didn't you? Well, it will work when you play a real game. Don't worry. :) *Click on "Continue" instead.*9card-8-front000move-left-3 1
NekonyancerAs you can see, the card shifted over by one slot! To optimize our arrangement, we need to get this card all the way to the left, so you'd need to keep clicking on that [red]*left arrow button.*[/red] [blue]I'll just take care of that for you...[/blue]1card-8-front64ca3047d5a9e00move-left-2 1
NekonyancerOkay, I think our arrangement looks good now. *Click on Validate card order!* It didn't work... well, *click on "Continue" instead.*1card-8-front64ca304a0c01700
NekonyancerNext, we'll reap the benefits from all our closed frames! This is always done from *left to right, top to bottom.* As you can see, the first frame features a *battery.* We'll learn about using batteries later. *Click on the [blue]"Gain 1 🔋" button![/blue] at the top!*2card-8-front64ca305a8d15f10activateEffect-button 2
NekonyancerThe next frame has two *grains.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_2JvlHW.jpg[/img] [red]*Fruit,[/red] [blue]flowers,*[/blue] and *grains* are all used to attract new apes. You'll see how that works soon. *Click on [blue]"Gain 1• 1•"[/blue] at the top!*1card-1-front64ca305e2f33010activateEffect-button 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, I think you get the idea now.[/blue] I'll go ahead and gain the rest of the resources for you.1card-1-front64ca305fab47400
NekonyancerNow we're on to the second row of frames! Frames in the second and third rows often have ">>" in them. [blue]">>" always indicates a trade![/blue] In this case, we can trade 1 fruit for 1💡! Hmm... I don't think we want to focus on points so early in the game, so we'll *skip* this trade, as well as the next two.1card-8-front64ca3063c371d00
NekonyancerOkay, we're finished gaining resources. Next, we'll put them to good use! [blue]Phase 2: Attracting new apes[/blue]---In this phase, each player will secretly choose one of their [red]*four tokens.*[/red] Each token grants a different bonus and allows one to *attract* a different kind of ape.1player-table-92143487-tokens-unplayed64ca340e7f77900player-table-92143487-tokens-unplayed 1
NekonyancerThere are four different species of apes. Well, five, including the Tamarins that everyone starts with. [blue]Each species...[/blue] - has a different sort of bonus that they *usually* provide. - requires us to use a different resource to attract them.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64ca340e7f77900
Nekonyancer[blue]Here's a list of the four ape types, their bonuses, and their costs:[/blue] *Mandrills:* provide 💡. Cost flowers. *Orangutans:* provide batteries. Cost fruits. *Gorillas:* provide rage. Cost grains. *Chimpanzees:* Provide additional triggers for your closed frames. Cost any resource. Each ape costs 3 resources for a Level 1 ape or 6 for a Level 2 ape. Obviously, Level 2 apes are stronger.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64ca340e7f77900
NekonyancerIf you check our inventory, you'll see that we have [blue]*1 flower,[/blue] [red]2 fruits,*[/red] and *3 grains.* We need 3 flowers to attract a Mandrill and 3 fruits to attract an Orangutan, but our 3 grains can be used to attract either a *gorilla* or a *chimpanzee.*4rage-counter-wrapper-9214348764ca340e7f77900
NekonyancerLet's get back to the tokens. Even though we don't have enough resources to attract a Mandrill or Orangutan, we can still pick [green]*those tokens*[/green] and earn the associated bonus if we really want to. But, uh, it's usually not a great idea. *Click on the [red]gorilla[/red] token!*1chooseToken3-button64ca3411ced7e10
NekonyancerGreat! We immediately gained a bonus from our token: [red]*2 rage!*[/red] Rage is used to *remove* unwanted cards from decks. We'll learn more about it later!1rage-counter-9214348764ca4ecf439ca00rage-counter-92143487 1
NekonyancerAs you can see [blue]*here,*[/blue] we have the option to gain the bonus of our opponent's token too! [red]However, this will cost 2 flowers/fruits/grains.[/red] I don't think we need it right now.2neighborEffect1-button64ca4ecf439ca00neighborEffect1-button 2
NekonyancerTime to attract a gorilla! We only have 3 grains, so we'll have to settle for a Level 1 gorilla. *Click [blue]here[/blue] to attract a gorilla!*1buyCard1-3-button64ca4edf89d4810buyCard1-3-button 2
Nekonyancer*Great!* Our new gorilla went on top of our [red]*deck.*[/red] Wanna take a peek at our new card? Just click on "See top card!" But we'll see it in action pretty soon anyway.1card-85-back64ca51b5d5cb500card-85-back 1
NekonyancerOkay, there's nothing else to do this round. When we click on [red]*"End Turn,"*[/red] BGA will execute [blue]Phase 3: Resting.[/blue] Our arrangement of apes will be discarded. We'll then draw four new cards for the next round. *Click on [red]End Turn![/red]*2endTurn-button64ca51b5d5cb510endTurn-button 1
