Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed2e88b736.68529498.jpg[/img] Whether at work, in the evenings, or over the weekend, “fika” is an integral part of Swedish life and is much more than just a coffee break. It’s about making space in your daily life to chat over a hot drink as you nibble delicious pastries. [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1fika_opp_cafe_1001
NekonyancerIn *Fika,* you are a street café owner trying to outearn your competitor. You'll have to skillfully arrange the cards in your own café and manipulate those of your opponent, maximizing your points while minimizing your opponent's! Whoever has more points in each round wins the round. [green]The first player to win two rounds wins the game![/green]2fika_opp_cafe_1001
NekonyancerThe first thing we have to do each round is determine the [blue]Primary and Secondary suits.[/blue] I'll explain the mechanics behind this later. For now, just *click on the pink flower* so we can jump into the action.3fika_button_pink010
Nekonyancer[red]Good.[/red] Now our opponent will choose the secondary suit...1fika_street_164f04682393e501
Nekonyancer[green]Okay! Now we'll get to the real meat of the game.[/green] Each player was dealt a [blue]*hand of 6 cards,*[/blue] which you might have to scroll down to see. Each turn, both players will simultaneously select a card in their hand. Whoever plays the *highest* number will go first, placing the card on an empty slot in their [red]*cafe.*[/red] Afterward, they'll trigger the card's effect.1fika_street_164f046882179001fika_my_cafe 6 fika_card_3 2 fika_card_8 2 fika_card_17 2 fika_card_6 2 fika_card_9 2 fika_card_10 2
NekonyancerTheir opponent will then do the same. [blue]Here's the TLDR:[/blue] - Select cards simultaneously. - Higher card is played, triggers effect. - Lower card is played, triggers effect. [green][tip] By the way, there's a total of only 18 cards in the game: 3 suits (colors), with numbers 1-6 in each suit.[/green]2fika_street_164f046882179001
NekonyancerLet's try it! *Select this Herbal Tea!*4fika_card_864f046882179010fika_card_8 16
NekonyancerAlright. It looks like our opponent selected [red]*White Tea (3).*[/red] Since their number is higher, they'll place their card into their cafe first. 1overall_player_board_1194135464f046975304700overall_player_board_11941354 6
NekonyancerOur turn to place our card! *1.* Place it in the middle of our cafe. *2.* Click on *"Confirm Position"* at the top. *3.* Click on *"Continue"* in the corner of this box.1fika_my_cafe_364f046a3dc01a00
NekonyancerNow we have to trigger the card's *effect.* Herbal Tea's effect allows us to switch one of our played cards (including itself) with whatever card is directly across from it. [blue]If we want, we can skip the effect, but where's the fun in that?[/blue] *1.* Select our *Herbal Tea* again. *2. Confirm!*2fika_card_864f046a3dc01a10
Nekonyancer[red]Great![/red] Our Herbal Tea was switched with our opponent's White Tea! That was one complete turn, with both players selecting and playing one card. Note that the cards we played now have [green]green numbers[/green] on them.1fika_street_164f046fe4cff701fika_card_17 16
NekonyancerThe green numbers show how many *coins* a card will earn at the end of the round. To earn coins from a card, we have to satisfy the card's *objective.* If you hover over White Tea, you'll see that it only earns coins if there is a [red]*Group*[/red] in front of it.2fika_card_1564f046fe4cff700
NekonyancerAt the beginning of the round, [red]*two cards*[/red] were set off to the side, face-down. These are the group cards. I'll explain more about groups soon. Right now, it's time to select our next card. Hmm... [blue]do you see a card in our hand that will help us complete White Tea's objective?[/blue]3fika_group_card_264f046fe4cff700fika_group_card_1 6 fika_group_card_2 6
NekonyancerThe [blue]Macchiato[/blue] will! *Select it!*4fika_card_1764f046fe4cff710fika_card_17 16
NekonyancerThis time our card has the higher number, so we'll play our card first. *1.* Select the *5th slot* of our cafe, all the way to the right! *2. Confirm.* *3. Continue.*1fika_my_cafe_564f0472967f6100
NekonyancerNow for the effect. Macchiato allows us to move one Group card onto the street. *1.* Select the [red]*top*[/red] group. *2.* Move it to the *middle* of the street, next to our tea. *3. Confirm!*2fika_card_464f0472967f6111fika_street 7 fika_group_card_1 6
NekonyancerGood. Each group has a *3-cup side* and a *2-cup side.* When a group is moved, the 3-cup side will always face the player who moved it. So what do these groups do anyway? [blue]They *multiply* the coins of cards next to them - one by 3, and one by 2![/blue]1fika_street_164f0474302a0e01
NekonyancerThe group's 3-cup side is pointing to our White Tea, multiplying its score by *3.* The group's presence also complete's White Tea's objective, making it worth 7 coins. [green]If nothing goes wrong, this card is set to earn 21 coins at the end of the round![/green]2fika_card_1564f0474302a0e00
