Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img691d4b8e2fce83.73646788.jpg[/img] The countdown begins and sudden deep roars cut through the air as all the cars leap away from their starting lines; the Grand Prix is underway! [green][tip] This 63-step tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1order-1000
NekonyancerIn *Heat: Pedal to the Metal,* everyone races around the track for a given number of laps to determine the best driver. Your skill as a driver comes down to how well you manage the cards in your hand and the *heat* in your engine. You'll also need to make smart decisions - when do you give your engine a chance to [blue]cool off,[/blue] and when do you put the pedal to the metal?2order-1000
NekonyancerIn this tutorial, we'll be playing as the [blue]*blue car.*[/blue] Our opponent, *neko3,* is the *black car.* The other four cars are *Legends,* automated opponents controlled by a special deck of cards.3car-1000car-1 2
NekonyancerAt the beginning of the game, our starting positions are *randomized.* Looks like we drew the short straw here, but don't worry. Sometimes hanging back for a bit will help us get further ahead later! [blue]Before we get moving, I think I should show you how our car works under the hood.[/blue] (Scroll down for the next text box.)4car-1000
NekonyancerThis is our [red]*hand.*[/red] We will always have 7 cards in our hand at the beginning of a round.5personal-card-22-front000player-table-11941354-hand 1
NekonyancerThis is your *Dashboard.* On it, you'll see three piles for cards: a [blue]*draw pile,*[/blue] a [red]*Heat pile,*[/red] and a [green]*discard pile.*[/green]7player-table-11941354-board000personal-card-personal-card-player-table-11941354-deck-fake-top-card-back 2 personal-card-43-front 1 player-table-11941354-discard 3
NekonyancerThe [blue]*Draw Pile*[/blue] is where our hand of 7 cards was drawn from. We can pay Heat Cards at various points in the game, moving them from our [red]*Heat Pile*[/red] to our [green]*Discard Pile.*[/green] When our Draw Pile is empty, the Discard Pile (along with any added heat cards) is shuffled, becoming the new Draw Pile.9tuto_pointer_personal-card-43-front000personal-card-personal-card-player-table-11941354-deck-fake-top-card-back 2 personal-card-43-front 1 player-table-11941354-discard 3
NekonyancerThe nine circles across the top of your Dashboard represent the nine steps that make up each round. It sounds like a lot, but it's really not. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed37890726.73767640.jpg[/img] Some of the steps have a *( ! )* next to them, indicating that the step is *mandatory.* Others are *situational* - they may not apply to our turn.10player-table-11941354-board000
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed37ade683.14907945.jpg[/img] [red]*Step 1: Shift Gears*[/red] (mandatory)---Your gear is indicated by the [red]*gearshift*[/red] on the right side of your dashboard. It determines how many cards we can play during the round. Everyone starts the game in 1st gear.12player-table-11941354-gear000player-table-11941354-gear 1
NekonyancerGenerally, the more cards we play, the faster we'll go, so we'll definitely want to get out of 1st gear. Shifting 1 gear is free, but as the icon on our dashboard shows, shifting *2* gears at once will strain the engine, generating [red]*1 heat!*[/red] (Again, that means we'd move 1 heat card from the [red]heat pile[/red] to the [green]discard pile.[/green]) [green](Step 10/63)[/green]13player-table-11941354-gear000personal-card-43-front 1 player-table-11941354-discard 3
NekonyancerStaying in Gear 1 or 2 also provides [blue]*cooldown,*[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed37cca882.85267795.jpg[/img] which is how we get rid of heat. !!! [blue]Cooldown[/blue] can only be used on [red]Heat[/red] cards when they're in our hand though!14player-table-11941354-gear000
NekonyancerOn BGA, Step 1: Shift Gears is tied together with... [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed37ec5496.81557408.jpg[/img] [red]*Step 2: Play Cards*[/red] (mandatory)---All we have to do is select some cards to play. BGA will automatically understand what gear we're shifting into by the number of cards we select.15personal-card-29-front000personal-card-28-front 2 personal-card-16-front 2 personal-card-22-front 2 personal-card-27-front 2 personal-card-29-front 2 personal-card-30-front 1 personal-card-42-front 3
NekonyancerThere are 3 kinds of cards: [blue]*Basic cards:*[/blue] move the number of spaces shown. [red]*Heat cards:*[/red] They just clog your hand! [green]*Stress cards:*[/green] Move a random number of spaces.16personal-card-22-front000personal-card-28-front 2 tuto_pointer_personal-card-28-front 2 personal-card-16-front 2 personal-card-22-front 2 personal-card-27-front 2 personal-card-29-front 2 personal-card-30-front 1 tuto_pointer_personal-card-30-front 1 personal-card-42-front 3
