Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed48529e80.51937409.jpg[/img] Earth has run out of resources. You have been selected to develop an unknown planet to preserve the future of humanity. [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1card-64d000
NekonyancerIn *Planet Unknown,* you must score the most victory points via efficient planet development, resource track advancement, collecting lifepods, removing meteorites, and besting your neighboring planets.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerThat big window you saw earlier was *S.U.S.A.N.* You can see a smaller version on the right side of the screen now. *S.U.S.A.N.* is divided into six *depots* of tiles and is surrounded by several colored arrows. Each arrow represents a different player. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed4871a5d5.41793685.jpg[/img]3card-64d000
NekonyancerEach turn, the Station Commander - indicated by [blue]*this pin*[/blue] - will orient *S.U.S.A.N.* however they like. Each player will then choose one tile from the depot their arrow is pointing to and add it to their planet boards. [green]We are the first Station Commander. Let's give it a try![/green]4meeple-firstPlayer000firstPlayer-11941354 7
NekonyancerUse [red]*these buttons*[/red] to orient S.U.S.A.N. so the following depot lines up with the green arrow: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed4894e761.37504331.jpg[/img] If you like, you can use [green]*this button*[/green] for a closer look, like you had at the beginning of this tutorial. When you're ready, click on *"Continue."*5card-64d000btnZoomIn 3 btnSusanRotateCclockwise 1 btnSusanRotateClockwise 1
Nekonyancer*Great!* Now we have to place one of our depot's tiles. [blue]The first tile we place must touch the outer rim of the planet.[/blue] *Select the 1x4 tile. Then click somewhere on the planet to place it.* Several buttons should have appeared to let you rotate and flip the tile however you want. Go ahead and play around with them for a bit.1card-64d65482992bfa3600
NekonyancerWhen you're done familiarizing yourself with the tile controls, position the tile in the bottom-left corner of the planet, as shown here: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed48b2fc95.92966847.jpg[/img] Normally, you'd use the [blue]blue ✔[/blue] to confirm your placement, but we'll use the *Continue* button in this tutorial.2card-5265482992bfa3600
Nekonyancer[blue]Good job![/blue] Next, you've probably noticed that each tile has squares of two different colors. There are five tracks over here on our *company board* that match those colors. [blue]Whenever we place a tile, we'll advance by 1 on the two matching tracks![/blue]1corporation-11941354-biomass-0654829ca7776900
NekonyancerThe five tracks are, from left to right, *Civilization, [blue]Water,[/blue] [green]Biomass,[/green] [red]Rover,[/red]* and Technology. Each track has many *milestones* on it. Some of them - like [red]*this one*[/red] - feature medals, which are this game's version of victory points. [green]At the end of the game, we'll score points from the highest medal milestone we reached on each track.[/green]2corporation-11941354-water-2654829ca7776900corporation-11941354-water-2 1
NekonyancerIt is worth noting that the water track has medal milestones of higher values than other tracks. All the other milestones grant special bonuses whenever we reach them. Each track has its own special type of milestone. [red]*Synergy milestones*[/red] can be found on all the tracks. I'll explain those other milestones as they become relevant.3corporation-11941354-tech-nb-2654829ca7776900corporation-11941354-civ-11 1 corporation-11941354-civ-8 1 corporation-11941354-water-12 1 corporation-11941354-water-7 1 corporation-11941354-water-3 1 corporation-11941354-biomass-10 1 corporation-11941354-biomass-2 1 corporation-11941354-rover-10 1 corporation-11941354-tech-12 1 corporation-11941354-tech-2 1
NekonyancerLet's get back to our turn. The tile we placed has blue and red squares on it, so we'll advance once on the [blue]*Water*[/blue] and [red]*Rover*[/red] tracks. [blue]*Water*[/blue] has a special restriction though. Did you notice that we positioned the blue squares of our tile over spaces like these? [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed48d5d0a1.49024536.jpg[/img] These spaces have *planetary ice.* [red]You can only advance on the water track if at least one of the blue squares covers ice![/red]5corporation-11941354-water-0654829ca7776900