NekonyancerAaand something went wrong! Our opponent's [red]*kanelbullar*[/red] (Swedish cinnamon bun) allowed them to swap our White Tea with a card from the [blue]*supply!*[/blue]1fika_card_764f04782b978d00fika_card_16 7 fika_card_15 7 fika_card_4 7 fika_card_18 7 fika_card_7 6
NekonyancerDon't worry, we can fix this! *Select Coffee with Milk!*2fika_card_1064f04782b978d10fika_card_10 16
NekonyancerOur [red]*opponent's card*[/red] is higher, so they'll go first...1overall_player_board_1194135464f0479a5d43a00overall_player_board_11941354 6
NekonyancerOkay, our turn. Hmm.. Think about the cards we've already played. [blue]Where should we place our Coffee with Milk?[/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64f047a7cfcc700
NekonyancerOur Macchiato will earn coins if we have 3 consecutively numbered cards in our cafe. Coffee with Milk will help with that! *1.* Select the *4th* slot, next to our Macchiato. *2. Confirm.* *3. Continue.*2fika_my_cafe_464f047a7cfcc700
NekonyancerCoffee with Milk allows us to swap cards in our cafe with cards in our hand. It can't swap itself though. *1.* Select the *Green Tea* in the 3rd slot of our cafe. *2.* Click on *"Skip."* (We only want to swap one card.) *3.* Select the *Ginger Tea* in our hand. *4.* Click on *"Skip"* again. (We only want to put one card down.) *5. Confirm!*3fika_card_264f047a7cfcc710
Nekonyancer[blue]Great! We fixed the damage our opponent inflicted last turn![/blue] Not only that, we created a sequence of 3 consecutively numbered cards, so our [red]*Macchiato*[/red] is set to earn coins as well!1fika_card_1064f047c33511300fika_card_17 6
Nekonyancer*Next, let's play this Peppermint Tea.*3fika_card_364f047c33511310fika_card_3 16
NekonyancerOur opponent just moved the [red]*second group.*[/red] That's perfect for us. *1.* Play the Peppermint Tea in the *1st slot,* next to the new group. *2. Confirm.* *3. Continue.*1fika_num_10_064f047fbd2e0401fika_group_card_2 6
Nekonyancer[blue]Now for the effect.[/blue] I mentioned earlier that the two group cards are actually just normal cards that are placed face-down. Peppermint Tea (along with other teas with the number 3) allows us to pick up a group and then set a card down from our hand to *replace* it. *1.* Select the group on the *left.* *2. Confirm.*2fika_card_1064f047fbd2e0411fika_group_card_2 16
NekonyancerHmm. It turned out to be a Vaniljbullar (Swedish Vanilla Bun). Okay. *1.* Select the *Prinsesstarta* as its replacement! *2. Confirm!* I think you got an error, didn't you? Okay... Click on "Continue" instead.3fika_card_1364f048139207d00fika_card_6 16
NekonyancerLast turn! *Select the Green Tea!*1fika_card_264f0481ad1a4910
NekonyancerLast turn of the round! *Select the Green Tea!*2fika_card_264f0481ad1a4910fika_card_2 16
NekonyancerHmm, both we and our opponent selected a Tea (2). This is when the *Primary* and *Secondary* suits come into play! When the selected cards have the same number, the order is determined by their *suits* (colors).1overall_player_board_1194135464f048307e29000
NekonyancerEarlier, we selected Pink as the primary suit, and our opponent selected Green as the secondary suit, making Brown the tertiary suit by default. All that is shown [red]*here.*[/red]2fika_suits64f048307e29000fika_suits 6
NekonyancerWe selected a brown card, and our opponent selected a green card. [red]That means our opponent will play their card first![/red]3overall_player_board_1194135464f048307e29000
NekonyancerOuch! They switched our tea (3) again. In addition to depriving us of its points, they also ruined our Macchiato! [green]Luckily, we can switch it right back![/green] *1.* Place our card in the *2nd* slot. *2. Confirm.* *3. Continue.*1fika_my_cafe_264f0483baa3d200
NekonyancerWha? What's this at the top? [red]"Opponent's cafe is at 5 cards; cannot swap..."[/red] Omg! I forgot about this critical rule! [red]When a cafe has no open slots, their opponent can no longer interfere with them![/red] If only we had gone first this turn! 😭2pagemaintitletext64f0483baa3d200
NekonyancerNothing we can do about it now. *Click on Skip Effect.*3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64f0483baa3d210
NekonyancerBoth cafes are full, so that's the end of the round. Looks like we are tied at 14 coins each! In the event of a tie, whoever has the highest card of the primary suit (Pink) wins the round. Our highest pink card is [red]*Coffee with Milk (4).*[/red] Our opponent's is [blue]*Cappuccino (5)...*[/blue] shoot. We lost.1fika_card_1064f0485a2fbe900fika_card_11 7 fika_card_10 6
Nekonyancer[blue]Time for Round 2![/blue] But I think we'll end the tutorial here. [green]The game will continue as you've seen until one player wins 2 rounds![/green]2player_table_status_1194135464f0485a3428200
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Fika!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *Fletcheese* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D3fika_street_264f0485a3428201
