Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edcdec9dd6.91956230.jpg[/img] Several factions are trying to flourish on an inhospitable world. Their success hinges on their scientific achievements! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer*Age of Innovation* is an updated version of *Terra Mystica.* [green]If you already know how to play Terra Mystica,[/green] you only need to play through the next 9 steps of this tutorial. I'll quickly cover all the new elements! [red]If you don't know how to play,[/red] *skip* the next 9 steps (press the spacebar 9 times).2maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer[blue]*New element #1: Modular factions.*[/blue]---[red]Each faction is no longer shackled to a specific home terrain and palace![/red] At the beginning of each game, BGA will draw seven factions and assign to each one a different *home terrain* and a starting *bonus card.* The terrain type will also determine some of the faction's starting resources. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edce1e27e6.81126288.jpg[/img]3maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerUnlike home terrains, Palaces are not grouped with factions at the beginning of the game. Instead, BGA prepares a *supply* of palace tiles. Whenever a player builds a palace, they can claim one of the available tiles. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edce97ec54.11159339.jpg[/img] The number of available tiles is equal to the number of players + 2, but [red]*this tile*[/red] is always one of them.4maintitlebar_content000stronghold_tile_1 1
Nekonyancer[blue]*New Element #2: Books*[/blue]---Books are a new type of resource. They come in four colors, matching the colors of the Cult tracks (which are now called Disciplines). [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edce37f412.12204988.jpg[/img] There are [red]*three new action spaces*[/red] that require books as payment instead of power.5maintitlebar_content000knowledge_action_clicker_1 6 knowledge_action_clicker_2 6 knowledge_action_clicker_3 6
Nekonyancer[blue]*New Element #3: Innovation tiles*[/blue]---As an action, players can purchase *Innovation tiles* from a limited supply (based on the number of players). Each tile costs *5 books,* some of which must be of specific types. Each tile after the first will cost an additional book, and each player can only buy up to 3 over the course of a game. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edce567675.84113613.jpg[/img]6maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer[blue]Innovation tiles can grant...[/blue] - Resource income. - Point income. - Special actions. - Victory points depending on various criteria. There are *18* different tiles in all, so you won't see the same options in every game!7maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer[blue]*New Element #4: Neutral Buildings*[/blue]---Some tiles allow you to claim neutral (white) buildings and place them on the board under your control. When you do so, you must either terraform the space to your home terrain using cubes or have a home terrain space already prepared for it. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edce7af1d2.68853824.jpg[/img] A neutral building's owner can be identified by the *terrain* on which it is built. Like normal buildings, they can contribute to the founding of a city and grant power when an opponent builds on an adjacent space.8maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer[blue]*New Element #5: Cult Tracks/Disciplines*[/blue]---This isn't really a new element - just a slight adjustment. Players need city keys in order to advance past the *7th* step on a Cult track/Discipline (see arrows). Multiple players may progress past this step on the same track. However, only one player may advance to the [red]*12th step.*[/red]9maintitlebar_content000cult_track_space_1_8 12 cult_track_space_1_12 1 cult_track_space_2_12 1 cult_track_space_3_12 1 cult_track_space_4_7 11 cult_track_space_4_12 1
Nekonyancer[red]Okay, that's it![/red] You can exit the tutorial and start playing now. Or, if you want, you can *continue* to see all the hard work I put into this tutorial. Oh! And then you can give me a 5-star rating at the end! Right? Right?! :D10maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer[red]If you're reading this, that means you don't know how to play Terra Mystica.[/red] I'll start explaining from the beginning. A game of *Age of Innovation* lasts six rounds. In each round, players will spend resources to help their faction expand across the map. Eventually, players will run out of resources and pass. They'll then gain income and start the next round.11maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerTo gain victory points, players will have to construct specific buildings at specific times. They can also arrange their buildings carefully to found cities, achieve scientific dominance on the Discipline tracks, and acquire powerful Innovation tiles. [green]At the end of the game, whoever has the most points wins![/green]12maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerBefore we start the game, we have to go through the *setup.* [blue]This involves two things:[/blue] *1.* Picking a faction package. *2.* Placing the faction's first two Workshops.13maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerYou should be able to see seven *packages* at the top of the screen. Each one contains: - 1 of 12 different *Factions.* - 1 of 7 *Home Terrains.* - 1 of 10 *Round Bonus Cards.* *Click on the Swamp-Felines package to see what's in it!*14player_name_11941354000