Nekonyancer*Select the 2 indicated cards.* *Then click on "Play selected cards" at the top!* ... It didn't work. I know. Tutorials are buggy. It will work in a real game though! *Click on "Continue!"*18personal-card-29-front650f925ab1fc000personal-card-29-front 16 personal-card-42-front 16
Nekonyancer[blue]Great![/blue] Once all the players lock in their cards, we'll move onto... [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed38153861.25611228.jpg[/img] [red]*Step 3: Reveal & Move*[/red] (mandatory)---If the name of the step didn't tip you off, this is when we reveal our cards and move our cars! [green]This is always done in order, from first to last place on the track![/green]1order-1650f925ab274000
NekonyancerBut each space on the track has slots for 2 cars. [blue]How can you tell who's ahead?[/blue] Well, look very closely at the track. There's a thick white line along one edge of the track. This is called the *Race Line.* Whichever car is closer to that line is ahead. In this case, [green]Green[/green] is closer, so [green]Green[/green] will move first.4car-5650f925ab274000
NekonyancerAlso, remember how we had to stop after Step 2 to wait until everyone was done? Steps 3-8 work differently. When it's a player's turn to move their car, they'll quickly go through all those steps.5car-2650f925ab274000
NekonyancerThey moved 10 spaces, automatically occupying the slot *closest to the Race Line.* Regarding Legend (bot) movement, you don't really need to know what's going on under the hood. If you're really curious and want to predict their movement, you can check out the mechanics of Legend movement on Page 5 of the Advanced Rules.7car-2650f925ab343c00
NekonyancerNext, Yellow will move, followed by Gray, Black, and so on.8car-5650f925ab343c00
NekonyancerOur opponent, *neko3,* just moved into the second slot of the same space as Gray. Unlike many other racing games, positions like this [red]do not block[/red] other cars from moving through them. However, if someone tried to end their movement exactly on this space, they would have to stop one space earlier instead. [green](Step 20/63)[/green]1car-0650f927350ed200
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, it's finally our turn to move![/blue] Scroll down to our Dashboard for the next text box.1order-1650f92769a23b00
NekonyancerThe cards we selected are shown here - [red]*a 5 and a Stress card.*[/red] BGA will now determine exactly how many spaces the Stress card will move us. This is done by flipping cards from our deck until we reveal a number card from *1-4.*2personal-card-42-front650f92769a23b00personal-card-29-front 1 personal-card-42-front 1
Nekonyancer[blue]We drew a 3 for the Stress card![/blue] Together with the *5,* that brings our total movement to *8* for this turn.3personal-card-23-front650f92769ab9600personal-card-23-front 2
NekonyancerWe must move *exactly* as many spaces as the cards we played indicate. *Click on "Move 8 cell(s)" to move!*4chooseSpeed8_button650f92769b2c210
NekonyancerOkay, that was Step 3. We'll immediately move onto Step 4 because each player actually performs Steps 3-8 when they move their car, without waiting for other players. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed38325dd8.16809902.jpg[/img] [red]*Step 4: Adrenaline*[/red] (situational)---This only applies to the *last* car to move each round. Or, in a game with *5/6* players, the *last two* cars to move.1car-1650f9283cfe6c00
NekonyancerAdrenaline grants us *1 extra speed* and *1 extra [blue]cooldown[/blue]* this round, but we don't have to use them if we don't want to!2car-1650f9283cfe6c00
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3851b259.13500813.jpg[/img] [red]*Step 5: React*[/red] (situational)---This is when we trigger extra speed from adrenaline, cooldown, or boosts!3car-1650f9283cfe6c00
NekonyancerLet's start with [blue]Cooldown.[/blue] It says that we have 2 Cooldown; we got one from adrenaline and one from being in 2nd gear this round. Unfortunately, we only have 1 Heat in our hand, so 1 unit of Cooldown will be wasted. *Click here to use Cooldown!*4actReactcooldown_2_button650f9283cfe6c10
Nekonyancer*Good!* If you scroll down, you'll see that the Heat card in our hand was placed on top of our *Heat pile.* (That's the middle pile on our Dashboard.)1order-1650f9298598f300
NekonyancerNext, let's use the extra movement that we got from Adrenaline! *Click here!* [green](Step 30/63)[/green]2actReactadrenaline_1_button650f9298598f310
