Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_bP5IkF.jpg[/img] Life is bustling in the local forest: Animals scurry around the clearings looking for edible plants and insects. Some enjoy the dense treetops, while others prefer the lush undergrowth and only feel comfortable in the shelter of the trees. [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerIn *Forest Shuffle,* each player will create an ecologically balanced habitat for flora and fauna. Each tree you play provides homes for plants, animals, and mushrooms. To score points, you will need to honor the preferences of each species, like being near certain other species. Once winter sets in, [green]whoever has the most points wins![/green]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerEach player starts with six cards in their hand. As you can see, some cards feature [red]*trees,*[/red] and others feature [blue]*animals.*[/blue] If you have *no trees* in your starting hand, you may take a *mulligan.* That means you discard your whole hand and draw a new one. This may only be done *once!*3hint1_card_55000hint1_card_16 1 hint1_card_36 1 hint1_card_55 1 hint1_card_58 1 hint1_card_71 2 hint2_card_71 2 hint1_card_152 2 hint2_card_152 2
Nekonyancer[blue]On your turn, you may perform *one* of the following actions:[/blue] *- Draw 2 cards.* *- Play a card and check the clearing.* [red]We'll start by playing a card![/red]4hint1_card_55000
NekonyancerWhen you play a card, you must pay for it by *discarding* other cards. The number of cards needed is shown in the *top-left corner* of each card. For example, we'll have to discard 2 other cards to play the [red]*Douglas Fir,*[/red] but only 1 to play the [blue]*Beech.*[/blue]5hint1_card_55000hint1_card_36 2 hint1_card_55 1
NekonyancerEach tree grants special effects when played. If you hover over one, you can read the details. For example, the [red]*Oak*[/red] grants an extra turn when played! Hmm, that sounds pretty strong to me. Let's play it! *1. Select the [red]Oak[/red] tree.* *2. Select [blue]these two cards[/blue] to discard.* *3. Click on "Play Card" at the top.*6hint1_card_16010hint1_card_16 1 hint1_card_55 2 hint1_card_58 2
Nekonyancer*Great!* Whenever cards are discarded, they are placed face-up on the table. This area is called [blue]*The Clearing.*[/blue] Whenever a tree is played, an [red]*extra card*[/red] is added to the clearing. This is because trees attract more species and increase diversity! :)1hint1_card_5864dfd5a16e93e00hint1_card_56 1 clearing 2
NekonyancerWe added three cards to the Clearing in just one turn! It seems like it will get crowded fast, doesn't it? But look at the bottom-right corner of the Clearing. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_rNwhJY.jpg[/img] This graphic indicates that the Clearing will be cleared if there are *10 or more cards* in it at the end of a player's turn. [red]The Clearing will be cleared... am I funny? Don't answer that. I know I'm funny.[/red]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64dfd5a16e93e00
NekonyancerNow we can take our second turn... wait. It's [blue]*Nekonyancer's*[/blue] turn now? What happened? Oh... It's because the Oak tree's effect is actually a *bonus!* Bonuses will only trigger if the cards used to pay for them are the *same color and symbol* as the played card! This is indicated by the binoculars in the bottom-left corner of the card: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_AnSecF.jpg[/img]3hint1_card_1664dfd5a16e93e00
NekonyancerMany cards in Forest Shuffle are *split.* When you discard a split card, only *one* species on the discarded card needs to be the same color as the played card. For example, [red]*this card*[/red] could have contributed toward the Oak tree's bonus because the European Hare is the same color/symbol as the Oak.4hint1_card_7164dfd5a16e93e00hint1_card_71 1 hint2_card_71 1
NekonyancerIf you're not sure if two cards are the same color, just check the *top-right corners* of the cards. For example, the Oak tree and European Hare both feature this color/symbol: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_EKje6D.jpg[/img]5hint1_card_7164dfd5a16e93e00
NekonyancerOkay, next turn! Let's learn about playing *split cards.* When you play a split card, it must be *partially tucked* under a tree so that only one of its two species is showing.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64dfd622e461000
NekonyancerFor example, we can play the [red]*Eurasian Jay*[/red] by tucking the [blue]*Tree Ferns*[/blue] under a tree. The Jay would then stick out at the top. Similarly, if we wanted to play the Ferns, we would tuck the Jay under the tree. The Ferns would then stick out at the bottom.2hint1_card_15264dfd622e461000hint1_card_152 1 hint2_card_152 2
NekonyancerLet's try it! *1. Select the Jay/Ferns.* As you can see, two faded images appeared, showing that we can play the card as the Jay above the tree or the Ferns under it. *Continue to the next text box.*3hint1_card_15264dfd622e461000
NekonyancerLet's play the card as the Jay. *1. Click on the area above the tree.* *2. Select [blue]this card[/blue] as payment.* *3. Click on "Play Card" at the top!*4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64dfd622e461010hint1_card_36 2
Nekonyancer*Excellent!* The Jay gave us another turn! The card we discarded didn't match the Jay's color, but that doesn't matter because it was an *effect,* not a *bonus.* [blue]If you hover over the Jay, you'll see that it's even labeled as such.[/blue]1hint1_card_15264dfd67ed8f9d00
NekonyancerFor our second turn, let's play the [red]*European Hare.*[/red] *Click on the card, then the area to the left of our tree, then on "Play Card."*2hint1_card_7164dfd67ed8f9d10hint1_card_71 1
NekonyancerGood job. The Hare is special in that other Hares can share the same location. Common Toads are similar. [red]In all other cases, only one card can be placed on each side of a tree![/red]1hint1_card_7164dfd686874a400
NekonyancerAlso, note that both of the animal cards we played had *instant* effects. Mushroom cards offer *permanent* effects, like "Draw 1 card whenever you play a card under a tree." [blue]Keep an eye out for them when you play![/blue]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64dfd686874a400
NekonyancerLooks like our hand is empty now. Let's spend our next turn by *taking 2 cards.* Cards can be taken from the clearing or the top of the deck. *Click on [red]this card.[/red] Then click on "Take Card" at the top!*1hint2_card_12764dfd6d8f00a410hint1_card_127 1 hint2_card_127 1
NekonyancerLet's draw the second card from the [red]*top of the deck.*[/red] You don't need me to spell out every click for you, do you? *Go ahead!*1deck64dfd744cf90710deck 1
NekonyancerAlright, there's just one last thing to show you: [green]tree saplings.[/green] Any card can be played as a sapling. Saplings have no colors, effects or bonuses, but they're free and always available. They also have a Tree symbol. *Play this card as a tree sapling!*1hint1_card_10164dfd75a6839810
NekonyancerOkay, I think you've seen enough! Now I'll explain how the game ends. One [blue]*winter card*[/blue] was placed on top of the bottom third of the [red]*draw deck.*[/red] Two more winter cards were shuffled into that bottom third. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_1ce9kr.jpg[/img] Whenever a winter card is drawn, it is immediately discarded, and the player draws another card to replace it. When the third winter card is drawn, the game *immediately* ends!1deck64dfd76db1f6f00deck 1
NekonyancerEach player then counts up all the points on each card they've played. You may also have some cards in a special area called your *cave.* Some animal cards will allow you to set cards aside in your cave. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_pY87ne.jpg[/img] Each card in the cave is worth one point. [green]Whoever has the most points wins![/green]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64dfd76db1f6f00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Forest Shuffle!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *firgon* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64dfd76db1f6f00
