Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67aeca8a3a21e9.02312693.jpg[/img] Of all the tile-laying artists who have decorated the palace of King Manuel I in AZUL, two have stood out. Chosen by His Majesty to decorate the ceiling of the palace of Sintra, both masters will have to show the king who is the best artist in all Portugal! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *Azul: Duel,* two players will take tiles from factories to fill their pattern rows. At the end of each round, each completed row will result in a single tile being added to their scoring board, scoring points. [green]After five rounds, whoever has the most points wins![/green]2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerAt the beginning of the game, each player must take one of three [red]*dome plates*[/red] and add it their scoring board. Dome plates provide slots on which tiles can later be placed to score points. Our opponent will choose a plate first.3dome-plate-18-front000dome-plates-display 1
NekonyancerOkay, it's our turn! *Select the plate on the right.*1dome-plate-18-front67abe8984c77810
NekonyancerNext, we have to place our new plate on a 2x2 section of our Scoring Board, which is a [red]*6x6 grid.*[/red] You'll probably have to *scroll down* to see it. We can *rotate* the plate however we want.1maintitlebar_content67abe89ba3bd400
Nekonyancer[green]Let's place it![/green] *1.* Click on the *central* section of our Player Board. *2.* Click one more time to *rotate* the plate, so that the [red]red crown[/red] is in the bottom-right corner of the central section. It should look like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67aeca8b864384.29713817.jpg[/img] *3.* Click on [blue]*"Place dome tile"*[/blue] at the top!2maintitlebar_content67abe89ba3bd410actPlaceDomePlate-button 2
NekonyancerOkay, now that both players have placed their first dome plate, we can start the first round. Each round starts with the *Acquisition Phase.* Most of the things we acquire will come from the five [blue]*Factories.*[/blue]1maintitlebar_content67abe89f3f8e200factory0 2 factory1 2 factory2 2 factory3 2 factory4 2
NekonyancerAt the beginning of each round, BGA places 4 tiles on each [blue]*Factory,*[/blue] except for the [red]*large Factory,*[/red] which gets 5.2factory067abe89f3f8e200factory0 1 factory1 2 factory2 2 factory3 2 factory4 2
Nekonyancer[blue]On our turn, we can do one of the following actions:[/blue] • Take all tiles of one color from the *sun* (gold) area of a Factory. • Take all top tiles of one color from the *moon* (blue) areas of all Factories. • Take a Dome-plate (only twice per round). • Take a bonus chip (only twice per round).3maintitlebar_content67abe89f3f8e200
NekonyancerWe'll start by taking all tiles of one color from the *sun* area of a Factory. There are 3 black tiles in the [red]*large Factory!*[/red] Let's take them! *Click on the bottom of the three black tiles.*4factory067abe89f3f8e210factory0 1
NekonyancerWhenever we take tiles from the *sun* area of a Factory, the remaining tiles will automatically move to the Factory's *moon* area.1tile-43-front67abe8aca584c00
NekonyancerNext, we have to place those three black tiles on a single [red]*pattern line*[/red] on our board. We can't split them among multiple line, and we can't choose a line if it already has tiles of a different color. *Click on the line with 3 slots in it!*2player-table-9214348767abe8aca584c10
Nekonyancer[blue]There are two reasons why we chose the third pattern line.[/blue] *1.* We were able to complete it, filling every empty slot. *2.* There's a crown of the same color (black) in the line. Since both of the above are true, the line will be *scored* at the end of the round!1tile-38-front67abe8b232f1000
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, that's it for our turn![/blue] Now our opponent will go.2tile-38-front67abe8b232f1000
NekonyancerNext turn! Let's take more tiles. *Click on the right light-blue tile in [blue]this factory.[/blue]*1factory367abe8bc77ec710factory3 2
NekonyancerJust like before, the leftover tiles will move to the moon area of the Factory, but small Factories are a little different from the large one. In small Factories, leftover tiles must be *stacked up* so that only one is showing. We can choose the order in which tiles are stacked.1factory367abe8c98c61c00
NekonyancerHmm... let's stack the [red]red tile[/red] on top. *Click on the rightmost blue button.*2pagemaintitletext67abe8c98c61c10
NekonyancerOkay, now let's choose a pattern line for our tiles. We took 2 tiles, and we want to fill up lines whenever possible, so... *Select the second line.*1player-table-9214348767abe8ce06c6310
Nekonyancer[blue]Good! But did you notice that there's a problem with this line?[/blue] We can't *score* it without a light-blue crown in the same line! We'll fix that next turn...2tile-23-front67abe8d28607f00
NekonyancerAs you probably guessed, we'll fix that problem by taking a new [red]*Dome-plate.*[/red] Like before, there are three faceup plates available, but if we don't like any of them, we can spend 1 point to draw a facedown plate instead.1dome-plate-8-front67abeb4f75a3a00dome-plates-display 1
NekonyancerWhen we take a plate, we'll use one of [red]*these two tokens.*[/red] We must use both of them by the end of the round. [green]In other words, we must acquire exactly two new Dome-plates every round.[/green]2player-tokens-9214348767abeb4f75a3a00player-tokens-92143487 1
Nekonyancer*Select the middle Dome-plate!*3dome-plate-8-front67abeb4f75a3a10
Nekonyancer*Place it above our first plate. Do not rotate the tile.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67aeca8c922245.25200418.jpg[/img] *Then click on [blue]"Place dome tile"[/blue] at the top!*1maintitlebar_content67abeb819d31910actPlaceDomePlate-button 2