NekonyancerThis is a [blue]*Faction Card.*[/blue] The left side of the card indicates the faction's unique ability. The right side indicates the faction's starting disciplines (and sometimes other perks). [green][tip] You can hover over it for details![/green]15packageElementFaction000packageElementFaction 7
NekonyancerThis is a [red]*Home Terrain card.*[/red] It determines what kind of terrain we can construct buildings on. Each player will start with 15 gold and 3 tools, but their Home Terrain card will indicate some extra bonuses.16packageElementTerrain000packageElementTerrain 6
NekonyancerThis is [green]*Round Bonus Card.*[/green] Each one can grant resources, special actions, or victory points.17packageElementBonus000packageElementBonus 8
NekonyancerFeel free to examine all the different packages for a bit. *When you're ready, select the Swamp-Felines. Then click on [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] at the top!*18player_name_11941354010action_confirm 2
NekonyancerOkay! Next, we have to place two Workshops on the board, one at a time. We can only place them on spaces of our *Home Terrain* (Swamps). This looks like a good spot. *Click [red]here![/red] Then click on [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] at the top!*1terrain_space_clicker_G466b41d052582a10terrain_space_clicker_G4 1
NekonyancerOkay, now our opponent will place a Workshop.1terrain_space_clicker_G466b41d195661400
NekonyancerThey placed it right next to ours. Now that each player has 1 Workshop on the board, we'll start the second round of placements. This time, it will be done in *reverse turn order.* For example, if there were 3 players in the game, all the Workshops would be placed like this: *Player 1 - 2 - 3 - 3 - 2 - 1.*1terrain_space_clicker_H366b41d1ea4c9c00
NekonyancerThey placed their second Workshop near the top. Let's follow them! *Click [red]here[/red] to place our second Workshop. Then click on [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] at the top!*1terrain_space_clicker_B466b41d4b4af4510terrain_space_clicker_B4 1
Nekonyancer*Good!* But where did these Workshops come from? They came from our [red]*personal board,*[/red] which you'll find if you scroll down a little.1terrain_space_clicker_B466b41d803633400faction_player_11941354 6
NekonyancerThe bottom-left corner of our personal board has several rows of buildings. The Workshops we placed came from the bottom row. Specifically, they were on [blue]*these two slots.*[/blue] Each Workshop had an icon of a white cube in a hand under it. Hands always represent *income.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edceb18046.47914333.jpg[/img]2faction_player_1194135466b41d803633400dwelling_track_space1_11941354 2 dwelling_track_space2_11941354 2
NekonyancerWe'll get income from more than just our personal board! Our faction package came with [blue]*this bonus card,*[/blue] which includes 1 *book.* Each player will receive income at the [red]beginning of each round.[/red] We just started the first round!3bonus_card_566b41d803633400bonus_card_5 7
NekonyancerBGA already gave us our income of 3 tools. In the top-right corner, you can check our total resources: [blue]*6 tools,*[/blue] [green]*15 coins,*[/green] and [red]*1 scholar.*[/red] But we haven't received our book yet!4coins_count_1194135466b41d803633400workers_count_11941354 2 coins_count_11941354 3 priests_count_11941354 1
NekonyancerThat's because books come in four different colors. We need to tell BGA which color we want. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edced1bbe4.59533319.jpg[/img] *1.* Click on [blue]*"1 book"*[/blue] at the top. *2.* Click on the *"+"* button to select 1 *yellow* book. *3. [blue]Confirm!*[/blue] 5player_name_1194135466b41d803633410
NekonyancerOkay, we're finished with income! Next, players will take turns spending resources to perform actions. These actions include... - Terraform and Build. - Upgrade a Building. - Upgrade Sailing. - Upgrade Terraforming. - Develop an Innovation. - Assign a Scholar. - Perform a Special Action. [green]It sounds like a lot, but don't worry. Many of them are simple![/green]1maintitlebar_content66b41db2e642000
NekonyancerWe'll start with *Terraform & Build.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edcef310f2.27057999.jpg[/img] *Terraforming* means converting a space to our own home terrain. We can place a Workshop on it afterward!2maintitlebar_content66b41db2e642000
Nekonyancer[blue]To terraform a space, the space must be...[/blue] - *undeveloped* (no buildings on it yet). - of a *different terrain* (we can't terraform a Swamp into a Swamp). - within *Reach.* When it comes to *landlocked* spaces, only spaces that are adjacent to our buildings are within *Reach.* (More on Reach later!)3maintitlebar_content66b41db2e642000
