Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_cwVvCA.jpg[/img] There are several thousand apple varieties in the world. You are going to plant and harvest seven of them. Is your thumb green enough to be the best apple farmer around? [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerIn *Applejack,* players will take turns using honey to buy tiles from the board to add to their own orchards. These tiles have [red]*apples, beehives, and blossoms,*[/red] all of which provide opportunities to score more honey. [green]When everyone's orchards are full, whoever has the most honey wins![/green]2aj_die000
NekonyancerThis die is the [red]*Applejack.*[/red] Each turn, it will move one space around a spiral path. Each space on the path is marked with a [blue]*shape.*[/blue] According to the player information panels, we are the *triangle player,* so we'll take a turn whenever the die reaches a *triangle space!*3aj_die000mainBoard_space_2 2 mainBoard_space_3 2 mainBoard_space_4 2 mainBoard_space_5 2 mainBoard_space_6 2 mainBoard_space_7 2 mainBoard_space_8 2 mainBoard_space_9 2 mainBoard_space_10 2 mainBoard_space_11 2 mainBoard_space_12 2 mainBoard_space_13 2 mainBoard_space_14 2 aj_die 1
NekonyancerThe [red]*Applejack*[/red] just moved to one such space, so we have to take a tile now and add it to our orchard! Our choices are limited to: - The [blue]*two groups of tiles*[/blue] on either side of the Applejack's current location. - The face-down tiles in the supply.1tile_18_item64362bb858e9800aj_die 1 tile_9_item 7 tile_18_item 7 tile_40_item 7 tile_61_item 7
NekonyancerWhen we take a tile and plant it, we have to pay for it in honey! The cost is always shown on the tile's beehives. For example, [red]*these tiles*[/red] each cost 3 honey. [blue]*This one*[/blue] costs 6.2tile_9_item64362bb858e9800tile_9_item 6 tile_40_item 6 tile_61_item 7
NekonyancerWhen placing a tile, there are *no restrictions* - you can place anywhere you want - but there are several things to consider. One of the main things is the *beehives.* [green]Whenever two beehives touch, you earn the honey equal to the lower of the two beehive numbers![/green] As luck would have it, your orchard already has several beehives in it!3tile_18_item64362bb858e9800space_92143487_estate_5 14 space_92143487_estate_8 14 space_92143487_estate_11 15 space_92143487_estate_13 10 space_92143487_estate_16 9 space_92143487_estate_19 9
NekonyancerLet's try it! *1.* Select [red]*this tile.*[/red] *2.* Place it [blue]*here.*[/blue] *3.* Rotate it so the beehives touch. *4.* Click on [green]*"Confirm tile placement"*[/green] at the top! 4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64362bb858e9810space_92143487_estate_2 7 tile_61_item 6
Nekonyancer*Great!* We spent *6* honey on this tile, but we immediately got *4* back because the beehives touched. Now it's our opponent's turn...1tile_61_item64362bd1787d200
NekonyancerAlright, next I'll tell you about the second thing to consider - *apples.* Did you notice the apples on the spiral path? Whenever the Applejack passes one, it triggers a *harvest* for that color. [green]Looks like there's a brown apple harvest coming up![/green]1aj_die64362c2235ac000
NekonyancerWhen a harvest is triggered, everyone identifies all their tree tiles with at least 1 apple of the corresponding type. If two tiles are adjacent to each other, they form an *area.* An area may consist of only 1 tile. Then, players count up all the apples in each area so they can be [green]harvested (scored).[/green]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64362c2235ac000
NekonyancerFor each area, the player earns honey equal to the [green]number of apples in the area,[/green] [red]minus the value of the Applejack.[/red] Here's an example. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_kOXRmq.jpg[/img] This player has two light-green areas. They score 1 honey and 2 honey, for a total of 3.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64362c2235ac000
NekonyancerLet's get back to our turn. There's a brown apple harvest coming up, and [red]*this tile*[/red] has a brown apple! For the highest crop yield, we should place it adjacent to our other brown apple tiles. *1.* Select [red]*this tile.*[/red] *2.* Place it [blue]*here.*[/blue] *3.* Rotate it so the beehives face *north* and *south.* *4. [green]Confirm![/green]*4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64362c2235ac010tile_38_item 6 space_92143487_estate_6 7
Nekonyancer*Great!* Since our tiles were adjacent, they formed an *area* with 3 brown apples. After subtracting the Applejack's value (1), [green]we earned 2 honey![/green] I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but keep in mind that each apple type is harvested several times per game!1tile_38_item64362c4bedd8800
NekonyancerI know what you're thinking - it can be hard to check all the adjacencies in your orchard. Fortunately, BGA counts them automatically, subtracts the Applejack's value, and displays the results here, in your [red]*player information panel.*[/red] In other words, [green]it shows exactly how many points you will get from each apple during a harvest![/green]2panelItem_wrapper_9214348764362c4bedd8800overall_player_board_92143487 6
