Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed862b90a9.31135283.jpg[/img] For over 300 million years, trees have traded with fungi in underground symbiotic relationships known as *mycorrhizas.* Trees offer some of the carbon that they photosynthesize in exchange for nutrients that the fungi extract from the soil. Scientists still haven't uncovered all the secrets of the Undergrove! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn Undergrove, we will play as a mature Douglas-Fir tree in the Pacific Northwest region of America. Our goal is to establish *seedlings* and - with some help from our fungal friends - successfully grow them into *trees.* [green]At the end of the game, the player who has grown the best set of seedlings with the most valuable symbiotic relationships will win![/green]2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerThis is the [blue]"*Forest*"[/blue] - the community of mushrooms that will help our seedlings grow. It will always start with the same five mushrooms in this exact configuration. At the beginning of the game, as part of the setup, each player must place their first *seedling* in the Forest, along with one *root.*4champi_49000champi_21 2 champi_52 2 champi_15 2 champi_49 2 champi_50 2
NekonyancerSeedlings can only be placed at corner intersections between at least two mushrooms. There are four valid placement locations right now, all of which are [blue]*glowing blue.*[/blue]5champi_49000
Nekonyancer*Click [blue]here[/blue] to place your first seedling!*6circle_0_1010circle_0_1 2
Nekonyancer*Good!* The triangular thing that appeared next to the seedling is a *root.* Roots always extend diagonally outward from seedlings. Since there are four diagonal directions, that means each seedling can support four roots. BGA automatically placed our *first* root for us so that it points *inward,* toward the [red]*center mushroom.*[/red]1champi_2165e65a97a09bc00champi_21 6
NekonyancerOur opponent placed their first seedling in the opposite corner. Again, their root was automatically placed so that it pointed inward. Since this is a 2-player game, *black circles* were placed on the remaining two locations, blocking them.1champi_4965e65a9dd3b6c00
Nekonyancer[green]Okay, we're done with the setup! Now the game will start for real.[/green] Each turn, we can take 1 of 5 different actions. These actions are all listed on your *Player Board,* which you'll see if you scroll down. [blue]It's the board with a big tree on it![/blue]2playerboard_9214348765e65a9dd3b6c00
Nekonyancer[red]*The 5 actions are...*[/red] *• Activate* *• Absorb* *• Reproduce* *• Partner* *• Photosynthesize*3bigicone_activation_y_9214348765e65a9dd3b6c00aide_1 6 aide_2 6 aide_3 6 aide_4 6 aide_5 6
NekonyancerWe can also find our stockpiles for [red]*four different resources*[/red] on our Player Board: Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Nitrogen (N), and Carbon (C), each represented by their Atomic symbol.4bignbre_k_9214348765e65a9dd3b6c00bignbre_n_92143487 1 bignbre_p_92143487 1 bignbre_k_92143487 1 bignbre_c_92143487 1
NekonyancerEach action has a *resource cost* shown along the left side of the action box. For example, the [blue]*Partner*[/blue] action costs 1 Carbon and 2 Potassium.5aide_465e65a9dd3b6c00aide_4 7
NekonyancerThe middle of the action box shows the *effects,* which occur in order from top to bottom. Anything with a slightly darker background is an *optional effect.* For example, the [blue]*Partner*[/blue] action gives us the *option* of paying 1 additional non-carbon resource to place a new mushroom in the Undergrove. Afterward, we can place 2 new roots.6aide_465e65a9dd3b6c00aide_4 7
Nekonyancer[green][tip] If you don't have patience for iconography, just hover over any action (or any mushroom) to see an explanation![/green] Let's try the action. *Click on [red]Partner[/red] at the top!*7aide_465e65a9dd3b6c10Partner 6
NekonyancerThe first effect listed in the action box is the optional one. Let's do it! *Click on [red]Yes![/red]*1placechampipartner65e65aaa6aa1710placechampipartner 6
NekonyancerWe must choose which resource to spend on the optional effect. We can't use Potassium (K) on it because we're using all of it to trigger the action. *Select [red]Phosphorus (P)![/red]*1P65e65aadd56ef10P 6
