JagzeAfter years of filling the seas with islands and eliminating sea monsters, we took a rest and we noticed something on the island! A pyramid! Wait, no. A mountain! Climbing this mountain requires bravery as many dangers lies ahead! Welcome to [blue]*Tranquility: Ascent*[/blue], a standalone sequel of Tranquility...1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Jagze[blue]*Tranquility: The Ascent*[/blue] is a cooperative game for 1-5 players whose goal is to *complete* the mountain-shaped grid of 44 cards before topping it with a single Summit card. BUT if a player is unable to do any legal actions (play or discard) on their turn, everyone loses! [green][tip] If you played the original Tranquility, you will find some similar mechanics.[/green]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
JagzeBefore we start, it is important to know which kind of cards are in play, as any other card games. 3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
JagzeThere are total of 85 cards in each game, namely: > *72 Ascent Cards* (numbered 1 to 12 in three different colors with two of each number/color, eg. [green]two Green 12s[/green], [blue]two Blue 12s[/blue] and [red]two Red 12s[/red]) > *3 Campfire Cards* (one of each color) > *5 Bridge Cards* > *5 Summit Cards* Even though some of the cards look like yellowish, the rulebook says it's green.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
JagzeThere are also 10 [blue]Panorama[/blue] cards which serve as the base of the mountain, and also we have *8 rows* of cards to be filled before we finish the game with a Summit card.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000panorama_0 7 panorama_1 7 panorama_2 7 panorama_3 7 panorama_4 7 panorama_5 7 panorama_6 7 panorama_7 7 panorama_8 7 panorama_9 7
JagzeThe first player starts by putting any ascent card on the lower left of our board, on the first row. In this case, Romain put a blue 3 on the board.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6384932305c0c00space_1_1 8
JagzeJust like the original Tranquility, on your turn, you must either: 1. *Play a card*, or 2. *Discard two cards.* Simple enough, right? But there are restrictions when playing a card. We will discuss those later.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6384932305c0c00
JagzeYou have been given a [blue]bridge card[/blue] directly in your hand as a compensation for being the second player to play in this game. We will talk about that card later in the game. [green]In higher number of players, only the second and the fourth player are given the Bridge Card directly in their hand as part of setup.[/green]3card_116384932305c0c00card_11 7
JagzeIt is your turn! Apparently, putting a card on this location is the only legal move aside from discarding two cards. You can only play a card adjacent to the existing card, as long as it has a different color than the adjacent card on the same row (eg. you cannot place 4 blue beside 3 blue), or on the row above it (which we will discuss later).4space_1_26384932305c0c00space_1_2 6
JagzeTry putting the 3 on the highlighted location! (Scroll down to see your hand) [green][tip] You will see a checkmark as you place the 3 on the highlighted location. That means it's a legal move, AND you won't have to discard another card when playing![/green]5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6384932305c0c10space_1_2 7 card_41 17
JagzeYou will draw up to the hand limit of 5 cards in your hand after your turn, as long as the draw pile has enough cards! Oh, by the way each player has a draw pile! If you see our player panel, we can see that we have 37 cards left in draw pile (deck) and 5 cards in hand! 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6384932e9e4fd00a846f20b-d76f-47a5-854a-84d45554ff2e 2 12e6a8c0-442d-467f-83fa-700a70d928ce 3
JagzeRomain decided to discard 2 cards and pass the turn, which is not great for now. It is our turn again, and we will discuss playing a card on the other rows! [green]You can play any ascent card on the left side of a new row, following the rules:[/green] > You can play a card equal or greater than the number of that row. For example, you can play 2-12 on 2nd row, but not number 1.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6384933e6daf400
JagzeLet's play our number 10 on the 2nd row! 1. Click on 10 2. Click on highlighted location, then "Play Card"2space_2_16384933e6daf410space_2_1 7 card_39 7
JagzeLet's try placing 11 on this spot! Oh wait, we need to discard a card before we place it. > We discard cards equal to the number of the difference. So in this case, we will discard 1 card to play 11. 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment63849371d71a600space_2_2 6 card_27 6
JagzePlay our 11 and discard 6! 11 is different color than 10 so it is allowed. And playing on higher row must have two cards below to support it! *First, click on 11, click on highlighted location and then click 6 (number to be discarded)* [green] As you can see, there is a trash can that indicates the number of cards to be discarded! [/green]2space_2_263849371d71a610space_2_2 18 card_47 19 card_27 17
JagzeRemember the Bridge card that we have been dealt at the start? Now I will play it for us. Bridge cards allow a temporary expansion to a mountain row, but must be covered in order to be able to win. It is possible to place an ascent card later between two cards, but you must discard cards with highest difference. More on this later! !!! Bridge cards CANNOT be played at end of each row1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment638493a3f1d4100
JagzeAnd lastly, the Campfire Card. It allows you to relocate existing Ascent Cards further up the mountain. > They can only replace Ascent cards of the same color, not bridge cards. > The replaced card MUST be moved up the mountain to a new location and follow the usual placement rules.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment638493af1a9d300
JagzeWhen you fill up the last row, you can finally play the Summit Card! There are 5 of them distributed among the players, and you only need one! 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment638493af1a9d300
JagzeBefore I finish the tutorial, there are some variants and options I need to discuss: *Green path* - You must create a path from 1st to 8th row consisting of only green cards. *Panorama* - 3 to 5 Panorama cards have patterns that you need to complete. *Goat cards* - Some cards have goats on it. You need to escort the goat to the summit in order to win. 3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment638493af1a9d300
Jagze*Row starting location* - By default, we start at the left end. This option enables you to choose where to start. And lastly, if you are playing in solo mode, your hand limit is 6, and you have given 3 *Guide Ropes.* It allows you to "mulligan" your cards - shuffle in your entire hand to the draw pile and then refill your hand. I recommend to hover over the tooltips! Most of it will answer your questions.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment638493af1a9d300
JagzeThat covers the tutorial for [blue]*Tranquility: The Ascent*[/blue]! It might be not perfect but I hope you know the basics of the game. Special thanks is given to ufm, who developed this amazing game on BGA! If you have questions, feel free to ask him. 5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment638493af1a9d300
