NekonyancerWelcome to *Koi-Koi,* one of the most popular *Hanafuda* games in Japan! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Nekonyancer*Hanafuda* are traditional Japanese cards. They can be compared to the standard cards used in Western cultures. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed02105436.22729450.jpg[/img] However, instead of having 4 suits of 13 cards each, Hanafuda have *12 suits* of *4 cards* each.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerEach suit features a different plant and is associated with a different month of the year. For example, [red]*this card*[/red] features *wisteria,* representing the month of *April.* You can see any card's month by hovering over it with your mouse! [green][tip] For more information, click on the Month List at the top![/green]3player_hand_item_47000btnMonthList 8 player_hand_item_47 1
NekonyancerIn addition to suits, each card belongs to a different [blue]type,[/blue] of which there are four: *Bright:* Often has fancy artwork. *Ribbon:* Features a ribbon. *Animal:* Features animals, including insects. *Chaff:* Features only the month's plant.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerNow that you know about the cards, let's learn how to play! Our objective is to match cards in your hand with cards in the discard area, eventually forming sets called *yaku!* When one player has a yaku, they can either call stop and immediately cash in on points, or gamble for more by calling "Koi-Koi!" [green]After six months (rounds), whoever has the most points is the winner![/green]5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerIt's our turn first. We need to find a card in [red]*our hand*[/red] that matches a card in [blue]*the discard area.*[/blue] For a card to match, it must be from the *same month.* You can check what month a card is from by hovering over it with your mouse, but there's an easier way to see if anything matches.6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000faceup_cards_item_7 2 faceup_cards_item_8 2 faceup_cards_item_14 2 faceup_cards_item_16 2 faceup_cards_item_18 2 faceup_cards_item_20 2 faceup_cards_item_36 2 faceup_cards_item_45 2 player_hand_item_4 1 player_hand_item_5 1 player_hand_item_6 1 player_hand_item_12 1 player_hand_item_21 1 player_hand_item_28 1 player_hand_item_44 1 player_hand_item_47 1
Nekonyancer*First, click on this card. Then click on "Continue."*7player_hand_item_6000player_hand_item_6 16
NekonyancerAny cards that *don't* match should now be faded! This Ribbon card is the only match - the only card from the same month as the card we selected! *Click on it!*8faceup_cards_item_16010faceup_cards_item_16 16
Nekonyancer*Great!* Both cards went into our [red]*inventory,*[/red] where they were automatically sorted by *type.*1mycardswon_wrap640e781911fba00player_20s 1 player_10s 1 player_5s 1 player_1s 1
NekonyancerAfter matching a card from your hand, you must draw a [red]*card from the deck*[/red] and match it too! [blue]Hmm... looks like nothing matches...[/blue] :(2drawn_item_41640e781911fba00drawn_item_41 1
NekonyancerIf nothing matches, we have no choice but to discard the card! *Click here to discard it!*3faceup_cards_item_1000640e781911fba10faceup_cards_item_1000 16
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, that was one complete turn![/blue] Now it's our opponent's turn.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment640e78208ae6d00
NekonyancerAlright, it's our turn again. *Click on this card. Then click on "continue!"*1player_hand_item_21640e78282ce6f00player_hand_item_21 16
Nekonyancer[red]Oops, looks like nothing matches this card![/red] Since nothing matches, the game gives us the option of [red]*discarding*[/red] the card. We shouldn't do this unless we have to though!2player_hand_item_21640e78282ce6f00faceup_cards_item_1000 6
NekonyancerLet's try *this card* instead. Is there a match? *Go ahead and take it!*3player_hand_item_5640e78282ce6f10player_hand_item_5 16
Nekonyancer*Great!* And just like last turn, after matching/discarding a card from our hand, we drew a card from the deck. Ooh, we got a match! *Click on it!*1faceup_cards_item_20640e78312e92c10faceup_cards_item_20 16
Nekonyancer[blue]Great![/blue] The round will keep going as you've seen until someone acquires a specific combination of cards, called a *"yaku."* [green][tip] If you want to see what kinds of yaku are available, click on the *yaku list* at the top![/green] I'll skip forward a little bit now...1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment640e78361118a00btnYakuList 8
NekonyancerOkay. *Go ahead and match this card...*1player_hand_item_28640e785d48b4210player_hand_item_28 16
Nekonyancer*... and discard the card we drew from the deck.*1faceup_cards_item_1000640e78648c72a10faceup_cards_item_1000 16
Nekonyancer*Whoa!* We formed a yaku of *three bright cards!* Now we have a choice - we can either *Stop* (and score) or call *"Koi-koi!"* (risk it!) *Stop* will immediately end the round. We'll score 6 points. No one else will score anything.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment640e786b2c19f00
NekonyancerCalling Koi-koi is when things get [red]exciting![/red] You see, there's a [red]*score multiplier*[/red] in this game! It always starts at x1, plus 1 for each *bright card* on the field at the beginning of the round. [blue]Calling Koi-Koi will increase it by 1 for that player![/blue]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment640e786b2c19f00
NekonyancerThat means we should only call Koi-Koi if we think we can get a *second* yaku before our opponent gets their *first!* This is easier than you might think because each card (except bright cards) can be a part of *multiple* yaku!4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment640e786b2c19f00
NekonyancerLet's play it safe for now. *Click on "Stop (and score)."*5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment640e786b2c19f10
Nekonyancer[red]*Great!*[/red] We stole 6 points (the value of our yaku) from our opponent! I'll fast-forward through most of the second round now...1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment640e787edeed100
NekonyancerUh-oh, [green]*Nekonekoneko3*[/green] got a yaku! It's a weak one though... just one point! [blue]Let's see if they *stop* or call *Koi-Koi*...[/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment640e79023ccdf00
NekonyancerThey called *Koi-Koi,* increasing their score multiplier from x1 to x2! If they get a second yaku before we get our first, they'll score *double!* [red]The pressure's on now![/red]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment640e790c4358800
Nekonyancer*What?!* They got a second yaku *already?!*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment640e791cc991d00
NekonyancerAnd they called "Koi-Koi" AGAIN, increasing their multiplier to *x3!!* [green]There is no limit to how high the multiplier can get. [/green] We *really* have to get a yaku, *fast!*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment640e7927c304a00
Nekonyancer[red]Unbelievable![/red] They got a *third yaku* and called stop, scoring 16 points. Those 16 points were then multiplied by 3, so they stole a total of *48* points from us!! :(1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment640e79358ca1200
Nekonyancer*Okay, that's everything!* The game will continue as you've seen for a pre-set number of rounds (6 by default). [green]After that, whoever has the most points wins![/green] However, if anyone's score drops to 0 or below, the game will instantly end, and [green]whoever has the most points at that time wins![/green] There are just a few final details I have to mention...2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment640e79358ca1200
Nekonyancer- If both players run out of cards without scoring any yaku, the round will simply end in a *draw.* - If you are dealt either four cards from one month or four different month-pairs, you'll instantly win the round. These are called *hand yaku.* [green][tip] This info can be found in the "hand yaku" tab of the yaku list![/green] - There are many *customizable options* in the game lobby. Each one has a caption explaining what it does. Be sure to peruse through them before you start a game!3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment640e79358ca1200
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Koi-Koi!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about this tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *BrianHanechak, Een,* and *ufm* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment640e79358ca1200