NekonyancerSince we paid for the optional effect, we can choose a mushroom from our [green]*hand*[/green] to add to the Forest. As you can see, we started with 3 different mushrooms, and we'll always draw back up to 3 at the end of our turn. *Select the Black Elfin Saddle!*1playerhand65e65ab43144f10champi_19 16 playerhand 8
NekonyancerAll the valid placements for the mushroom should now be [blue]*glowing blue.*[/blue] As you can see, new mushrooms must be placed adjacent to at least 1 existing mushroom.1champi_2165e65ab7bce3d00
NekonyancerLet's place the mushroom next to our seedling. *Click here!*2square_-1_165e65ab7bce3d10square_-1_1 16
NekonyancerNow for the rest of Partner's effect, which is to place two roots onto our seedlings! If we had multiple seedlings, we could add one root to two different ones. *First, click [blue]here[/blue] to extend a root into the Black Elfin Saddle.*1minisquare_-1_1_0_165e65ab93229f10minisquare_-1_1_0_1 2
Nekonyancer*Place the second one [blue]here,[/blue] extending into the Common Deceiver!*1minisquare_0_1_0_165e65abb9f8b610minisquare_0_1_0_1 2
Nekonyancer*Finally, [red]confirm[/red] your action!*1Confirm65e65abe8a60d10Confirm 6
NekonyancerOkay, that's it for our first turn! [blue]Now our opponent will take their turn...[/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65e65ac17ca7000
Nekonyancer[blue]Next turn![/blue] Let's put those roots to use by using the *Activate* action! *Activate* allows us to trigger the effects of any mushroom in which we have a *root.*1champi_5065e65b7c25c1a00champi_21 1
NekonyancerThe costs and effects of activating a mushroom are similar to the actions on our Player Board - costs are on the left, effects in the middle - but the *icons* are a little more complicated.2champi_1965e65b7c25c1a00
NekonyancerFor example, most mushrooms will have a gray icon with a white arrow in their cost. These icons refer to the flipping of [red]*Activation Tokens,*[/red] which are located at the top of your Player Board. Each player gets *four* - one for each mushroom color.3bigicone_activation_p_9214348765e65b7c25c1a00bigicone_activation_b_92143487 6 bigicone_activation_p_92143487 6 bigicone_activation_g_92143487 6 bigicone_activation_y_92143487 6
NekonyancerTo activate the Black Elfin Saddle, we'll have to flip the Activation Token of the same color as the mushroom - *yellow.* We'll also have to pay 1 Carbon. [blue]But note the mushroom silhouette next to the carbon cost![/blue]4champi_1965e65b7c25c1a00
NekonyancerThat silhouette means that the carbon we pay will be placed [red]directly on the mushroom.[/red] It won't simply disappear like the carbon we used on the Partner action.5champi_1965e65b7c25c1a00
NekonyancerThe effect of this mushroom is pretty nice - 3 phosphorus and 1 potassium. Unfortunately, it will also give 1 phosphorus to each of our opponents. [green][tip] Again, you can hover over the mushroom to read the effect in text.[/green] Let's activate it! *Click on [red]Activate[/red] at the top!*6champi_1965e65b7c25c1a10Activate 6
NekonyancerNext, we have to choose which mushroom to activate. Like I mentioned before, we can only activate mushrooms in which we have a *root.* *Click on the Black Elfin Saddle!*1champi_1965e65ba408e5c10champi_19 16
Nekonyancer[blue]Alright, our tree is swimming in phosphorus now![/blue] If you want to check your resource stockpiles, you might find it easier to refer to [red]*this panel up here,*[/red] rather than scrolling down to your board all the time.1icone_ressources65e65bb6e6ca800icone_ressources 1
NekonyancerNote that the *Yellow* activation token is now *gray,* showing that it has been used. If we want to use the Black Elfin Saddle again, we'll need to *refresh* our activation tokens. [green]We'll get into that a little later.[/green]2icone_activation_y_9214348765e65bb6e6ca800bigicone_activation_y_92143487 5 icone_activation_y_92143487 5
Nekonyancer[red]Also, note that the small white number in a black circle changed from 0 to 1.[/red] These numbers show the amount of *Carbon* in each mushroom. There's a number on each seedling too! [green]You'll see why this is important soon.[/green]3champi_1965e65bb6e6ca800
