ClutronWelcome to the tutorial for *Gin Rummy*, a two player card game that has been played for over a century! The goal of the game is to reach a certain point value, in this case 100 points, by creating runs and sets of cards in your hand. Let's go to the table and see how to play.1myhand_wrap001
ClutronFirst thing to notice is your hand of cards. You are dealt 10 cards and you will always have 10 cards in hand. The automatic sort will always arrange your cards with complete sets/runs to the left, and everything else to the right. You can uncheck the box to allow you to drag and drop your cards into any order you want, but for now we will leave it on.2myhand_wrap000myhand 1
ClutronNext thing we need to know about our hand is the *deadwood value*, ours is currently 65. This value becomes important in scoring because the points you get are based on the difference between your own deadwood value and your opponent's. Your deadwood value is the total face value of all cards NOT in valid sets or runs with aces being 1, and face cards being 10.4deadwood_counter000
ClutronYou might be asking now, what is a run or a set. A *[red]run[/red]* is a sequence of numbers of the same suit, so a 7,8,9 of clubs would be a run. But a 7 of hearts, 8 of diamonds, 9 of hearts would NOT. A *set* is a group of cards of the same number, regardless of suit. Sets and runs must contain at least 3 cards in them to be valid.5myhand_wrap001
ClutronLet's go ahead and play our first turn. On your turn you will do two things, draw a card from the top of the deck or the discard, and then discard a card. We have two 9s already in our hand, so lets grab the [red]9[/red] on the discard to complete a set!6card_20010card_discard_40 16 card_20 1 card_43 1
ClutronNice, our set of 9s moved to the left to indicate it's valid. Also their value has been removed from our Deadwood value dropping it down to 47. Now we need to discard a card. The *Ace of spades* is not really useful to us right now, so click that one to discard it.1card_4365022049a56cb10card_20 3 card_43 3 card_40 3 card_31 16
ClutronDecisions, decisions. I know we just made our set of 9s, but I think we can better advance our hand with runs since we have 7 and 9 of diamonds, and the 6, 8, 9 of spades. Take the [red]8 of diamonds[/red] from the discard to create a run.1card_1965022133a805110card_discard_45 16
ClutronNotice the 7 and 8 didn't move, and our deadwood value went up. That is because each card can only be used in one set, or one run. So if we use the 9 of diamonds in the run, it can't be used in the set of 9s. But since we are going with runs, lets discard the [red]9 of hearts[/red] since we don't have any other cards to make a run with it.1card_456502243928afc10card_43 16 card_40 2 card_35 2 card_45 2
ClutronPERFECT! Grab that *7 of spades* to complete our spades run!1card_3465022466eaa1e10card_discard_38 16
ClutronNOTE: I turned off auto sort in the game so cards will no longer automatically rearrange themselves even though it remains checked in the tutorial. If you turn off auto-sort in your own game, you can re-arrange the cards simply by dragging them around in your hand. This can help you organize things more to your liking as opposed to letting the system do it for you.1myhand_wrap65022473dab1201
ClutronWe are doing good, we have a run with both diamonds and spades, so let's start getting rid of higher value cards. Click on the [red]King of Hearts[/red] to discard him.2card_1065022473dab1210card_10 1
ClutronThat discarded card is no good to us, click the deck to draw one off the top.1card_34650224b97fa8310deck_card 16
ClutronThat card is no good, throw it back!1card_50650224bdcf84e10card_50 1
ClutronIf we had held onto the king from before that would be an excellent card to grab, but not anymore. Pull another from the deck.1card_34650224ce1ddb110deck_card 16
ClutronOkay, it doesn't help us in making any sets or runs, but it is a nice low value card.1card_9650224d83d4c900card_9 2
ClutronNotice now there is an extra option at the top, "Discard and knock". This option appeared because it is possible to discard a card and have a deadwood value of 10 or below, when that occurs you can do a knock. When you knock you will end the hand and compare deadwood values, if yours is lower then you get to score the difference. Select the [red]Queen[/red] and then *Discard and knock*2card_35650224d83d4c910btnKnockEnd 18 card_29 17
ClutronExcellent, they had a deadwood value of 20, and we had a value of 6. That means we score 14 points for the hand! But there is one more thing to consider when knocking, and that's if your opponent can "lay-off" cards from their hand.1close_btn650224e5b323000
ClutronWhen a hand ends by knocking, if you have cards left in your hand that you can be added to your opponent's melds, you can "lay them off". This is important because it will reduce your deadwood value before scoring. Here is an example of scoring with a lay off. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed32e9c379.28998613.jpg[/img] Click continue and then close this summary.2popin_tableWindow_contents650224e5b323001
ClutronNow a new hand has started. At the start of a hand, the person who lost the last hand has the option to take the top of the discard pile to start. If they do then they complete their turn and play continues as normal. If they pass then the other player gets offered the same option. If they also pass then it comes back to the first and they start by drawing a card from the deck.3card_22650224e5b323000
ClutronOver here in our HUD you will see our 14 points has been recorded, as well as the fact we won a hand (the number under the trophy). The number of hands we win is important because we will earn bonus points at the end of the game equal to the line bonus times the numbers of hands we won. The line bonus can be seen next to the discard pile.1player_board_88393020650225051969d00variant_wrap 3
ClutronI am going to skip ahead to the end of this hand to show you another scoring scenario.2card_45650225051969d01
ClutronNotice I could have knocked right here since my deadwood value would be 1, but I was trying for more points with Gin, which is when your deadwood value would be 0.1card_246503099c6390600
ClutronWe never made it to Gin since my opponent knocked. But look, we still got the points! This was because our deadwood value was equal to or lower than his when he knocked. So instead of him getting the points, we got them. We also got a bonus 10 points for undercutting him!1popin_tableWindow65030a259ceed00
ClutronHere you can see what the undercut bonus is.2variant_wrap65030a44e3b6500variant_wrap 3
ClutronThe last possible way to score is by calling *Gin*. This works the same way as knocking, but the deadwood value in your hand after discarding must be 0. When that happens you score 25 points plus the deadwood value of your opponent. Here is an example of that scoring: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed325fc9a8.54089410.jpg[/img]3myhand_wrap65030a44e3b6500card_27 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWQzMjg1MWRjNy42MzA1OTk2Ny5qcGc=/42/0
ClutronAnd finally I mentioned the line bonus being added at the end of the game. Here is an example: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed32a3d6c4.92731975.jpg[/img] The final scores were 85 to 104, the winning player got a bonus of 100 points for winning the game, and 125 points for the line bonus by winning 5 hands. The other player still gets the line bonus of 75 for winning 3 hands even though they lost.4myhand_wrap65030a44e3b6501card_27 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWQzMmNmNWU5Ni4zMjI3NzU2OS5qcGc=/42/0
ClutronAnd that's the game! Different options can be set when creating a table to change bonus values or to do match play where you play 100 point matches until someone gets to 500 points in total to win the game. Feel free to check the game page on BGA for more information, and have fun playing!5myhand_wrap65030a44e3b6501
