Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_otw9Of.jpg[/img] Outwit your rival Mastermind with the right crew and the latest gear to pull off the perfect heist! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Nekonyancer*Caper* is a 2-player game that takes place over 6 rounds across 3 locations. During a round, each Mastermind will play Thief cards at locations or Gear cards on top of thieves. After playing a card, players will exchange their hands. [green]Whoever has the most points at the end of the game wins![/green]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Nekonyancer[red]*This track*[/red] will help you keep track of the 6 rounds. The white rounds are Thief rounds. The gray ones are Gear rounds. [blue]*The dice and arrows*[/blue] show how many cards we get, as well as who plays first. UP always means YOU!3tbp-roundMarker2000tbp-roundMarker1 2 tbp-roundMarker2 2 tbp-roundMarker3 2 tbp-roundMarker4 2 tbp-roundMarker5 2 tbp-roundMarker6 2 tbp-roundTrack 1
NekonyancerAccording to the track, the first round is a *Thief* round, and each player draws 4 Thief cards. We're going first.4tbp-hand000
NekonyancerEach turn, all we have to do is select one card from our hand and play it in front of one of three [red]*locations,*[/red] which you may need to scroll down to see.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000tbp-card495 6 tbp-card92 6 tbp-card492 6
Nekonyancer*Let's try it!* *Select [blue]The Conductor.[/blue]* *Play him [red]in front of the Art Gallery.[/red]*6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment010tbp-card8 7 tbp-cardSlot-1-0-1 6
Nekonyancer*Good!* By the way, each location has room for exactly three thieves. The three thieves for each location are collectively called a [red]*crew.*[/red] [blue]Now it's our opponent's turn to play a thief from their hand![/blue]1tbp-card8639ab68b8c74200tbp-cardSlot-1-0-0 6 tbp-card8 6 tbp-cardSlot-1-0-2 6
NekonyancerOur opponent played [red]*The Tourist*[/red] on their side of the Art Gallery! Now that each player has played a card from their hands, their hands will be *exchanged!*1tbp-card15639ab6b8676f100tbp-card15 6
NekonyancerOkay! [red]Now we have what's left of our opponent's hand, and they have what's left of ours.[/red] Now we'll play another card, and so will they, and then we'll switch hands again. This will continue until both hands have only one card left. [blue]The last card in each hand will be discarded![/blue]2tbp-hand639ab6b867f9900tbp-hand 6
NekonyancerNow I'll give you more details about the cards and locations. Each location has a victory point value. [red]*The Art Gallery,*[/red] for instance is worth 5 points, plus 1 for each green gear card in your *crew* (all the thieves you assigned to that location). [green]Don't worry, we'll learn about gear soon.[/green]3tbp-card92639ab6b867f9900tbp-card92 6
NekonyancerHowever, you will only get these points if you *win* the location. Your standing in this regard is shown by the [red]*caper track*[/red] next to the location. Each caper track functions like a *tug-of-war.* At the end of the game, if the *mask token* is closer to our side than the opponent's, we'll win the location and gain points!4tbp-card92639ab6b867f9900tbp-caper1 1 tbp-card92 10
NekonyancerRight now, the mask is as close to our opponent's side as it can get. That's because they played [red]*The Tourist,*[/red] which instantly tugged it over by three spaces! [green][tip] If they tugged it toward them again, the effect would be wasted![/green]5tbp-caper1639ab6b867f9900tbp-card15 6
NekonyancerThe stars next to the extremes of the track denote *bonus points.* If the mask is still in this space at the end of the game, our opponent will score two points, in addition to the location's inherent point value.6tbp-caper1639ab6b867f9900tbp-caper1 1
NekonyancerBut don't worry. [blue]*The Conductor*[/blue] will help us catch up later when we play gear! Right now, let's get started on a different caper track!7tbp-card8639ab6b867f9900tbp-card8 7
Nekonyancer*Select [blue]The Saint![/blue]* *Play her in front of [red]The Vatican![/red]*8tbp-card13639ab6b867f9910tbp-card13 7 tbp-cardSlot-0-0-2 6
NekonyancerGreat! The Saint immediately tugged this [red]*caper track's mask*[/red] toward us by 1 space! She also gave us *3 coins,* which is indicated by the small black circle in the corner of the card!1tbp-card13639ab6d19d11800tbp-caper0 6
NekonyancerGaining coins is sometimes a little complicated. You see, there are only *ten total coins* in the game. If you are supposed to gain coins, but there are no coins in the supply, you can take them from your opponent instead. [red]However, you may only do this if your opponent has more coins than you.[/red] If the opponent does *not* have more than you, the effect of gaining coins is *wasted!*2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment639ab6d19d11800
Nekonyancer[green]Here's an example.[/green] Let's say that we had 3 coins, and our opponent had 7. We then played The Saint, drawing 3 coins. There would be no coins in the supply, so we'd take one coin from our opponent, bringing our totals to *4 and 6.* We'd then take another coin, bringing our totals to *5 and 5.* [red]We would not be able to take a third coin![/red]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment639ab6d19d11800
NekonyancerNext, take a look at [blue]*The Smuggler.*[/blue] Do you see the hexagon with a question mark inside it? This icon indicates that he can *steal a good* from the location he is assigned to.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment639ab6e47a22f00tbp-card14 7 tbp-cardSlot-1-0-0 6