Nekonyancer[blue]Next turn![/blue] Since we have so much phosphorus, let's use the [red]*Reproduce*[/red] action. As it shows on our Player Board, this will cost 1 carbon and 2 phosphorus. *Click on [red]"Reproduce"[/red] at the top!*1Reproduce65e65bf33ae4310Reproduce 6 aide_3 6
NekonyancerLike the *Partner* action, *Reproduce* allows us to pay an additional non-carbon resource to place a mushroom. Let's do it! *Click on [red]"Yes!"[/red]*1placechampireproduce65e65cb24e99c10placechampireproduce 6
Nekonyancer*Spend [red]Phosphorus![/red]*1P65e65cb76bbcb10P 6
Nekonyancer*Select the Panthercap mushroom.*1champi_4265e65cbb3676610champi_42 16
Nekonyancer*Place it here!*1square_2_-165e65ccb4083010square_2_-1 16
NekonyancerNow for Reproduce's main effect - place a new seedling and a root. *Place our new seedling [blue]here![/blue]*1circle_2_065e65cd390a0510circle_2_0 2
NekonyancerNext, we'll place the root. *Click [blue]here[/blue] to place it on the Panthercap!*1minisquare_2_-1_2_065e65cd624a3610minisquare_2_-1_2_0 2
Nekonyancer*Finally, [red]confirm[/red] your actions!*1Confirm65e65cd969a5110Confirm 6
Nekonyancer[blue]Next, let's learn about the *Absorb* action.[/blue] The *Absorb* action lets us absorb one carbon from a mushroom into one of our seedlings, but we can only do this if we have a *root* extended into that mushroom. The absorbed carbon will stay on the seedling; [red]it will not go onto our Player Board![/red]1champi_5065e65d502dcab00
Nekonyancer[green]Absorbing carbon is one of the main ways to score points in Undergrove.[/green] At the end of the game, each seedling can *score* 1 adjacent mushroom for each carbon it has absorbed, but it will also need a *root* in that mushroom.2champi_1965e65d502dcab00
NekonyancerEach mushroom's Victory Point value is shown in pinecones along the bottom. For example, the [red]*Black Elfin Saddle*[/red] is worth *3* points. Some mushrooms, like the [green]*Panthercap,*[/green] have variable point values, depending on how many resources we deposit when the mushroom is activated.3champi_4265e65d502dcab00champi_19 1 champi_42 3
NekonyancerAs it shows on our [blue]*Player Board,*[/blue] the Absorb action has a cost of 1 non-carbon resource and the flipping of one Activation Token. This is normally where I'd have you click on [red]*the action,*[/red] but this step is bugged. Just *click on "Continue"* instead, and I'll click on [red]*Absorb*[/red] for you.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65e65d502dcab00Absorb 6 aide_2 7
NekonyancerHmm, I don't think we'll need [red]*this particular token*[/red] any time soon. *Flip it!*1Activationg65e65d554122c10Activationg 6
NekonyancerFor our resource, let's pay Phosphorus! *Click [red]here![/red]*1P65e65d575529210P 6
NekonyancerNow for the effects. First, we have to select a seedling to absorb carbon. *Select [blue]this one![/blue]*1semi_0_1_9214348765e65d5c81b6610semi_0_1_92143487 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Next, we have to select a mushroom from which to absorb carbon.[/blue] We can choose any mushroom in which we have a root OR any mushroom that is *adjacent* to one of those mushrooms. However, if we absorb from a distant mushroom, we'll have to [red]pay a resource/flip an activation token[/red] for shipping and handling.1maintitlebar_content65e65d5fb8cae00
NekonyancerThere's no need to "import" carbon right now. *Click on the Black Elfin Saddle to absorb carbon from it!*2champi_1965e65d5fb8cae10champi_19 16
Nekonyancer*Great!* Our seedling now has *1 carbon* on it, which means it can score points from *1 mushroom* at the end of the game!1champi_1965e65d69823f400carbontrack 1
NekonyancerNext, I'll explain the [red]*Carbon Track board -*[/red] the one with lots of leaves and stones on it. At the end of any turn on which we absorbed carbon, we must move our tracker one step up the track. Each space has a different bonus on it. [green]BGA already moved our tracker and gave us the bonus: 1 Nitrogen.[/green]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65e65d69823f400carbontrack 1
NekonyancerSome steps have stacks of [red]*bonus tiles*[/red] on them. When we reach one, we can look through the stack, keep one, and put the rest back, face-down. The bonus tile we keep will stay hidden from other players until we play it to gain the bonus shown on it. [green]Possible bonuses include resources, victory points, and activation token refreshment.[/green]3tiles_265e65d69823f400tiles_1 1 tiles_2 1 tiles_3 1