Nekonyancer*Round 2!* Just like before, we have to rearrange our four cards into an optimal arrangement. But this time, we have a raging gorilla to play with! [green]Hmm... how do you think we should arrange them?[/green]1card-85-front64ca51ba656ad00
NekonyancerWell, we definitely want to gain more [red]rage[/red] from our gorilla. [blue]I'll just scootch him over one slot...[/blue]2card-85-front64ca51ba656ad00
NekonyancerThere, now we can trade 2 grains for 3 rage! Next, we'll [blue]validate[/blue] the card order and harvest resources!1card-85-front64ca51c5d92d400
Nekonyancer[red]Hey, wait a second![/red] We couldn't harvest enough *grains* with this arrangement, so we can't trigger the gorilla's closed frame to gain rage! Good thing there are *cancel* buttons at the top! *Click on [green]"Cancel last 9 moves!"[/green]*1card-85-front64ca5200e3c0310cancelLastMoves-button 3
NekonyancerWhew! No harm done. [blue]Let's try a different arrangement this time...[/blue]1card-3-front64ca520d389a500
NekonyancerGreat! With this arrangement, we harvested 2 grains. Now we can trade them in for rage! *Click [blue]here[/blue] to trade!*1activateEffect-button64ca523f6397810activateEffect-button 2
Nekonyancer*Phase 2!* This time, let's attract a chimpanzee. Do you see the ⟲ symbol on the token? That symbol means you can select a closed frame in your arrangement and trigger it again. *Click [blue]here[/blue] to select the chimpanzee token!*1chooseToken4-button64ca52e400b4010chooseToken4-button 2
NekonyancerOkay, now we can choose a frame to reactivate! Hmm... *Click on the frame that provides [blue]1 flower[/blue] and 1 grain!* Still doesn't work. Darn. *Click on "Continue" instead.*1card-3-front64ca532abc75f00
NekonyancerGood. Just like before, we have the option of paying 2 resources to gain the bonus of [red]*our opponent's token,*[/red] which is another ⟲. Hmm... It would be great if we could use that ⟲ to get even more rage... [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_xnvzTj.jpg[/img] [red]...but for that we'll need one more grain![/red]1neighborEffect4-button64ca537a07c3d00neighborEffect4-button 1
NekonyancerLuckily, we can use [red]rage[/red] to get that grain! At any time, any player may use [red]4 rage[/red] to *permanently remove* a card in their arrangement from the game. When they do, they'll get whatever resource is shown in the top-right corner of the card!2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64ca537a07c3d00
Nekonyancer[red]*This card*[/red] will grant a *grain* when it is removed! Perfect! *Click on the [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_zZP7Ys.jpg[/img] button to remove the card from the game! Then click on "Confirm!"*3card-4-front64ca537a07c3d10card-4-front 1
Nekonyancer*Excellent!* Now that we have all the grain we need, click [blue]*here*[/blue] to activate the bonus from our opponent's token. It didn't work... so *click on continue instead.*1neighborEffect4-button64ca53ae44d2900neighborEffect4-button 2
NekonyancerNow we can choose which resources we want to spend to gain our opponent's bonus. Hmm... Let's go with *fruits.* *Click [red]here![/red]*2applyNeighborEffect-2-button64ca53babae1a10applyNeighborEffect-2-button 1
NekonyancerFinally, we can activate the gorilla's closed frame again, trading 2 more grains for 3 rage! [blue]I'll click on the frame for you...[/blue]1card-85-front64ca53bcc385000
NekonyancerSince, we're back up to 4 rage, let's remove another card! *Click on the [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_zZP7Ys.jpg[/img] to remove this Tamarin! Then confirm!*1card-6-front64ca53f7718eb10
NekonyancerRemoving that Tamarin gave us a 6th flower, so we have just enough to attract a Level 2 Chimpanzee! *Click [blue]here[/blue] to attract one!*1buyCard2-1-button64ca53fcc61f910buyCard2-1-button 2
NekonyancerGreat! I think you got the hang of it now. There's just one more thing I have to explain: *batteries.* In each game, [red]*three objects*[/red] from a mysterious ancient civilization will be available. Any time on your turn, you may spend batteries to activate them. Each can be activated once per round per player.1object-3-front64ca543186fcb00object-3-front 1 object-6-front 1 object-7-front 1
NekonyancerFor example, if you use two batteries on this [blue]*Boom box,*[/blue] you can immediately discard a card and draw one to replace it. [green][tip] You can hover over these objects for more information![/green]2object-3-front64ca543186fcb00object-3-front 7
Nekonyancer[red]Alright, that's it![/red] The game will continue as you've seen until one player hits *80*💡. At the end of that round, whoever has the most💡wins!3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64ca543186fcb00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for After Us!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *thoun* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64ca543186fcb00
