Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_8ny2L4.jpg[/img] In *War Chest,* you take on the role of medieval battle commanders, vying to gain control of [blue]*tactical battlefield locations!*[/blue] The first player to control six locations will win the game! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000square_3_9 7 square_4_6 7 square_5_9 7 square_7_7 7 square_8_10 7 square_9_7 7
NekonyancerYou and your opponent have each been assigned [red]*four different types of troops.*[/red] Each type has its own stack of tokens.2lancer_unit_1000000cavalry_unit_800 6 archer_unit_900 6 lancer_unit_1000 6 scout_unit_1100 6
NekonyancerAt the beginning of the game, 2 tokens from each stack were put into [red]*your personal bag,*[/red] along with a Royal Coin, which we'll see later, bringing the *total number* of your tokens in your bag to *9.* It says 6 right now because we drew [blue]*three coins,*[/blue] which you will do at the start of every turn.3ba_board_92143487000cavalry_unit_500 7 lancer_unit_600 7 scout_unit_700 7 bag_icon_92143487 6
NekonyancerAs you can see, we've drawn [blue]*a scout, a lancer, and a cavalry unit.*[/blue] That means we have 1 scout, 1 lancer, 1 cavalry, and 2 archers still in the bag, which you can see in your [red]*personal information box.*[/red] [green][tip] Keeping track of the troops in your bag is key to victory![/green]4lancer_unit_600000cavalry_unit_500 2 lancer_unit_600 2 scout_unit_700 2 ha_board_92143487 6
NekonyancerA game of War Chest is divided into a series of rounds. [blue]Each round consists of:[/blue] *- Drawing 3 coins,* as I mentioned before. *- Playing 3 coins,* 1 at a time.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerCoins can be played to perform 3 different types of actions: *- Placement.* *- Discard face-down.* *- Discard face-up.* [green]Let's learn about Placement actions first![/green]6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerThe main placement action is called *deploy.* This involves placing a token from your hand onto an empty [blue]*controlled location.*[/blue] [red]You may only have one deployed unit of each type on the field![/red] Our opponent will deploy a unit now. Hit continue, and watch!7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000square_5_3 7 square_8_4 7
NekonyancerThey deployed a light cavalry onto one of their own controlled locations. [red]Now, let's deploy our own unit![/red] *First, select the lancer coin in your hand.*1lancer_unit_600637f13b85e69610lancer_unit_600 16
Nekonyancer*Now click here to deploy the lancer!*1square_8_4637f13bc9375a10square_8_4 16
Nekonyancer[blue]Good! Our lancer is ready for action![/blue] *Click on "End Turn" at the top!*1lancer_unit_804637f13bf50df910endturn 16 lancer_unit_804 7
Nekonyancer[blue]Next turn![/blue] If we had another lancer in our hand, we could use the other kind of placement action, called *bolstering.* This involves placing a unit on top of another unit of the same type, creating a stack of 2 (or more!) on the field. We'll see this in action later.1lancer_unit_804637f13ffa75cd00
NekonyancerLet's move onto [red]discard face-down actions![/red] [blue]There are three different actions in this category:[/blue] *- Recruit.* *- Claim initiative.* *- Pass.*2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment637f13ffa75cd00
NekonyancerLet's start with *recruiting,* which lets you put another coin from your supply into your bag! *First, select your cavalry coin.*3cavalry_unit_500637f13ffa75cd10cavalry_unit_500 16
NekonyancerWe're using a cavalry coin for this action, but that doesn't mean we can only recruit cavalry. We can recruit any kind of unit! *Click on the stack of available lancers to recruit one!*1lancer_unit_1000637f14100bb9710lancer_unit_1000 16
NekonyancerGood! [red]*Our cavalry coin*[/red] was discarded face-down, so our opponent can't see what we used. [blue]*Our new lancer coin*[/blue] is in the discard area too. When our bag is empty, all the coins in our discard area will go into it!1hidden_unit_2637f1411106ae00hidden_unit_2 6 lancer_unit_202 7
NekonyancerNext, let's *claim initiative,* another face-down action. Whoever owns the initiative marker goes first, and our opponent owns it at the moment. *First, select our scout coin.*1scout_unit_700637f1429efb8d10scout_unit_700 16