NekonyancerWhen someone reaches the end of the track, they can move their tracker onto one of [red]*five different spaces*[/red] and gain the bonus on it. !!! [red]Moving to one of these spaces triggers the end of the game![/red] Everyone *finishes the round* (so all players have had the same number of turns), and then plays *one more round.* Then the game ends!4track965e65d69823f400track9 1 track10 1 track11 1 track12 1 track13 1
Nekonyancer[blue]There's one more action I need to show you: *Photosynthesize!*[/blue] As it shows on your Player Board, this action has 4 effects: *1.* Gain 2 Carbon. *2.* Can convert any amount of Nitrogen into more Carbon. *3.* Refresh all Activation Tokens. *4.* Can discard any mushrooms from hand to draw replacements.1maintitlebar_content65e65d7d82a9400aide_5 7
NekonyancerLet's do it! *Click on [red]Photosynthesize![/red]*2Photo65e65d7d82a9410Photo 6
NekonyancerWe have the option of converting Nitrogen into Carbon. Let's convert 2. *Click [red]here![/red]*1Yesphotoechange65e65d868997510Yesphotoechange 6
Nekonyancer[red]*Click again!*[/red]1Yesphotoechangesupp65e65d9bc36b310Yesphotoechangesupp 6
NekonyancerOkay, I think that's enough Carbon. *Click on [red]Pass![/red]*1Nophotoechangesupp65e65d9f2a6dd10Nophotoechangesupp 6
NekonyancerNow we can select mushrooms from our hand to discard. *Select the Rosy Slime Spike and the Crested Coral. Then click on [red]"Validate selection"[/red] at the top!*1playerhand65e65da25238e10Validerphotodiscard 6 champi_3 16 champi_53 16
Nekonyancer*Good!* All our [red]*Activation Tokens*[/red] have been refreshed, and we have plenty of [blue]*carbon*[/blue] with which to take more actions.1icone_c65e65dbbc5fb600player_activation_92143487 6 icone_c 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, I think you've seen enough! There are just a couple extra things I need to mention.[/blue] First of all, when a seedling absorbs its 3rd carbon, it is automatically replaced with a *tree!* A tree can score points for all of its roots, but it can't absorb any more carbon.2maintitlebar_content65e65dbbc5fb600
NekonyancerIf you inspect your Player Board carefully, you'll see that your [red]*game pieces*[/red] (trees/seedlings/roots) are *limited.* You don't need to worry too much about those limits though - if you are *Absorbing* as much as you should, the game will end long before you run out of game pieces.3maintitlebar_content65e65dbbc5fb600bigiconeracine_92143487 1 bignbreracine_92143487 1 bigiconesemi_92143487 1 bignbresemi_92143487 1 bigiconearbre_92143487 1 bignbrearbre_92143487 1
NekonyancerFinally, there will always be [red]*3 public goals*[/red] in the game (out of 6).4goals_365e65dbbc5fb600goals_1 1 goals_2 1 goals_3 1
NekonyancerSome goals are [red]*competitive*[/red] - only one person can get the 9-point 1st place reward! Some goals are [blue]*not*[/blue] - any number of players can get the top reward.5goals_265e65dbbc5fb600goals_1 2 goals_2 1
Nekonyancer[green]*Some goals*[/green] refer to a *goal track,* which merely records each player's progress toward that goal. BGA simplified this by putting a [red]*number*[/red] in the top-right corner of each goal card for each player.6goals65e65dbbc5fb600scoregoal_1_1 1 scoregoal_1_2 1 scoregoal_2_1 1 scoregoal_2_2 1 scoregoal_3_1 1 scoregoal_3_2 1 goals_3 3
NekonyancerRemember, the end of the game is triggered when one player reaches the end of the [red]*Carbon Track.*[/red] Players will then finish the round and play one final round. [green]Then we go to scoring![/green]7track965e65dbbc5fb600track9 1 track10 1 track11 1 track12 1 track13 1
Nekonyancer[green]Each player's score is comprised of:[/green] *- Points from mushrooms.* (need adjacent seedling with carbon and a root.) *- Points from goal cards.* *- Points from extra resources.* (1 point for every 2 unused resources) [green]Whoever has the most points wins![/green]8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65e65dbbc5fb600
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Undergrove!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *MathCT* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D9archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65e65dbbc5fb600