NekonyancerAlright, next turn. [red]*This tile*[/red] looks pretty good (it's cheap, we can make two beehives touch, and we can make an area of light green apples for the upcoming harvest), but right now, we're not playing to win. *We're playing to learn!* Remember that if you don't like any of the available tiles, you can draw a tile blindly from the supply! *Click on "Draw a tree tile blind" at the top!*1tile_45_item64362c7ae63a010drawBlind 16 tile_45_item 6
Nekonyancer*Yikes!* Well, it has two green apples, but 10 honey? [red]That's really steep,[/red] and we don't have a good spot for such large beehives. Luckily, though we're stuck with this tile, we don't have to plant it! We can flip it over to its *pasture* side! *1.*Click on this button [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_4cutOq.jpg[/img] to flip it! *2.* Place the tile [red]*here.*[/red] *3. [green]Confirm![/green]*1tile_84_item64362cb7ad2df10space_92143487_estate_19 6
Nekonyancer[blue]Good![/blue] Since the pasture side has no beehives, we didn't pay anything for the tile! And whenever you place a pasture, you earn [green]2 honey for free![/green] :)1tile_84_item64362cd10834b00
Nekonyancer[blue]Alright, I think you've seen enough of the gameplay![/blue] There are still a few rules to go over though. First, I'll cover *tile replenishment.* When the Applejack lands on a space and the total number of available face-up tiles at that location is 1 (or less), 1 tile will be added to every tile stack!2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64362cd10834b00
NekonyancerEventually, the Applejack will pass *the bridge and the blossom.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_he6tJ2.jpg[/img] When it does, two things happen: 1. We score blossoms. 2. The Applejack's value increases by 1. [red][tip] A higher die value means less honey from apple harvests![/red]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64362cd10834b00
NekonyancerHere's how *blossom scorings* work: Each player earns 1 honey per blossom in their orchard. They don't have to be adjacent to each other, and the Applejack's value is not subtracted. [green]Instead, the Applejack's value becomes a multiplier![/green]4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64362cd10834b00
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_pOhc9L.jpg[/img] In this example, the player has four blossoms. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_K9B4sL.jpg[/img] The Applejack's value is 2, so the player earns... [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_ImH0Zh.jpg[/img] [green]8 honey![/green]5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64362cd10834b00
NekonyancerRemember that the Applejack's value increases *AFTER* the blossom scoring. *Not before!*6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64362cd10834b00
NekonyancerThe game will continue as you've seen until everyone's boards are full. The Applejack should reach [blue]*this space*[/blue] with a value of 3. [green]Then we go to final scoring![/green]7mainBoard_space_1064362cd10834b00mainBoard_space_10 2
NekonyancerDuring final scoring, all types of apples will be harvested one last time. Remember that the Applejack's value will be set to 3 at this point. All the honey from this final apple harvest is then *doubled.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_BDv3oY.jpg[/img]8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64362cd10834b00
NekonyancerThen, players receive a *bonus for varieties.* If a player received honey from *4/5/6/7* different apple varieties in the final harvest, they receive *4/11/21/35* honey! Finally, there's one *final blossom scoring,* but with a *x1* multiplier. [green]After counting up all your honey, whoever has the most honey wins![/green]9archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64362cd10834b00
NekonyancerI know that was a lot of info. If you have any questions about final scoring, check *Page 8* of the rulebook! [blue]Don't worry, there are tons of pictures![/blue] :)10archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64362cd10834b00
Nekonyancer[blue]The last thing I have to mention is the three variants:[/blue] *1. Individual orchards:* Orchard boards are all slightly different and come with a couple apples printed on them. *2. Random apple harvest:* The first seven apple harvest markers on the Applejack's path are randomized.11archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64362cd10834b00
Nekonyancer*3. Additional tree tile:* Each player keeps one tree tile in reserve. On your turn, you can play a tile from either side of the Applejack, a tile from the reserve (blindly), OR your reserve tile. If you play your reserve tile, you must immediately replace it by choosing a tile from a trough adjacent to the die OR a random tile from the supply.12archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64362cd10834b00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Applejack!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about this tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *Sarix87* and *vurtan* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D13archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64362cd10834b00