NekonyancerGiven those requirements, we have [red]*many options*[/red] for the *Terraform & Build* action, but some are more expensive than others. To determine the cost, we must consult the *Terraforming Circle* in the top-left corner of our Personal Board.4terrain_space_clicker_F666b41db2e642000terrain_space_clicker_A5 6 terrain_space_clicker_B3 6 terrain_space_clicker_B5 6 terrain_space_clicker_C4 6 terrain_space_clicker_C5 6 terrain_space_clicker_F3 6 terrain_space_clicker_F4 6 terrain_space_clicker_G5 6 terrain_space_clicker_H4 6
NekonyancerThe *Terraforming Circle* depicts the seven terrain types *in order.* Whenever we play Age of Innovation, the circle will rotate so that our *home terrain* is at 12:00. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edcf1c0796.33694205.jpg[/img] Each terrain's distance from our home terrain determines how expensive it will be to terraform!5faction_name_1194135466b41db2e642000
Nekonyancer[blue]The costs are as follows:[/blue] *1 space away (adjacent):* 1 Spade. *2 space away:* 2 Spades. *3 spaces away:* 3 Spades. For us, *Plains* (brown) and *Lakes* (blue) are the closest to Swamps, so they cost the fewest Spades to terraform! [blue]So how do we get Spades?[/blue]6faction_player_1194135466b41db2e642000
NekonyancerWell, the simplest way is to buy them with Tools. Each Spade costs *1/2/3 Tools,* depending on our position on our Terraforming Track. We're currently on the [red]*bottom space*[/red] of the track, so each Spade will cost us 3 Tools.8exchange_track_space1_1194135466b41db2e642000exchange_track_space1_11941354 1
NekonyancerSpending 3 Tools on a Spade is pretty expensive, but we can make it cheaper. Just below our Terraforming Track, it shows that we can spend 5 Coins, 1 Tool, and 1 Scholar to *move up,* making Spades cost 2 Tools instead. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edcf38a439.19328348.jpg[/img] I know that image is low quality. Here's a high-quality one with yellow pieces: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edcf5377d4.00067575.jpg[/img] I'll use the high-quality images for the rest of the tutorial. Just pretend that the pieces are black, okay? :)9faction_player_1194135466b41db2e642000
NekonyancerIn addition to decreasing the Spade cost, we'll gain some small bonuses as we move up the Terraforming Track - books for the second step, points for the third - but it's still expensive. [green]I have a better idea.[/green]10exchange_track_space1_1194135466b41db2e642000
NekonyancerRemember our [red]*Bonus Card?*[/red] It has an orange octagon with a Spade on it! Orange octagons indicate *Special Action* spaces. We can spend a turn to activate it and gain the reward shown. This can only be done *once per space per round.*12bonus_card_566b41db2e642000bonus_card_5 6
NekonyancerWhen we activate it, we'll have to immediately use the Spade to terraform a space. That's because Spades are actually just effects, not resources. We can't hold onto them. *1.* Click on our Bonus Card. *2.* Select the indicated space. *3.* Click on [blue]*"Confirm"*[/blue] at the top!13bonus_card_566b41db2e642010terrain_space_clicker_F4 18 bonus_card_5 17
Nekonyancer*Excellent!* We terraformed the *Plains* into a *Swamp!* An [red]*X token*[/red] was placed on the Special Action space to show that it can't be used again.1terrain_space_clicker_F466b41de6e89e200action_token_bc_5 1
NekonyancerIf you recall, the action we're learning about is *"Terraform & Build."* That means we can build a Workshop as part of the same action, if we want.2terrain_space_clicker_F466b41de6e89e200
NekonyancerThe costs for each building are shown on our Personal Board. Workshops cost *1 Tool* and *2 Gold* each. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edcf756992.87731273.jpg[/img]3terrain_space_clicker_F466b41de6e89e200
NekonyancerLet's do it! *Click on [blue]"Build"[/blue] and [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] at the top!*4terrain_space_clicker_F466b41de6e89e210action_confirm 2
Nekonyancer*Great!* We placed our third Workshop, uncovering another *income* icon on our board. That's it for our main action. If we want, we can do some Conversions as free actions before we end our turn. We'll get into that stuff later. *Click on [blue]"Don't use"[/blue] at the top to end our turn.*1terrain_space_clicker_F466b41dec1ceac10action_skip 2
NekonyancerNext turn! Let's learn about *upgrading buildings.* We can spend a turn to upgrade 1 building 1 step, according to this chart: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edcf9bb441.66093753.jpg[/img]1terrain_space_clicker_G466b41dfc08ec900
NekonyancerRight now, we only have *Workshops* on the board. Workshops upgrade into *Guilds.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edcfb95f13.58768227.jpg[/img]2terrain_space_clicker_G466b41dfc08ec900
NekonyancerThe cost to upgrade to a Guild is shown on our Personal Board... [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edcfd4c594.85180305.jpg[/img] It costs *2 Tools* and *6 Coins.* However, if the space is adjacent to an opponent's building, the cost is reduced to *2 Tools* and *3 Coins!*3faction_player_1194135466b41dfc08ec900