NekonyancerWe can trigger the track advancements in whichever order we like. Let's start with water. *Click [red]here![/red]*6btnChoice0654829ca7776910btnChoice0 6
Nekonyancer*We moved up!* Too bad the space we moved to doesn't have a milestone on it.3corporation-11941354-water-1654829cfafe8d00
NekonyancerThe second space on the [red]*Rover*[/red] track does though! When we reach it, we can place a Rover anywhere on the tile we most recently placed.4corporation-11941354-rover-1654829cfafe8d00corporation-11941354-rover-1 1
Nekonyancer*Click [red]here[/red] to advance on the Rover track!*5btnChoice1654829cfafe8d10btnChoice1 6
NekonyancerNow we must choose where to place the Rover. Do you see the orange thing on the top square of our tile? It's a *meteorite!* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed48eee146.55129740.jpg[/img] A meteorite landed on that space because it featured *this icon:* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed4918cbd6.27690149.jpg[/img]1meeple-61654829d4bceca00
NekonyancerWhenever a Rover is in the same space as a meteorite, it will pick it up for points. Usually, this will involve moving the Rover, but in this case, [green]we can place it directly on the meteorite![/green] *Select the space with the meteorite. Then continue.*2meeple-61654829d4bceca00
Nekonyancer*Good work!* The meteorite went into our [green]*inventory.*[/green] Every 3 meteorites we collect is worth 1 medal at the end of the game!1meteor-reserve-11941354654829d971e7800meteor-reserve-11941354 8
NekonyancerOkay, that's it for our turn. Remember, Planet Unknown is played *simultaneously -* our opponents took their turns while we took ours. When we end our turn, BGA will briefly show us what they did. *Click [red]here[/red] to end our turn.*2btnConfirmTurn654829d971e7810btnConfirmTurn 6
Nekonyancer*Round 2!* The [blue]*Station Commander*[/blue] pin moved to the next player, so now it's their turn to control *S.U.S.A.N.*1meeple-firstPlayer65482a0dd520500firstPlayer-92146574 7
NekonyancerOkay, they confirmed *S.U.S.A.N.'s* position. We have to take one of the two tiles from the depot our arrow is pointing to. *Select the 1x4 tile. Place it as shown here:* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed493b6b54.92460015.jpg[/img] *Then click on "Continue."*1card-5265482a9b3174100
NekonyancerThe tile we placed has [green]*green*[/green] and *black* squares, so we can advance on the [green]*Biomass*[/green] and *Civilization* tracks. *Click [red]here[/red] to advance on the [green]Biomass[/green] track.*1btnChoice065482ad5b7aa310btnChoice0 6
Nekonyancer*Next, click [red]here[/red] to advance on the Civilization track.*3btnChoice165482adca2cd410btnChoice1 6
Nekonyancer[red]Round 3![/red] *Select the smaller of the two tiles and place it as shown:* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed495b8fd6.48206318.jpg[/img] *Then continue.*1card-5265482b1f6e4b800
NekonyancerThe tile we placed has black and brown tiles on it. I'll explain brown terrain in a second. Let's get *Civilization* out of the way first. *Click [red]here![/red]*1btnChoice065482b32887e310btnChoice0 6
NekonyancerIf you look closely, you'll see that the brown terrain we placed has solar panels on it, representing *Energy.* Whenever brown terrain is placed, it lets us advance on one track that has terrain *orthogonally adjacent* to the brown terrain. In this case, we can advance on *black* or [blue]*blue,*[/blue] but not [red]*red.*[/red]1card-64d65482b3eab95c00
NekonyancerHmm... let's go with [red]*Civilization!*[/red] We need *"Continue"* for this step though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯2btnciv65482b3eab95c00btnciv 1
NekonyancerExcellent! We've advanced far enough on the Civilization Track to take a [red]*Civilization Card!*[/red] There are *four* ranked decks of cards, corresponding to [blue]*these four milestones*[/blue] on the track. The number of cards in each deck is equal to the number of players plus one.1decks-info65482b446f2e600corporation-11941354-civ-14 2 corporation-11941354-civ-10 2 corporation-11941354-civ-6 2 corporation-11941354-civ-3 2 decks-info 6
NekonyancerIf multiple players advance far enough to take Civilization cards at the same time, they take them in clockwise order, starting with the [blue]*Station Commander.*[/blue] Because of this, we will wait until our opponents have completed their turns before we claim our card.2meeple-firstPlayer65482b446f2e600firstPlayer-92143487 7
