Let's learn how to play Cartographers!

Tips:

• You can press the SPACE key to make the tutorial progress instead of using buttons.

• You can use    to minimize tutorial explanations if needed.

This tutorial exists thanks to: gideon142

gideon142Welcome to *Cartographers,* a 1-99 (only 1-12 on BGA) player game where each player is charting the unknown on their maps. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9c96afa8.37783265.jpg[/img]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
gideon142The game is played across [red]4 seasons[/red] (spring summer fall winter) each with a time limit (8 8 7 6 respectively) [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9cb24a04.11463822.jpg[/img]2car-scoring-card-4-front001car-season-display-wrapper 1
gideon142Cards are flipped from a deck as shown, each showing a shape, a type of land, and a time icon. As you can see on the [red]homestead[/red] card. *It has the small T shape in either village or farm with a time of 2.*3car-scoring-card-4-front001car-season-display-wrapper 1
gideon142*When the time passed* (the homestead card added two) *passes the amount in the season* (in this case eight), the next season starts. So right now, the time passed for spring is 2/8.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
gideon142[tip] At the end of *each season* you score points based on the four objectives labeled A, B, C, and D. *However, each season only uses two of the goals.*5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
gideon142!!! Spring uses goals A and B, summer uses goals B and C, fall uses goals C and D, and winter uses goals D and A.6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
gideon142Hover over *the goal cards* to read how to score points with each goal. (Reputation stars are points.)7car-scoring-card-1-front000
gideon142*The player with the most points at the end of all four seasons is the winner.*8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
gideon142There will always be one goal related to [red]village spaces,[/red] one goal related to [green]forest spaces,[/green] one goal related to *farm and water* spaces, and one goal related to your *general map.*9archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
gideon142Now we should play the shape of the homestead card somewhere onto our map (seen below.)10archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
gideon142Let's play the [red] village [/red] by clicking on it at the top, selecting the square B1 on the map, and hitting confirm.11car-tile-selection-button-5-village010confirmTilePlacement 1 car-tile-selection-button-5-village 1
gideon142Great! *Those four village spaces we just played will score four points at the end of the round with the great city goal.*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66323583625e900
gideon142[tip] When playing a piece, it can be rotated or flipped to change its orientation to fit how you want it on the board. *(Spaces can never overlap.)*2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66323583625e900
gideon142With the [red]hamlet[/red] card that was just drawn, we can continue to expand our village, but now we have a choice. We could take the three-space shape or the five-space shape. *However, if we take the three space shape we will gain a coin.*3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66323583625e900
gideon142*Coins will give you one point for each coin you have at the end of the round.* You can obtain coins through choices on cards like [red]hamlet[/red] or by surrounding the four sides of a mountain space on your map.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66323583625e900
gideon142Let's play the coin option for hamlet. Select it at the top, then select E1 on your map, then confirm.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66323583625e910confirmTilePlacement 1 car-tile-selection-button-1-village 16
gideon142[tip] At all times, you can see on the [blue] player panel [/blue] how many points you will score in this season from the two goals and your coins. (And how many points you are losing from monsters; more on that later.)1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment663235a04c51900car-score-track-85761427 7
gideon142You can also click on the arrows at the top of your board to view your opponent's map. 2car-player-area-85761427663235a04c51900
gideon142Another choice, let's play the coin option on C8 this time.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment663235a04c51910car-tile-selection-button-7-water 1
gideon142A *ruins card* was just drawn from the deck! If a Ruins is drawn, ruin icons will be highlighted and it will say "Must cover ruins icon." This means the shape played must overlap one of the ruins spaces. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9cce4226.55511170.jpg[/img]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment663235b24523800
gideon142!!! If at any point you can't play the shown shape or have no more uncovered ruins spaces when a ruins card is drawn, you instead will draw *a 1 by 1 shape of any terrain.*2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment663235b24523800
gideon142There isn't a great place to put this, putting the water on B6 and rotating it once to the right is probably the best play. *While this doesn't accomplish much yet, it is setting up for possibly scoring later in canal lake if we draw a good farm card.* (This step is automated, so just hit continue instead of placing it)3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment663235b24523800tile-controls-rotate-right-85761427-1 1
gideon142Where do you think we should place this shape on our map?1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment663235d706a7a00
gideon142There are many options, but B5 is one of the best. It gets one point in sentinel wood and starts to surround a mountain. Place it now on B5.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment663235d706a7a10
gideon142!!! Because the time just exceeded eight, this is the final draw of this season.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment663235ef6943b00
gideon142Let's play through a few more draws, showing you each drawing.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment663235ef6943b00
gideon142Here the shape was played over the C10 ruins. Do you think that is the best move?1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6632361be739400
gideon142 !!! This is not the best play in this scenario. *Moving it one space down would cover two sides of the mountain and touch the water for canal lake points.*2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6632361be739400
gideon142You can now see the scores from spring on each player panel. We scored 11, and your opponent scored 15.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66323630a740c00
gideon142This time the shape was played in B11. Do you think this is the best move? 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment663236435227a00
gideon142[tip] Yes, this is a good move; it will score us six points in canal lake!2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment663236435227a00
gideon142Uh oh, these are the *monsters.* When a monster card is flipped, you take the map of the player to your right or left (depending on the circular arrows shown on the monster card) and draw the monsters somewhere on it.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6632365f57fdb00car-sheet-mountain-scoring-reminder 1
gideon142Place the monster on E4 to try and block your opponent.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6632365f57fdb10
gideon142*For each uncovered space next to a monster, you lose one point,* so you want to surround them as fast as possible. Right now, you can see our opponent has -8 points for monsters.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6632367c319ff00car-score-track-95836057 1
gideon142The final type of special card is the *riftlands* card. It lets you play a 1 by 1 shape of any terrain with a time of zero, so they are usually quite useful. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9ced1f20.96283113.jpg[/img]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment663236899665300
gideon142That is all the rules for *Cartographers.* Thanks for playing my tutorial! :) If you have any questions about the game or tutorial, feel free to reach out to me (gideon142) on BGA.