NekonyancerIt's usually a good idea to go for the discount. *1.* Select [red]*this space,*[/red] which is adjacent to an opponent's building. *2.* Click on [blue]*Confirm*[/blue] at the top!4terrain_space_clicker_G466b41dfc08ec910action_confirm 2 terrain_space_clicker_G4 1
Nekonyancer*Good!* Now we have a *Guild* on the board!1terrain_space_clicker_G466b423429d0cb00
NekonyancerIf you scroll down, you'll see that the *Workshop* we replaced went back onto our Personal Board, covering up an income icon. That's okay though, because our new *Guild* uncovered another one, which will give us 1 Power and 2 Coins.2faction_player_1194135466b423429d0cb00
NekonyancerSpeaking of Power, that discount of 3 coins came with a [red]downside.[/red] Whenever a player *Builds* or *Upgrades* on a space that is adjacent to an opponent's buildings, that opponent has the option of paying [green]Victory Points[/green] for [red]Power.[/red]3terrain_space_clicker_G466b423429d0cb00
NekonyancerThe amount of *Power* gained is equal to the *Power Values* (PV) of the opponent's buildings. Workshops: 1 PV. Guilds and Schools: 2 PV. Palaces and Universities: 3 PV. The cost in [green]Victory Points[/green] is always 1 less than the amount of Power gained.4terrain_space_clicker_G466b423429d0cb00
NekonyancerIn this case, we upgraded a building that is next to our opponent's Workshop, which has a PV of 1. Therefore, our opponent may gain *1 Power* at the cost of [green]0 Victory Points.[/green] Since it's free, BGA will simply give them the Power without asking. [red]So what is Power, anyway?[/red]5terrain_space_clicker_G466b423429d0cb00
NekonyancerEach player has [red]*3 bowls of Power*[/red] in the bottom-right corner of their Personal Board. We started the game with 3 Power Tokens in Bowl I, 9 in Bowl II, and 0 in Bowl III.6faction_supply_bowl3_1194135466b423429d0cb00faction_supply_bowl1_11941354 6 faction_supply_bowl2_11941354 6 faction_supply_bowl3_11941354 6
NekonyancerWhenever a player gains Power, they must move that many tokens from Bowl *I* to Bowl *II.* If Bowl *I* is empty, they instead move tokens from *II* to *III.* [green]Tokens in Bowl III can be used on extra actions or converted into extra resources![/green]7faction_supply_bowl3_1194135466b423429d0cb00
NekonyancerTo summarize, we upgraded a [red]*building*[/red] that was next to our opponent's [blue]*Workshop,*[/blue] which has a PV of *1.* They therefore gained 1 Power and paid 0 Victory Points, moving 1 token from Bowl *I* to Bowl *II.*8faction_supply_bowl2_9214348766b423429d0cb00terrain_space_clicker_G4 1 terrain_space_clicker_H3 2
NekonyancerHey, our opponent just did the same thing! They upgraded a [blue]*building*[/blue] that's next to one of [red]*ours!*[/red] In this case, our building is a [red]*Guild,*[/red] with a PV of 2, so we have the option of paying [green]1 Victory Point[/green] for *2 Power.* We want all the power we can get! *Click on [blue]"Accept"[/blue] at the top!*1terrain_space_clicker_G566b42355d781410action_accept 2 terrain_space_clicker_G4 6 terrain_space_clicker_H3 7
NekonyancerNext, I'll explain [red]*scoring cards.*[/red] There are six of them laid out along the left edge of the board, one for each round.1terrain_space_clicker_G466b423653505b00scoring_tile_holder_1 6 scoring_tile_holder_2 6 scoring_tile_holder_3 6 scoring_tile_holder_4 6 scoring_tile_holder_5 6 scoring_tile_holder_6 6
NekonyancerThe one at the bottom is for *Round 1.* If you *hover* over it with your mouse, you can read what the icons indicate. Hmm, we'll gain [green]5 points[/green] if we build a Palace or University this round!2scoring_tile_holder_166b423653505b00
NekonyancerWe can't actually *Build* a palace. Instead, we have to *Upgrade* a Guild into one. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edcff3df97.28627521.jpg[/img]3scoring_tile_holder_166b423653505b00
NekonyancerUnfortunately, Upgrading to a Palace costs 4 Tools and 6 Coins. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edd01c2c22.60237551.jpg[/img] [red]We only have 3 Tools![/red]4workers_count_1194135466b423653505b00workers_count_11941354 1
NekonyancerFortunately, there's a way to get more. There are [red]*9 Special Action spaces*[/red] across the bottom of the board. We've already learned that each Special Action can only be used once per round. These ones are on the board though, and can be accessed by *all* players. [red]When you play your first real game, you can expect some competition for them![/red]5power_action_clicker_366b423653505b00power_action_clicker_1 6 power_action_clicker_2 6 power_action_clicker_3 6 power_action_clicker_4 6 power_action_clicker_5 6 power_action_clicker_6 6 knowledge_action_clicker_1 6 knowledge_action_clicker_2 6 knowledge_action_clicker_3 6
NekonyancerEach space also has a *cost.* The three on the left cost *Books.* The six on the right cost *Power.* The space we're interested in now costs 4 Power for 2 Tools.6power_action_clicker_366b423653505b00