Nekonyancer*Now click on the initiative marker to claim it!*1initiative_unit_0637f14326d4de10initiative_unit_0 16
Nekonyancer*Great!* Just like the previous action, our coin was discarded face-down, so our opponent can't see what we used. By the way, the initiative marker can only be claimed by one player per round. It would be pretty silly otherwise. :)1hidden_unit_2637f14353540200
NekonyancerThe last discard face-down action is *pass.* If you use it, you discard a coin, and then, um, pass. That's it.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment637f14353540200
NekonyancerOkay, both players have now taken three actions, so their hands are empty. That marks the end of the round!3square_6_0637f14353540200
NekonyancerA new round started, so we drew three new coins from our bag. Since we have the initiative marker, we get to go first! Let's deploy an archer! *Click on this one!*1archer_unit_700637f14397c14e10archer_unit_700 16
NekonyancerRemember, units must be deployed on empty controlled locations, so this one here is our only option. *Click here to deploy the archer!*1square_5_3637f1446c835b10square_5_3 16
NekonyancerNext, let's learn about *discard face-up actions,* which are also called *maneuvers.* These actions allow you to maneuver your units on the board! [blue]There are four types:[/blue] *- Move.* *- Attack.* *- Tactic.* *- Control.*1lightcavalry_unit_810637f1467d81cb00
NekonyancerFor these actions, the type of coin discarded must *match* the type of unit being maneuvered. For example, our opponent just [red]*discarded a cavalry unit face-up,*[/red] allowing them to [blue]*move their cavalry unit on the board.*[/blue]2square_8_10637f1467d81cb00lightcavalry_unit_810 7 lightcavalry_unit_1014 6
NekonyancerWell, they didn't actually use the *move* action. That would mean just moving one space in any direction, which any kind of unit can do. Instead, our opponent used the light cavalry's *tactic* action, which is their special ability. [red]The light cavalry's tactic lets it move two spaces at once![/red]3lightcavalry_unit_810637f1467d81cb00lightcavalry_unit_810 6
NekonyancerTheir unit is now on top of a [blue]strategic location.[/blue] They're probably planning to *control* it! Remember, the first player to control six locations wins the game!4lightcavalry_unit_810637f1467d81cb00square_3_9 2 square_4_6 2 square_4_12 2 archer_unit_503 2 square_5_9 2 square_7_7 2 square_7_13 2 lancer_unit_804 2 lightcavalry_unit_810 2 square_9_7 2
NekonyancerIt would be nice if we could *attack* that cavalry, destroying it. But to attack, we need a unit to be *adjacent* to it. Our lancer's *tactic* is perfect for this situation. It lets us move 1 or 2 spaces and then attack, all in the same action!5lightcavalry_unit_810637f1467d81cb00
Nekonyancer*First, click on our lancer!*6lancer_unit_804637f1467d81cb10lancer_unit_804 16
NekonyancerThe spaces around the lancer are now [green]green,[/green] showing that we can *move* there. The opponent's light cavalry is glowing red, showing that use our tactic to move to it and attack! *Click on the opponent's light cavalry!*1square_7_5637f1474ef03710lightcavalry_unit_810 16
NekonyancerGood! We destroyed the opponent's light cavalry, removing the coin from the game! The lancer's tactic is extremely strong, but it comes with a drawback - the lancer cannot attack *UNLESS* it is using the tactic, which involves movement. So if the opponent has a unit right next to our lancer, it won't be able to fight! It will have to run away first, then charge in! 1square_8_10637f1477281f300
NekonyancerCompare the *lancer* to the *cavalry* unit. The cavalry's tactic is a strictly worse version of the lancer's tactic, but the cavalry makes up for it by not having an attack restriction. If cornered, it will be able to stand and fight!2cavalry_unit_800637f1477281f300
NekonyancerHmm, we still have an archer coin to use. Let's *bolster* our deployed archer! *First, click on the archer in our hand.*1archer_unit_600637f14ed69f5610archer_unit_600 16
Nekonyancer*Now click on our deployed archer to bolster it!*1archer_unit_503637f14f39b91710
NekonyancerGood! We have a stack of two archers! This archer stack will function exactly the same as a normal archer. But if it is attacked by an enemy, we will simply discard one coin from the stack. [red]I'm going to skip ahead a few turns now...[/red]1archer_unit_503637f14f60683e00