NekonyancerEach location has exactly *four goods,* and they can be of three different types: *jewelry, paintings, and artifacts.* [green]At the end of the game, each player will score *2/5/9* points for having sets of *1/2/3* different stolen goods![/green]2tbp-board1-good0639ab6e47a22f00
Nekonyancer*Assign [blue]The Smuggler[/blue] to the [red]Art Gallery![/red]* He will join The Conductor's crew. *Then steal an artifact!* (The Egyptian phaeroh head.)3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment639ab6e47a22f10tbp-card14 7 tbp-cardSlot-1-0-0 6
Nekonyancer*Great!* Now it's our opponent's turn to play their last thief...1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment639ab71038bee00
Nekonyancer*Okay!* Each player has one card left in their hand, so those cards will be discarded. We'll then move on to the next phase!1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment639ab71f39eb000
Nekonyancer*Welcome to the first Gear phase!* As the [green]*phase track*[/green] indicates, each player gets [red]*6 cards*[/red] this round, and our opponent will go first!2tbp-roundMarker2639ab71f3c39400tbp-roundMarker2 1 tbp-roundTrack 3
NekonyancerThis phase works similarly to the last one in that each player will choose a card from their hand and play it. However, this time, cards must be played *on top of thieves!*3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment639ab71f3c39400
Nekonyancer[green]Each gear card has a *cost* shown in the top-left corner, a *type,* and an *effect.*[/green] For example, the [red]*Suction scalers*[/red] cost 1 coin, are classified as "Green" gear, and will let us steal a painting.1tbp-card54639ab742988c200tbp-card54 6
NekonyancerHey, one of our thieves has an affinity for green gear cards, right? *Select the [red]Suction Scalers.[/red] Then play them onto a thief with green synergy!* [tip] Remember, you can hover over cards with your mouse to see more info!2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment639ab742988c210tbp-card54 6
NekonyancerGood work! The gear card let us steal a painting. In addition, The Conductor's ability triggered, pulling the [red]*Caper track's mask*[/red] one space toward us! The card will also increase the Art Gallery's victory point value at the end of the game!1tbp-card54639ab767b517d00tbp-caper1 1
NekonyancerNext turn. Just like during the Thief Phase, we exchanged hands with our opponent after each player played a card. *Play the Skeleton Key onto The Conductor!*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment639ab77d7d8d310tbp-card71 17 tbp-card54 18
Nekonyancer*Good!* Note that the Skeleton Key is now *covering up* the Scalers that we played last turn! This is important for two reasons: *1.* Some cards provide bonuses if the top card on a thief is a certain type.1tbp-card71639ab78f3566800
Nekonyancer*2.* Some cards have a [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_rvIq4z.jpg[/img]icon that lets them *burn* one of their opponent's gear cards! When a card is burned, any effects it had are reverted! So if our Skeleton Key was burned, we would have to return a good to the Art Gallery! [red]However, covered gear cards cannot be destroyed![/red]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment639ab78f3566800
NekonyancerA couple more details to mention... First, read the [blue]*The Conductor's*[/blue] description again (see arrow). The ability says "each green card in your crew." That means we could have played the *Skeleton Key* onto *The Smuggler!* Since they're in the same crew, The Conductor's ability still would have triggered!3tbp-card8639ab78f3566800tbp-card71 15
NekonyancerAlso, these thief abilities also apply *retroactively.* That means that if we somehow get a copy of *The Conductor,* and we play it [red]*here*[/red] as the third crew member, its ability will immediately trigger for each green gear card already in the crew!4tbp-cardSlot-1-0-2-shadow639ab78f3566800tbp-cardSlot-1-0-2 6
NekonyancerFinally, if you don't like any of the gear cards in your hand, you might consider *discarding* one! Discarding a gear card instead of playing one will let you take 1 coin. [green][tip] Some cards provide extra bonuses when you discard cards![/green]5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment639ab78f3566800
NekonyancerOkay, you've seen just about everything! The game will continue for a total of six rounds. After that, all the points will be counted up!6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment639ab78f3566800
Nekonyancer[blue]You get points for:[/blue] - Winning locations. - Thief card synergies. - Gear cards. - Sets of different stolen goods. [green]Whoever has the most points is the winner![/green]8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment639ab78f3566800
Nekonyancer[blue]One last thing:[/blue] All the locations in this tutorial are in *Rome.* But you can also pull capers in *Paris, Barcelona, and London!* Each city has its own set of locations and special gear cards! These cards usually focus on a different mechanic, adding a lot of replayability!9archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment639ab78f3566800
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Caper: Europe!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *Kayvon* and *Mogri* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D10archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment639ab78f3566800