NekonyancerRemember, only Power Tokens in Bowl III can be used. We currently have... *0.* :( But don't worry! We can use [red]*this space*[/red] to pay 1 Book for 5 Power. *Click on [red]this space.[/red] Then [blue]"Continue"[/blue] and [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] at the top!*7knowledge_action_clicker_166b423653505b10knowledge_action_clicker_1 6
Nekonyancer*Excellent!* Before using the action, we had 1 token in Bowl I and the rest of our tokens in Bowl II. When we gained the 5 Power, the token in Bowl I moved to Bowl II, then 4 tokens moved from II to III. [red]We now have 4 usable Power Tokens![/red]1faction_supply_bowl3_1194135466b42b23419e800
NekonyancerNext turn! We have enough power now! *Click on [red]this Action space.[/red] [blue]Confirm[/blue] your action at the top!*1power_action_clicker_366b42b41e946510action_confirm 2 power_action_clicker_3 6
NekonyancerOur opponent ran out of resources (or decided they didn't want to spend any more) and *passed.* That means they can't take any more actions for the rest of the round.1player_board_9214348766b42b7ea81f900
NekonyancerWhen a player passes, they must move their player marker from their bonus card to an unused one. They used to be on [red]*this one,*[/red] but they switched to [blue]*this one.*[/blue] BGA put a big [red]*1*[/red] over their new card to show that they were the first player to pass in this round. This will determine the *turn order* for next round!2bonus_card_166b42b7ea81f900bonus_card_1 7 bonus_card_4 6
NekonyancerWe're not going to pass just yet. We have enough Tools to upgrade to a Palace, remember? *Click on our [red]Guild.[/red] Click on [blue]"To Palace"[/blue] at the top. [blue]Confirm![/blue]*3terrain_space_clicker_G466b42b7ea81f910terrain_space_clicker_G4 1
NekonyancerWhen a player Upgrades to a Palace, they can choose a *Palace Tile* that they will have for the rest of the game. BGA prepared a supply of Palace Tiles at the beginning of the game. The number of tiles is equal to the number of players + 2. [red]*This tile*[/red] will always be one of them. The others are random.1stronghold_tile_266b42b96499cd00stronghold_tile_1 1
NekonyancerAs usual, you can hover over the tiles to see descriptions of the iconography. When you're ready, *select [red]this tile.[/red]*2stronghold_tile_466b42b96499cd10stronghold_tile_4 6
Nekonyancer*Great!* The tile we selected went into the [red]*Palace slot*[/red] on our Personal Board. We gained [green]5 points[/green] because of the [blue]*Round Scoring Tile.*[/blue] Unfortunately, our opponent got more power because our Palace was placed next to an opponent's building, but this was definitely still worth it for us! :)1exchange_track_space1_1194135466b42bad1567500scoring_tile_holder_1 7 stronghold_clicker_11941354 6
NekonyancerThe tile we selected has a Special Action space that lets us upgrade a Workshop into a Guild for free. We should try to use it every round, if possible. *Click [blue]here[/blue] to use the action. NekonyancerThere's more I have to explain regarding the [blue]*Scoring Tiles.*[/blue] We already took advantage of the *left side* of this round's tile, scoring 5 points for building a Palace. The *right side* indicates bonus resources that each player will receive at the end of the round, depending on their progress in a certain *Discipline.*1scoring_tile_holder_166b42bed84fe300scoring_tile_holder_1 7 scoring_tile_holder_2 7 scoring_tile_holder_3 7 scoring_tile_holder_4 7 scoring_tile_holder_5 7 scoring_tile_holder_6 7 priests_count_11941354 1
NekonyancerThe *Disciplines* are the four big tracks on this board, called the *Science Board.* From left to right, the Disciplines are Banking, Law, Engineering, and Medicine.2cult_track_space_2_1266b42bed84fe300
NekonyancerEach player started the game with different ranks in the Disciplines. We started with 1 rank in Banking and 1 in Medicine. Our opponent started with 2 in Medicine. Since this is a 2-player game, some [blue]neutral pieces[/blue] were placed on the board as well.3aircult_token_9214348766b42bed84fe300
NekonyancerAccording to this round's [blue]*Scoring Tile,*[/blue] we'll gain 1 tool for every two ranks we have in Medicine at the end of the round. [green]We really need more tools, so rising in Medicine this round is definitely a good idea![/green]4scoring_tile_holder_166b42bed84fe300scoring_tile_holder_1 7
NekonyancerOne way to rise in a Discipline is to place a *Scholar* on one of the slots under a track. Each slot has a number on it, showing how many ranks we will rise. The Scholar will occupy the slot forever. Once all the slots are filled, players will still be able to send Scholars, but they'll only gain 1 rank per Scholar.5cult_order_space_2_166b42bed84fe300
Nekonyancer*Click [red]here[/red] to place a Scholar. Then [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] your action at the top.*6cult_order_space_4_166b42bed84fe310action_confirm 2 cult_order_space_4_1 1
Nekonyancer*Great!* We now have four ranks in Medicine, so we'll gain two extra Tools at the end of the round. In addition, we passed this icon... [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edd0386f02.31119518.jpg[/img] ... gaining 1 Power!1aircult_token_1194135466b42c0f8f48400