Nekonyancer*Click over here so you can read this more clearly!* We can choose one of the cards now. Click on [red]*this button*[/red] to view them again. The one in the top-left corner has an *immediate* effect. The others will give us medals at the *end of the game.* [green]Take a moment to read them.[/green]1card-64d65482b70b620e00showDeck 1
NekonyancerWe're off to a good start on meteorites, so I think we should take the card with meteorite synergy. *Select the bottom-right card.* You'd normally click on "Confirm" here, but again, we have to use the *"Continue"* button in Tutorial Mode.2card-64d65482b70b620e00
Nekonyancer*Round 4!* We are the [blue]*Station Commander*[/blue] again! *Orient S.U.S.A.N. as shown.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed497d8be7.98731650.jpg[/img] *Then continue.*1card-64d65482b8659f6700
Nekonyancer*Select the tile with 4 squares. Place it as shown.* Note that the water square is positioned over [blue]Planetary Ice.[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed49c0a862.00425830.jpg[/img] *Then continue.*1card-5265482bf096c3e00
NekonyancerGood! *First, we'll advance on water...*1btnChoice065482bfd9302410btnChoice0 6
Nekonyancer*... and then use [red]Energy[/red] to advance on water again!* We'll need the *Continue* button for this step. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯1btnwater65482c04e15f600btnwater 1
NekonyancerWe reached a [blue]*Synergy Milestone!*[/blue] Synergy Milestones let us immediately advance again on *any* track! Hmm... *I think we'll use it on Biomass because...*1corporation-11941354-water-365482c079a55200btnbiomass 1 corporation-11941354-water-3 2
Nekonyancer*... we can reach another [blue]Synergy Milestone![/blue]* I'll use this one on [red]*Rover.*[/red]1corporation-11941354-biomass-265482c0e99e6500btnrover 1 corporation-11941354-biomass-2 2
NekonyancerSince we covered a *"1"* milestone on the Rover track, we can move one of our Rovers *1 space.* You see these big blue barrels? They're called [blue]*lifepods.*[/blue] Everyone started with six of them on their planet at the beginning of the game.1meeple-5965482c18ea44a00
NekonyancerRovers can pick up lifepods just as easily as meteorites. Each one we pick up is worth 1 medal at the end of the game! *Select the space with the Lifepod as our Rover's destination. Then continue.*2meeple-5965482c18ea44a00
Nekonyancer*Great!* The Lifepod is in our [blue]*inventory*[/blue] now, to the left of our meteorite collection.1lifepod-reserve-1194135465482c21328bc00lifepod-reserve-11941354 7
NekonyancerOur Rover is now on the planet, but not on a tile. We can actually place a tile on top of our Rover, but if we do, it will be *destroyed.* [blue]Same goes for Lifepods![/blue] We can place tiles on uncollected Lifepods, but doing so will destroy them!2meeple-6265482c21328bc00
NekonyancerHmm, you know, maybe it picking up the Lifepod was a bad idea because of this [green]*Neighbor Objective.*[/green] If you hover over it with your mouse, the objective will be written out for you. Hmm... the player with the *least lifepods* will earn 5 points. (2 points for a tie.)3card-64d65482c21328bc00card-64d 8
NekonyancerAccording to the numbers on either side of the objective (which are colored according to the players' colors), we currently have *1* lifepod, and our opponent, [red]*nekonekoneko3,*[/red] has *0.*4card-64d65482c21328bc00card-64d-11941354-medal 11 card-64d-92143487-medal 11
NekonyancerWe're in competition with [blue]*nekonekoneko4*[/blue] for a different objective - unique areas of Technology (gray) terrain. [red]Jeez, we're behind in this one too![/red]5card-5265482c21328bc00
NekonyancerYou can use the *arrows* on either side of your name to look at your opponents' boards. [tip] If you want to win those objectives, keep a close eye on your opponents and use S.U.S.A.N. to make sure they don't get what they need!6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65482c21328bc00
NekonyancerI think you have a pretty good feel for how tile placement works now, so I'll [blue]skip ahead[/blue] to show you the last two milestone types.7meeple-6265482c21328bc00
NekonyancerOkay, we just placed a green and gray tile that left an awkward hole on our board, but we can take care of that. *First, advance 1 step on the Technology Track...*1btnChoice065482c7d64a5c10btnChoice0 6
Nekonyancer*... and then 1 space on the Biomass track!*1btnChoice165482c81ae31c10btnChoice1 6