NekonyancerOkay, back to the tutorial. See this coin here? This is [red]*The Royal Coin.*[/red] This coin is not a unit, so it can't be used for placement actions. And since it does not match any deployed units, it can't be used for discard face-up actions either! We can only use it for *discard face-down* actions. *Go ahead and select it!*1royalcoinraven_unit_500637f153d043e810royalcoinraven_unit_500 16
Nekonyancer*Click here to recruit our last available lancer!*1lancer_unit_1000637f15430d65710
Nekonyancer[blue]*Next round!*[/blue] Perfect, we drew two lancer coins! We can control a location this round! First, we'll have to *move* our lancer onto a location. *Click on our lancer...*1lancer_unit_808637f157fa0a0710lancer_unit_808 16 lancer_unit_500 6 lancer_unit_700 6
Nekonyancer*... and then on this location!*1square_9_7637f158241ed710square_9_7 16
Nekonyancer*Now select the lancer again...*1square_9_7637f1590effaa10lancer_unit_907 16
Nekonyancer*... and click again to control the location it's sitting on!*1squarehex_9_7637f1595c45a110lancer_unit_907 16
Nekonyancer[green]Great! This territory belongs to us now![/green] Three more, and we'll win the game!1lancer_unit_907637f159788dcd00squarehex_9_7 8
Nekonyancer[blue]Here's a quick recap of all the actions:[/blue] *Placement*: deploy, bolster. *Discard face-down:* claim initiative, recruit, pass. *Discard face-up (maneuvers):* move, attack, tactic, control. 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment637f159788dcd00
Nekonyancer[green]You know everything you need to know to play the basic game now,[/green] but I need to mention all the different ways you can customize the game! First of all, this game can be played with *4 people* (2v2).3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment637f159788dcd00
Nekonyancer[blue]There are three important differences in 2v2 mode:[/blue] - Each player gets only 3 kinds of troops. - Each team shares 8 control tokens and starts with 3 controlled territories. - The board is enlarged to include the arrowed areas. (Arrowas?)4square_6_8637f159788dcd01square_3_5 9 square_3_7 9 square_3_9 9 square_3_11 9 square_9_5 14 lancer_unit_907 14 square_9_9 14 square_9_11 14
Nekonyancer[blue]Next, there are four different options for assigning troops to players:[/blue] - Random. - Draft. - Elimination draft (players can ban a troop type before drafting). - Predetermined sets.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment637f159788dcd00
NekonyancerIf you select *predetermined,* there are eight different sets you can choose from - two from the basic set, one with expansion units, and five that were inspired by historical battles. [green]Neat, huh?[/green]6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment637f159788dcd00
NekonyancerThere are two expansions to the game: *Nobility* and *Siege.* In the options, you can choose to play the standard game, nobility, siege, or complete (both expansions).7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment637f159788dcd00
NekonyancerThe *Nobility* expansion adds four units to the game and a new mechanic: *Royal decrees.* Royal decrees are special abilities that can be used by any unit. Three decrees will be laid out at the beginning of the game. Each player may use each decree once throughout the game by discarding the Royal Coin face-up. This action is called *proclaiming.*8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment637f159788dcd00
NekonyancerThe *Siege* expansion adds siege units and fortifications to the game. Four *fortification coins* will be placed on the map at the beginning of the game. They can be attacked like units and destroyed. Cavalry units may not pass through them. Any unit in the same space as a fortification *cannot be attacked.* Any attacker would have to attack and destroy the fortification coin first. Siege units have "siege tactics" instead of normal tactics. Siege tactics may only be used if the unit has been *bolstered.*9archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment637f159788dcd00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for War Chest!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *tchobello* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D11archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment637f159788dcd00