NekonyancerOkay, I don't think we want to do anything else this round, so we should pass. Our opponent passed a while ago, so when we do, all players will have passed, and the round will end. *Click on [blue]"Pass!"[/blue] Then [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] your action!*1action_pass66b42c78810d210action_pass 2
NekonyancerAs you briefly saw earlier, when a player passes, they must move their player marker from one Bonus Card to another. [red]*This card*[/red] will give us 4 Power and 2 Coins. There's an extra Coin on it because no one picked it at the beginning of the game. [red]*Take the card!*[/red]1bonus_card_366b42c89afb4a10bonus_card_3 6
Nekonyancer[green]Okay, now we'll start Round 2![/green] Each player received income from their *hand* icons, as well as from the Scoring Tile. All the "X"s on used Special Action spaces were removed, so they can be used again.1ce67836a-181b-4c83-83e6-9c6b198e97c466b42cca2624700
NekonyancerAn extra Coin should have been placed on each of [red]*these three bonus cards*[/red] because no one chose them. Sometimes games don't work quite right in Tutorial mode. Don't worry, it will work when you play a real game.2bonus_token_9214348766b42cca2624700bonus_card_2 1 bonus_card_3 1 bonus_card_4 1
NekonyancerOur opponent will go first this round because they *passed* first last round!3pagemaintitletext66b42cca2624700
Nekonyancer[blue]Time for our first turn of the new round.[/blue] Did you notice [red]*this space*[/red] earlier? Since it's already of our *Home Terrain* (Swamps), we won't have to worry about Terraforming costs. We can build on it very cheaply.1terrain_space_clicker_E666b4320ecd93500terrain_space_clicker_E6 1
Nekonyancer[blue]Unfortunately, it's out of Reach![/blue] One way to reach it would be to build a [red]*Bridge*[/red] across the river, making the spaces on either side *adjacent.*2terrain_space_clicker_E666b4320ecd93500bridge_clicker_12 1
NekonyancerThere's a [red]*Special Action space*[/red] that will allow us to place a bridge for 3 Power. *Click on the [red]action.[/red] Place a bridge [blue]here.[/blue] Then [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] your action at the top!*3terrain_space_clicker_E666b4320ecd93510bridge_clicker_12 2 power_action_clicker_1 1
NekonyancerNow that the spaces are adjacent, we can build a Workshop here! *Click [red]here.[/red] Then [blue]"Confirm."[/blue]*1terrain_space_clicker_E666b432a36d9ea10terrain_space_clicker_E6 1
NekonyancerNext, let's upgrade our new Workshop to a Guild with our Palace's Special Action! *Scroll down and click [green]here.[/green] Then select [red]this space.[/red]*3terrain_space_clicker_E666b432b09f31b10terrain_space_clicker_E6 1 stronghold_clicker_11941354 3
Nekonyancer[blue]Next, do you remember what our Faction's unique ability is?[/blue] We'll get some extra bonuses whenever we *found a city.* You can read the details by hovering over our [red]*Faction Card.*[/red]1faction_tile_clicker_1194135466b4334a3a48700faction_tile_clicker_11941354 6
NekonyancerTo found a city, we must create a group of at least *4* adjacent buildings with a combined Power Value of at least *7.* [blue]We have enough Power Value...[/blue] Palace (3) + Guild (2) + Guild (2) = 7 [blue]... but we only have 3 buildings.[/blue]2terrain_space_clicker_E666b4334a3a48700
NekonyancerTo get our fourth building, let's terraform and build on [red]*this space.*[/red] Last round, we terraformed by gaining a Spade from the Special Action on our Bonus card... [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edd05ace66.39115364.jpg[/img]... but we don't have that card anymore.3terrain_space_clicker_E766b4334a3a48700terrain_space_clicker_E7 1
NekonyancerAs I mentioned before, we can always buy a Spade for 3 Tools (according to our position on our Terraforming Track), but we don't want to do that. Tools are too precious.4exchange_track_space1_1194135466b4334a3a48700
NekonyancerWait a second! We can get a Spade from [red]*this Action Space*[/red] instead! It will cost 4 Power. Ugh! We only have 2 Power Tokens in Bowl III!6power_action_clicker_566b4334a3a48700power_action_clicker_5 6
NekonyancerHmm... there's a specific kind of [green]*Conversion*[/green] that can give us the Power we need. *Click on [green]Conversions[/green] at the top. Then continue.*7player_name_1194135466b4334a3a48700action_convert 3
Nekonyancer[blue]The top menu shows that we can convert...[/blue] 5 Power --> 1 Scholar. 3 Power --> 1 Tool. 1 Power --> 1 Coin. 1 Scholar --> 1 Tool. 1 Tool --> 1 Coin. [blue]The bottom menu shows that we can convert...[/blue] 5 Power --> 1 Book (any color) 1 Book (any color) --> 1 Coin. These conversions can be done at any time during our turn, as often as we like.9player_name_1194135466b4334a3a48700
NekonyancerThe conversion we need right now is a little different. Next to the top menu, it shows that we can *permanently destroy* a Power Token in Bowl II to move another Token from Bowl II to Bowl III. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edd0826568.58712188.jpg[/img]10player_name_1194135466b4334a3a48700