NekonyancerThe third thing we can do in this step is use a *Boost.* *Boosting* costs [red]1 Heat.[/red] (1 Heat will be moved from our Heat Pile to our Discard Pile). If we use it, we'll reveal cards from the top of our draw pile until we find a number from *1-4,* just like when we use a Stress card.1actReactheated-boost_1_button650f92a26377700
NekonyancerPersonally, I usually prefer to play things cool. *Click on "Pass!"*2actPassReact_button650f92a26377710
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed386df268.84793157.jpg[/img] [red]*Step 6: Slipstream*[/red] (situational)---This only applies if we ended our movement *next to* or *behind* another car! It allows us to move *exactly* 2 spaces ahead. If that space is full, we'll have to settle for the space behind it, just like during normal movement.1car-1650f92b09ca8c00
NekonyancerIn this case, we're directly behind [red]Red,[/red] so we can do it! *Click on "Move 2 cell(s)" at the top!*2car-1650f92b09ca8c10chooseSpeed2_button 16
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed388e3546.95823494.jpg[/img] [red]*Step 7: Check Corner*[/red] (situational)---This only applies if we pass through a corner, [blue]*like this one.*[/blue]1corner-12650f92b25d34200corner-12 2
NekonyancerThe number on a corner is basically a *speed limit.* If we exceed the limit, we must pay the difference in Heat. For example, if we pass the *7*-speed corner with a speed of *9,* we'll have to pay *2* heat. And if you don't have enough Heat to pay... oof. [red]You don't want to know.[/red]2corner-12650f92b25d34200
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed38afac25.45818015.jpg[/img] [red]*Step 8: Discard cards*[/red] (optional)---In this step, we can select any number of cards from our hand and discard them.3personal-card-16-front650f92b25d34200
NekonyancerHowever, you cannot discard [red]Heat[/red] or *Stress* cards. Those can only be dealt with in the ways you've seen - [red]Heat[/red] with [blue]Cooldown,[/blue] *Stress* by playing the card.4personal-card-16-front650f92b25d34200
NekonyancerHmm... I think our cards are fine. Let's keep them. *Click on [red]"No additional discard"[/red] at the top!*5personal-card-16-front650f92b25d34210actNoDiscard_button 16
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img691d4b8e4c61f0.09940383.jpg[/img] [red]*Step 9: Replenish hand*[/red] (mandatory)---Each player draws until they have *7 cards* in their hand again. [green](Step 40/63)[/green]1personal-card-22-front650f92d152b9100
NekonyancerLooks like we drew a whole bunch of 2s!2personal-card-20-front650f92d1547da00personal-card-19-front 2 personal-card-20-front 2 personal-card-21-front 2
Nekonyancer*Okay, that was one complete round!* Let's go through one more together so I know you've got it. First, we have [red]Step 1: Shift Gears[/red] and [red]Step 2: Play Cards.[/red] *I'll go ahead and play these 3 cards for you...*3personal-card-20-front650f92d1547da00personal-card-20-front 16 personal-card-21-front 16 personal-card-27-front 16
NekonyancerNext is [red]Step 3: Reveal & Move.[/red] Remember, this is done in whatever order our cars are in on the track.1car-4650f930c2542d00
NekonyancerOur opponent, *neko3,* is about to travel through the corner! Remember, if they exceed the speed limit, they must pay the difference in [red]Heat![/red]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment650f931cefa9a00corner-12 2
NekonyancerWhat the heck?! Where did they learn to drive? They blazed right through at *10 speed!* That means they have to pay [red]*3 heat!*[/red] And... wait, what are they... No... No, wait! [red]STOP!![/red]1car-0650f932723d4500
Nekonyancer*Unbelievable!* They used a *boost* at the worst possible time, increasing their speed to *12.* Since the corner speed limit was *7,* they had to pay *5* heat, plus *1* for triggering the boost. They didn't have enough heat cards to pay that... [blue]so they spun out.[/blue]1car-0650f932b0b2f000car-0 2
Nekonyancer[red]When you spin out...[/red] - You pay as much heat as you can. - You go back to the space before the corner that made you spin out. - You add 1 extra Stress card to your hand if you're in 1st/2nd gear. 2 cards if 3rd or 4th gear. - You immediately shift to 1st Gear. *Neko3's* engine is flooded with Heat now, and he can't control his speed because of his Stress... Don't let this happen to you!2car-0650f932b0b2f000
Nekonyancer[blue]It's our turn![/blue] We selected 2, 2, and 4, moving a total of *8* spaces. Since the speed limit is 7, we'll have to pay 1 Heat. *Click on "Move 8 cell(s)" at the top!*1car-1650f933eb629010chooseSpeed8_button 16
NekonyancerWe were, again, one of the last 2 cars to move this round, so [red]Step 4: Adrenaline[/red] applied. Time to [red]React (Step 5).[/red] Unfortunately, we don't have any heat in our hand, so the [blue]Cooldown[/blue] doesn't do us any good at the moment. We could use the extra speed... but if we do, we'll have to pay an additional Heat because of the [blue]*Corner speed limit!*[/blue]1corner-12650f934e37f7300corner-12 2