NekonyancerThe [red]*milestone*[/red] we reached gave us a [green]*Biomass Patch!*[/green] We have to place it immediately. It's great for filling in little holes in our planet, like the one we just created. *Place the patch in the hole. Then continue.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed49a1e1d4.80034101.jpg[/img]1corporation-11941354-biomass-365482c840f91800corporation-11941354-biomass-3 1
NekonyancerGreat! I know what you're thinking - [blue]"Why are those patches useful? Who cares if there are holes in our planet?"[/blue] Well, at the end of the game, each completed and meteorite-free row or column in our planet is worth [green]*1/2/3*[/green] medals, depending on its length!1card-64d65482c8c1c5ae00
NekonyancerYou can easily check which rows and columns are complete by looking at the sides of the board. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed4a3c69c1.92682924.jpg[/img] The [red]X[/red]s will change into [green]✔[/green]s!2card-64d65482c8c1c5ae00
NekonyancerThe only track we haven't covered yet is *Technology.* When we reach [red]*these milestones*[/red] in the *Technology* track, we'll unlock special powers! You can read them for yourself. [green][tip] If the font is difficult to read, you can hover over them with your mouse to see a tooltip.[/green]3card-64d65482c8c1c5ae00corporation-11941354-tech-14 1 corporation-11941354-tech-10 1 corporation-11941354-tech-7 1 corporation-11941354-tech-5 1 corporation-11941354-tech-3 1
NekonyancerOkay, that's everything! The game will continue as you've seen until: • One player is unable to place a tile. *OR* • Both stacks of tiles in one of *S.U.S.A.N.'s* depots are completely empty. Then we go to [green]final scoring![/green]4card-64d65482c8c1c5ae00
NekonyancerIf you ever need a reminder about scoring, you can click on [red]*this scorecard.*[/red] And while you're over here, you might want to peruse through the *settings* (see arrow) to optimize your experience. 5show-scores65482c8c1c5ae00show-scores 1 help-mode-switch 9
Nekonyancer[blue]Players earn medals from...[/blue] • Complete rows or columns in their planet without meteorites. • The highest medal milestone they've reached in each of their tracks. • Collected lifepods and meteorites. • Civilization cards. • Neighbor objectives. [green]Whoever has the most medals has given humanity its best hope for survival![/green]6card-64d65482c8c1c5ae00
Nekonyancer[green]You know everything you need to know to play a basic game now![/green] Next, I'll talk about assymetric boards, companies, additional modules, and variants.7card-64d65482c8c1c5ae00
NekonyancerAsymmetric planets are shaped very strangely! *Check it out!* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed49e18391.97029254.jpg[/img] *Wild, huh?* Some planets might also have small rule changes, but they're all clearly explained with tooltips.8card-64d65482c8c1c5ae00
Nekonyancer*Asymmetric companies* have slightly different milestones and very different Technologies. Most of the companies have some sort of additional gameplay mechanic as well. For example, if you play as the *Jump Drive* company, you can place Lifepods on technologies to unlock them early! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed4a1a5c57.46427356.jpg[/img]9card-64d65482c8c1c5ae00
Nekonyancer*Additional Module 1: Private Objectives*---Each player receives two private objectives at the beginning of the game. They must keep one and discard one. They're just like Neighbor Objectives, but private. If you fulfill the conditions, you get medals. Simple.10card-64d65482c8c1c5ae00
Nekonyancer*Additional Module 2: Events*---Each round, after S.U.S.A.N.'s orientation has been established, an Event Card is drawn from the Event Deck. Everyone must then do whatever the card says. [red]!!! Many of these events are harmful![/red]11archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65482c8c1c5ae00
Nekonyancer*2-player Variant*---Players do not choose S.U.S.A.N.'s orientation. S.U.S.A.N. has only two depots and rotates between them each round. Everything else is the same.12archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65482c8c1c5ae00
Nekonyancer*Solo Mode*---The player draws *four* private objective cards at the beginning of the game and keeps *three* of them. S.U.S.A.N. automatically rotates to the next clockwise depot each round. [green]Try to get the highest score you can![/green]13card-64d65482c8c1c5ae00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Planet Unknown!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *Tisaac* and *firgon* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D14card-64d65482c8c1c5ae00