NekonyancerI'm not sure if it's a good idea so early in the game, but let's do it anyway, so you can see how it works. *Click on the box twice. The box should say "x2."* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edd09e4ef8.37149122.jpg[/img] *Scroll down and click on [blue]"Done."[/blue] Then continue.*11player_name_1194135466b4334a3a48700
NekonyancerIf you did that correctly, then we should now have 4 Power Tokens in Bowl III, which is enough to use this Special Action! *Select [green]this action.[/green] Then select [red]this space.[/red] [blue]Confirm![/blue]*12power_action_clicker_566b4334a3a48710terrain_space_clicker_E7 1 power_action_clicker_5 3
Nekonyancer*Good! Now [blue]Build[/blue] a Workshop! [blue]Confirm![/blue]*1terrain_space_clicker_E766b4338d5e46710
NekonyancerWe now have 4 adjacent buildings with a combined PV of at least 7. That means we successfully *founded a city!* Whenever a player founds a city, they must choose one of the available *City Tiles* and place it somewhere in their new city. It doesn't matter where. Each tile provides different rewards, but *all* of them have a *key.* *Select [green]this tile.[/green] Place it [red]here.[/red] [blue]Confirm![/blue]*1town_tile_1266b43391146f510town_tile_12 3 terrain_space_clicker_G4 1
Nekonyancer[blue]Founding a city triggered our Faction ability![/blue] We get 3 Discipline advancements and 1 Book! *1.* Click on [blue]*"1 book."*[/blue] *2.* Click on the "+" to select a *yellow* book. *3. [blue]Confirm![/blue]*1terrain_space_clicker_G466b433fa62c5910
NekonyancerNow for the Discipline advancements. According to this round's [red]*Scoring Tile,*[/red] we'll earn 1 Tool for every 2 ranks in Banking, so let's put everything in Banking! *Click on [blue]"+3 Science!"[/blue] Click on [blue]"+1 Banking!"[/blue]*1scoring_tile_holder_266b4344c34c7610scoring_tile_holder_2 6
NekonyancerAgain! [blue]*+2 Science, +1 Banking!*[/blue]1scoring_tile_holder_266b4345bcbf4910
NekonyancerLast time! [blue]*+1 Science, +1 Banking!*[/blue]1scoring_tile_holder_266b434676541b10
NekonyancerExcellent! We have four ranks in Banking now. But what about that [red]*key*[/red] that came with the city? Well, each key allows us to progress past the *7th* rank in a single Discipline. To get past 7 in a second Discipline, we'll need another key from another city.1available_keys_icon_1194135466b4346ade00800ak_11941354 1
NekonyancerWhile we're examining the upper echelons of the Disciplines, note that the [red]*9th rank*[/red] in each Discipline grants *income* for all future rounds. The [green]*12th ranks*[/green] look special because only one player is allowed reach each one. In other words, after one player reaches the 12th rank of a discipline, that space is blocked to all other players.2cult_track_space_2_966b4346ade00800cult_track_space_1_9 6 cult_track_space_1_12 3 cult_track_space_2_9 6 cult_track_space_2_12 3 cult_track_space_3_9 6 cult_track_space_3_12 3 cult_track_space_4_9 6 cult_track_space_4_12 3
NekonyancerLet's move on. We've gotten quite a lot done this round, but we still have 3 Tools and 5 Coins left. That's just enough to upgrade a Guild into a *School.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edd0bbe3a0.01840665.jpg[/img]1workers_count_1194135466b4346d2cb9c00
Nekonyancer*Select [red]this space.[/red] Click on [blue]"To School"[/blue] at the top! [blue]Confirm![/blue]*2terrain_space_clicker_F466b4346d2cb9c10terrain_space_clicker_F4 1
NekonyancerWhenever we upgrade to a school, we can acquire a *Competency Tile!* At the beginning of the game, BGA randomly placed the 12 stacks of Competency Tiles in 12 slots. Each tile provides a different bonus, and each slot provides a different combination of Books and Discipline ranks.1favor_tile_466b43474ce99000
NekonyancerHover over [red]*this tile*[/red] and read the description. It can help us found cities more easily, which is particularly good for our faction! Hmm... maybe we'll get that one with our second school. First, I want to get more income.2favor_tile_1666b43474ce99000favor_tile_16 1
Nekonyancer[red]*This tile*[/red] has a Special Action on it that grants 4 Power. That's almost as good as income! We'll just have to spend a turn to use it each round. In addition, the tile's slot will give us 2 more ranks and a Book in Banking. 2 more Banking ranks means 1 more Tool at the end of the round. *Select [red]this tile![/red]*3favor_tile_866b43474ce99010favor_tile_8 1
Nekonyancer*Okay!* From here on out, it's more of the same. We get more resources, we expand, we get points. There are just a few more mechanics to explain. I wasn't able to squeeze them into the gameplay.1terrain_space_clicker_E766b43c7778ddb00
NekonyancerLet's start with [blue]*Sailing.*[/blue] Earlier, we expanded to a space that was out of *reach* by building a bridge. The other way to extend our reach is to advance on our [blue]*Sailing Track,*[/blue] which is in the top-left corner of our Personal Board.2faction_player_1194135466b43c7778ddb00