NekonyancerAnd if we *boost,* well, we'll end up just like *neko3!* *Click on Pass!* [green](Step 50/63)[/green]2actPassReact_button650f934e37f7310
Nekonyancer[red]Step 6: Slipstream.[/red] We are next to Yellow, so we can move two spaces forward for free. Unlike Adrenaline, [green]the movement from Slipstream does not count as speed![/green] We can safely use it without paying more heat.1car-1650f936b2db5b00
Nekonyancer[red]However, this doesn't mean Slipstreaming is always safe.[/red] Let's say that we had a Speed of 12, and we ended up right where Neko3 is now. If we then Slipstreamed after that, it would push us past the corner, so our speed of 12 would then be compared to the limit of 7, and we'd pay 5 Heat. Ouch. [blue]In such a situation, the button at the top would have a Heat icon on it, so look out for that![/blue]2car-0650f936b2db5b00chooseSpeed2_button 2
NekonyancerAnyway, Slipstreaming is fine for us here. *Go ahead and click!*3chooseSpeed2_button650f936b2db5b10
NekonyancerWe paid 1 Heat for [red]Step 7: Check corner.[/red] [red]Step 8: Discard.[/red] *Select the "0" card, followed by the "1" card. Then click on "Discard 2 selected cards" at the top!*1personal-card-16-front650f936e2342410personal-card-28-front 16 personal-card-16-front 16
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, I think you got the hang of it![/blue] The game will continue as you've seen until each player completes a given number of laps. You can see your current lap and how many are required in your [red]*player information panel.*[/red] [green]In this case, we need to finish 2 laps.[/green]1lap-counter-wrapper-1650f938b5d76b00lap-counter-wrapper-1 1
NekonyancerAt the end of a round, if a car has passed the finish the line for the final time, their car is removed and placed in first available slot in the *Hall of Fame,* which is in the top-left corner of the board. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed38eb90f3.10345681.jpg[/img] If multiple cars finish in the *same round,* their rankings are determined by whoever is *furthest ahead on the track.*2order-1650f938b5d76b00
NekonyancerThe last thing I have to mention is the customization options in the lobby! There are [blue]3 Modes[/blue] to choose from: *First Game:* 1 lap, USA, no additional modules. *Beginner:* Full length, can choose a circuit, no additional modules. *Standard:* Full length, can choose circuit and modules.3order-1650f938b5d76b00
Nekonyancer[blue]You can also choose...[/blue] - How many Legends you play with, up to a maximum of 6 cars. - How "pro" you want the Legends to be. - Which track you want to race on (5 options). Some tracks modify how much Heat and Stress you start with! Finally, there are two modules you can add to the game: *Garage* and *Weather/Road Conditions.*4order-1650f938b5d76b00
Nekonyancer*Garage Module:* I didn't mention this before, but the 0 and 5 speed cards that we saw earlier - as well as the Heat card that starts in our deck - are actually called *upgrade* cards. They're easily identifiable by the tire marks in the top-left and top-right corners. [blue]With the Garage Module, those 3 upgrade cards are replaced with other cards, offering new exciting abilities![/blue]5order-1650f938b5d76b00
NekonyancerIf you play with this module, another option is presented - give each player 3 *random* upgrade cards or institute a *Draft Phase* at the beginning of the game. Don't worry, you'll be able to hover over each card to see what they do. [green]If you want detailed explanations for each card, check out Page 3 of the Advanced Rules.[/green]6order-1650f938b5d76b00
Nekonyancer*Road/Weather Conditions module:* This module modifies the track, affecting each player equally. One Weather Condition tile will be drawn and placed here, in the top-left corner of the map: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3917bb97.08786957.jpg[/img] It will adjust... - How many [red]Heat[/red] cards each player starts with in their Heat Pile. - How many *Stress* cards are mixed into each player's draw pile.7order-1650f938b5d76b00
Nekonyancer*Road Condition tiles* alter gameplay in small areas and are placed at these points on the track... [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed393623a0.34368423.jpg[/img] [green]This tile, for example, increases slipstream movement from 2 spaces to 3 for all players.[/green] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed39500428.06909147.jpg[/img]8order-1650f938b5d76b00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Heat!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank-you goes out to *thoun* and *Tisaac* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D9order-1650f938b5d76b00
