Scribal[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d29cfdac5479.48022944.jpg[/img] The deep waters of the Oceans are hiding many secrets and unknown forms of life. For centuries the Great Kingdoms of Aquatica have been building their world and managing to grow and prosper. Now, their resources are exhausted, and they are forced to explore the Ocean Depths in search of new resources.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
ScribalIn Aquatica, you'll be playing as one of the Great Kingdoms, working to expand your kingdom by recruiting characters, conquering or purchasing locations, plumbing the depths of those locations, and completing goals. [blue][tip] We recommend completing this 58 step tutorial on a large screened device.[/blue]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
ScribalYou should see the main board on the left side of your screen with your player board to the right of it. Your hand of cards is below your player board and your 4 starting (trained) *Mantas* are to the right of the board. If you aren't seeing that, click the left magnifying glass in the top right corner to zoom out. This will make navigating the tutorial easier.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Scribal[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img691d4b97161804.62853132.jpg[/img] The main board has 3 rows for cards. [red]The bottom row are the *Ocean Character* cards.[/red] [green]The middle row of cards are the *Location* cards.[/green] Those two rows have draw piles on either side, showing how many cards are left in the stack. If either of those piles run out, that will trigger the end of the game. This is unlikely in a game with the starting goals. The top row starts empty.5overall_player_board_96564609000
ScribalThe final end game trigger happens when a player completes the [red]4 goals[/red]. We'll look at the goals more closely later in the tutorial.6goal-4000goal-mantas-1 1 goal-mantas-2 1 goal-mantas-3 1 goal-mantas-4 1
ScribalBGA picked us to be the first player. Let's start by conquering our first *Location*. We start with 2 cards that will allow us to conquer locations: the *Legioner* and the *Sea Horse*. As it has additional actions associated with it, we'll look at the Sea Horse later. Select the *Legioner*, the card furthest to the right in our hand.7character-20-front010
ScribalThere are 6 location cards. Let's conquer the 5th card from the left. Select this card and then click *Conquer a Location* at the top. [blue][tip] The 4th location is greyed out because we don't have the *Power* to conquer it.[/blue]1location-47-front67c90af49fe0a10
ScribalBGA slid the card into our player board for us, stopping at the top bubble (*Depth*), which represents a resource or action we'll be able to use later. The *Location Row* does not refill automatically. Let's take a closer look at that location card.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67c90b45c8a8700
Scribal[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d29d0039f733.90980661.jpg[/img] At the top of the card, we have [red]the cost of the card[/red], to either *Conquer* or *Purchase* the location. This card costs either [red]3 tridents (*Power*) or 3 coins.[/red]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67c90b45c8a8700
Scribal[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d29d019203a6.13080834.jpg[/img] [green]Across the bottom, every card will have either 2 or 3 icons.[/green] The left icon shows this card will earn us 3 *Prosperity Points* when we score it. The icon on the right tells us which of the 4 location types it is. The icon in the middle shows us which *Wild Manta* we'll collect when we fully raise this card. Not all cards have one.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67c90b45c8a8700
Scribal[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d29d02cf0fd3.22696087.jpg[/img] Finally, let's take a look at the [red]3 *Depths* on the left[/red]. As we explore (*Raise*) the location, we'll be able to use or boost other actions. The treasure chest lets us score a fully raised *Location*. We'll need another card to *Raise* it past the second *Depth*. The third bubble let's us *Raise* another card 1 *Depth*.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67c90b45c8a8700
ScribalYou always have the option of completing a goal during your turn. We don't currently have a goal we can complete, so click *End turn*.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67c90b45c8a8710
ScribalLet's *Buy a Location*. Click the Sealord.1character-19-front67c90ba55e47c10
ScribalPlaying the *Sealord* gave us 1 coin. All of the locations are greyed out because we don't have enough coins to buy any of them.1location-23-front67c90bce78a2d00
ScribalOur single location won't give us any coins. Step 15/582location-47-front67c90bce78a2d00
ScribalThis *Trained Manta* will give us a coin, though. Click on it to get a second coin.3manta-27-front67c90bce78a2d10
Scribal4 of the remaining *Locations* are available to purchase. Let's buy the 3rd location so that we can have another source of coins available to us in the future. Click it and then click *Buy a Location* at the top.1location-7-front67c90be54efb310
ScribalOur opponent chose to *Scout* which moved the remaining locations into the top row and refilled the *Location* row. Locations that have been scouted and moved to the top row require 1 less *Power* to *Conquer*, but they do not get a purchase discount.1player_board_9656460967c90cd776cbb00
ScribalIt's time to *Recruit a Character*. Click on the *Blue Water's Agent*.3character-22-front67c90cd776cbb10
ScribalThe *Blue Water's Agent* doesn't provide us with any coins, but that's okay. The leftmost character is always free to recruit. Click on the *Healer*. [blue][tip] The row of *Ocean Characters* refills at the end of your turn.[/blue]1character-6-front67c90cfce0db810
ScribalLet's play the *Healer* to use a card in our discard pile. It costs 1 coin to do that and unfortunately we'll need to over pay it as the only resource available to us is 2 coins. Click the *Healer*.1character-6-front67c90ea42e39410
ScribalThe *Manta* we used last time is still exhausted, but we do have this location we can get coins from. Click the location to *Raise* it.1location-7-front67c90f41a1e7910
ScribalIf we had another *Location* or *Manta* that would provide us coins, we could use them here, but we don't need any more coins. [blue][tip] We can only raise each location once per action, so if it had multiple depths with coins, we could only use the top one.[/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67c90f4b2bf4800