NekonyancerA space is considered *in reach* if it is separated from one of our buildings by a number of river tiles that is equal to or less than our Sailing Value. For example, [red]*this space*[/red] is two river tiles away from our [green]*Workshop.*[/green] Our Sailing Value is currently 0. If we increase it to 2, we can build [red]*here!*[/red]3terrain_space_clicker_B866b43c7778ddb00terrain_space_clicker_B7 1 terrain_space_clicker_C7 7 terrain_space_clicker_D7 7 terrain_space_clicker_E7 3
NekonyancerThere's an important difference between reaching a new space by *bridge* and by *sailing.* If we build a [blue]*bridge*[/blue] to [red]*this space*[/red] and build there, it will be *adjacent* to our existing city, making it a little bigger. There's no bonus for making a city bigger.4terrain_space_clicker_E666b43c7778ddb00terrain_space_clicker_D4 1 bridge_clicker_11 2
NekonyancerIf we *SAIL* there instead, it will *NOT* be adjacent, and will *NOT* be considered part of our existing city. We can then build up on the other side of the river until it forms a new city in its own right, giving us another valuable *City Tile.*5terrain_space_clicker_E666b43c7778ddb00bridge_clicker_11 13
NekonyancerI know it's hard to see, but the 2nd rank on the Sailing Track also grants 2 points, the 3rd rank grants 2 Books, and the last rank grants 4 points. Each advancement costs 4 Coins and 1 Scholar. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edd0d700b8.01813229.jpg[/img]6shipping_track_space3_1194135466b43c7778ddb00
NekonyancerNext, I'll explain the [red]*University,*[/red] which must be upgraded from a School. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edd107ba73.22861575.jpg[/img] When we gain the University, we immediately gain a Competency Tile, just like when we build a school.7struct_3666b43c7778ddb00struct_36 1
NekonyancerOnce we have the University, we will only require *3* adjacent buildings to found a city, instead of 4.8sanctuary_track_space1_1194135466b43c7778ddb00
NekonyancerNext, [red]*Innovation Tiles.*[/red] At the beginning of the game, BGA will randomly prepare *6/8/10/12* tiles for a *2/3/4/5* player game. There are 18 tiles in all, so you won't see the same tiles in every game.9invention_tiles_supply66b43c7778ddb00invention_tiles_supply 6
NekonyancerTo acquire an Innovation Tile, players must spend a turn and pay 5 Books, plus 5 Coins if they do not have a Palace yet. Depending on the slot the Innovation Tile is in, some books will have to be of specific disciplines too. For example, [red]*this tile*[/red] requires two of the Books to be in Medicine.10invention_tiles_supply66b43c7778ddb00invention_tile_4 1
NekonyancerEach player has [red]*3 slots*[/red] for Innovation Tiles on their Personal Board. Filling the 2nd slot requires an additional Book. Filling the 3rd requires an additional 2 Books.11faction_player_9214348766b43c7778ddb00innovation_track_space1_11941354 1 innovation_track_space2_11941354 1 innovation_track_space3_11941354 1
NekonyancerSome Innovation Tiles, like [red]*this one,*[/red] allow us to claim *Neutral buildings* and place them on the board under our control. When we do so, we must either terraform the space to our Home Terrain using Tools or have a Home Terrain space already prepared for it.12invention_tile_566b43c7778ddb00invention_tile_5 1
NekonyancerAlso, remember that there will be [blue]Neutral markers[/blue] on the Science Board in 2-player games. During [blue]*Science Scoring,*[/blue] those markers can prevent players from scoring points!13cult_scoring_tooltip66b43c7778ddb00cult_scoring_tooltip 2
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edd1286db6.00832457.jpg[/img] A neutral building's owner can be identified by the *terrain* on which it is built. Like normal buildings, they can contribute to the founding of a city and grant power when an opponent builds on an adjacent space.14invention_tile_566b43c7778ddb00
NekonyancerAs you approach the end of the game (the end of the 6th round), you should start thinking about [red]*Area Scoring*[/red] and [blue]*Science Scoring!*[/blue] You can hover over them with your mouse to read the details. "Directly or indirectly adjacent" means within *Reach.* If you can Sail there, it counts as indirectly adjacent.15cult_scoring_tooltip66b43c7778ddb00area_scoring_tooltip 1 cult_scoring_tooltip 2
NekonyancerPoints for Area scoring and Science scoring are awarded at the end of the 6th round. All of each player's extra resources are then converted into Coins. Every 5 Coins are worth 1 extra point. [green]Whoever has the most points wins![/green]16area_scoring_2p_tile_uid66b43c7778ddb00
Nekonyancer[blue]One last thing:[/blue] if you don't want BGA to arrange Faction packages in your game, you can toggle *"Drafting"* in the lobby options! In the *Drafting* variant, BGA will lay out Faction, Palace, and Home Terrain tiles. Players will then take turns taking tiles until each player has one of each kind. Finally, BGA will lay out Round Bonus Cards for players to draft.17maintitlebar_content66b43c7778ddb00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Age of Innovation!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! Big thank yous go out to *Helge Ostertag* for designing this game, *Feuerland Spiele* for publishing, and *Rincevent123* for bringing it to BGA! Have fun! :D18maintitlebar_content66b43c7778ddb00