ScribalClick *Confirm*.2btnConfirm67c90f4b2bf4810
ScribalLet's *Conquer* another *Location*. Click the *Legioner* to use it again.1character-20-front67c90f4fcbf0210
ScribalWe have 3 *Power*. Let's use another *Trained Manta* to increase our power. Click the top right *Manta*.1manta-26-front67c90f569c1b610
ScribalYou may have noticed the locations that were available to us before flipping the *Manta* are now greyed out. After we add power, or coins, we won't be able to conquer, or buy, those cheaper locations. Increasing power, or coins, is mostly achieved through by raising cards, which gets it closer to scoring. You can not choose to over pay to score a card more quickly.1location-33-front67c90f6b2f3d000
ScribalClick on the left location to *Conquer* it.2board-locations-167c90f6b2f3d010
ScribalLet's play the *Sea Horse*.1character-21-front67c90fe1cd21010
ScribalThe *Sea Horse* allows us to *Scout* and then *Conquer* a location. Click *Scout* at the top. Step 30/581player_board_9656460967c90fef4e40010
ScribalWhen we scouted, the top row of cards was discarded, the remaining cards in the *Location row* was moved up to the top row and 6 new *Locations* came out. [blue][tip] If there had been more than 4 cards in the *Location row*, we would have chosen which cards to discard so there would be room for 6 new *Location* cards.[/blue]1character-21-front67c90ff35f9a600
ScribalWe have 1 *Power* which isn't enough to *Conquer* any of the available locations. Click the bottom left *Manta*. This will give us 2 additional power in any location with a shark fin on it.2manta-25-front67c90ff35f9a610
ScribalWe now have 2 locations we can *Conquer*. Of the 2, the *Location* in the top row is worth more points if we can score it by the end of the game, so let's take that one. Click the right location in the top row. Don't forget to click *Conquer* at the top.1location-52-front67c91004a59d110
ScribalOur opponent just retrieved their cards, and I think it's a good time for us to do that, too. Let's play *Matrona*.1character-23-front67c9105e3f5dd10
ScribalPlaying *Matrona* allowed us to pick up our discarded cards, flipped our *Mantas* over so they can all be used and because we are playing a 2 player game, the leftmost card was discarded from the *Ocean Character* row.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67c91098a214500
ScribalWe are almost done with this tutorial. We've been working toward one of the 4 goals and we'll score that this turn, as well as scoring a location. Click on the *Legioner* so we can *Conquer* a final location.1character-20-front67c9112243b6510
ScribalI want to *Conquer* the location on the right, but we are 4 *Power* short. With what you've learned, how can we make up that difference?1player_board_9656460967c9119439a6700
ScribalI hope you said that we could flip a *Manta* and *Raise a Location*! This *Location* has a shark fin and in our kingdom we have 2 items that will each give us 2 additional power for that location.2location-37-front67c9119439a6700
ScribalClick this location to *Raise* it for 2 power.3location-7-front67c9119439a6710
ScribalClick this *Manta* for the remaining 2 *Power*.1manta-25-front67c911b537f1710
ScribalNow that we have 7 *Power*, only one *Location* is lit up. Let's *Conquer* our 5th *Location*.1location-37-front67c911b665d1d10
ScribalWe've just placed our 5th *Location* on our player board, satisfying the requirements for this goal. Click on the flashing goal.1goal-4-front67c911c45a15e10
ScribalTo show that we've completed the goal, we need to place one of our *Trained Manta*. For each goal, you can select any of your 4 starting Manta and we'll lose its ability for the rest of the game. Click on the top left *Manta* to finish scoring this goal which will earn us 8 points.1manta-27-front67c911d42c85310
ScribalYou can claim multiple goals on your turn. Unfortunately, we don't have any more goals available to us. We can score a location, though.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67c911f8a7d5000
ScribalClick this location to *Raise* it. Step 45/582location-47-front67c911f8a7d5010
ScribalWe only have 1 fully risen *Location*. Click it to score it.1location-7-front67c91203bee6410
ScribalFinally, let's use this last *Manta* to raise a location.1manta-24-front67c9120832c4f10
ScribalNormally, when you raise a location with the *Manta* or a character card, you'll do this to bypass an empty bubble, but you can use the *Raise* symbol, like what was on the *Manta* to *Raise any location*, but you won't get the benefit listed at that *Depth*.1location-47-front67c9121fe3ec500
ScribalClick the left location to *Raise* it.2location-47-front67c9121fe3ec510
ScribalAt this point, we could *Raise* the left location again, using its ability to *Raise* another location. That would give us a purple (Wild) Manta and change the available ability of 1 other location on our player board, but I didn't do that when recording this play.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67c912213865800
ScribalBefore finishing this tutorial, there are a few other things I should cover. Let's first look at the other 3 pre-printed goals.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67c912213865800
ScribalThis goal can be claimed when you have 8 cards in your hand.3goal-5-front67c912213865800
ScribalAfter you score 3 *Locations* you can claim this goal.4goal-1-front67c912213865800
ScribalFinally, after you've added 2 purple mantas to your kingdom, you can score this goal.5goal-6-front67c912213865800
ScribalAfter the end game is triggered, everyone gets one more turn, including the person that triggered the end game. You'll receive *Prosperity Points* for each scored location, your completed goals, and a point per character card currently in your hand.6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67c912213865800
ScribalDuring table creation, there are 2 options you can change after your first game. A *King* can be used and it can be assigned by your position, or through a draft. The *King* is another card you'll start with. Some *Kings* provide a 1 time bonus and some can be used every round. The other option is regarding *Goals*. You can either use the pre-printed goals or use 4 of the 10 random goals.7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67c912213865800
ScribalNow, you should have all of the information you need to start a game. [blue]Thank you for playing this tutorial for *Aquatica*.[/blue] If you have any questions or comments regarding this tutorial, please send a message to [blue]*Scribal*.[/blue]8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67c912213865800