Nekonyancer[green]Next, let's learn about moons.[/green] We can't take tiles from a *single* moon. Instead, we must take *all* tiles of a single color from *all* moons. This only applies to the tile on top of each stack.1maintitlebar_content67abebae4921a00
NekonyancerIn this case, our opponent made a mistake when they took tiles from [blue]*this factory.*[/blue] They arranged the red tile on *top* of the stack, which sets us up perfectly! We can take four red tiles at once!2maintitlebar_content67abebae4921a00factory1 2
Nekonyancer*Click on [blue]this Factory's[/blue] stack to take all the red tiles!* (If this were a real game, you'd be able to click on any red tile to take them all. BGA is picky in Tutorial Mode.)3factory467abebae4921a10factory4 2
NekonyancerThis is perfect! We took four red tiles, and there's a red crown in our fourth line! *Select the fourth line!*1player-table-9214348767abebb30c90310
Nekonyancer[green]Great![/green] I'm not sure if you noticed, but the four red tiles weren't the only things to fly onto our board when we took our turn. We also acquired the [green]*first player tile,*[/green] which is now in the bottom-left corner of our board.1tile-60-front67abebb90b1f400player-table-92143487-line-6 14
NekonyancerThis happened because we were the first player in the round to take tiles from the large Factory's *moon* area. This tile will make us the first player in the next round, which is a huge advantage, but it will cost us [red]2 points![/red]2tile-60-front67abebb90b1f400
NekonyancerNext, let's fill our top row, in which we have a dark blue crown and a yellow crown. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67aeca8db53dd2.55502826.jpg[/img]1player-table-92143487-line-167abebc98fc3f00
NekonyancerTiles of both of those colors are available in the factories, but let's go with dark blue. *Click on the tile in [blue]this factory![/blue]*2factory367abebc98fc3f10factory3 2
NekonyancerWe took 2 tiles, but there's only 1 slot in our top row. *Select it anyway!*1player-table-92143487-line-167abec0fa2acd10
NekonyancerWe only needed 1 tile to fill up the row, leaving us with 1 tile leftover. The leftover tile went to the [blue]*Broken Tiles space*[/blue] in the bottom-left corner of our board, just above the slot for the first player token. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67aeca8ee03661.05348166.jpg[/img]1tile-43-front67abec14840c500player-table-92143487-line-5 14
NekonyancerIf we acquire more broken tiles, they'll stack up on the same space. At the end of the round, we'll lose *1/3/6/10* points for having *1/2/3/4* broken tiles in the same round. Broken tiles after the fourth are simply discarded with no penalty.2tile-49-front67abec14840c500
NekonyancerOkay, we've learned about taking tiles from sun areas, taking tiles from moon areas, and taking new Dome-plates. There's only one other kind of thing we can take: *bonus chips.* When all the tiles from a small Factory are taken, a single bonus chip is revealed. Each bonus chip has two different colors on it. 1tile-78-front67abec2887e4700
NekonyancerDuring the *Scoring Phase,* we can use pairs of bonus chips with a shared color to add a single tile of that color to one of our pattern lines. We can also use any three chips to add a tile of any color. *Click on this bonus chip to take it!*2tile-95-front67abec2887e4710
NekonyancerOkay, the bonus chip went onto our player board! Note that the slots for bonus chips are laid out in pairs. [red]This is because, like Dome-plates, we are required to take exactly two every round![/red]1player-table-9214348767abec394bcc900
Nekonyancer*Take another bonus chip!*1tile-78-front67abec4a0fa2e10
NekonyancerAlright, we've taken both of our required bonus chips for the round. Let's take our second Dome-plate. [red]Unfortunately, all the faceup plates have been taken![/red]1dome-plates-display67abec5d5ce2400dome-plates-display 1
NekonyancerIn this case, we have no choice but to pay a point to draw a facedown plate. [blue]*Click here!*[/blue]2generalactions67abec5d5ce2410
NekonyancerThe plate we drew is still facedown, so all we can see is the back. Each tile has one of two icons on the back: *Joker* - - - *Special* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67aeca9009d815.87557714.jpg[/img] - -[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67aeca910fba64.44032714.jpg[/img]1dome-plate-6-back67abec68b1bcb00
NekonyancerIn this case, we've drawn one with a *special* icon. It indicates that one of the four slots on the other side is *guaranteed* to be a special space. [green]I'll explain what special spaces and joker spaces do later![/green]2dome-plate-6-back67abec68b1bcb00
NekonyancerIf we were desperate for a joker space, we might be inclined to pay [red]another point[/red] to draw another Dome-plate. We can do this as many times as we like, unless we run out of points to spend.3generalactions67abec68b1bcb00
NekonyancerOnce we decide to stop, we can look at all the tiles we drew and select one to add to our board. In this case, I don't think we want to spend more points. *Click on [red]"Stop picking and reveal picked tiles."[/red]*4pagemaintitletext67abec68b1bcb10
Nekonyancer*1.* Scroll down and place the plate to the *right* of our first plate. *2.* Do [red]NOT[/red] rotate the tile. It should look like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67aeca920d7898.38096420.jpg[/img] *3.* Click on [blue]*"Place dome tile"*[/blue] at the top!1maintitlebar_content67abec8da803710actPlaceDomePlate-button 2
NekonyancerThe round is almost over! The only things left in the Factories are one black tile and a couple of bonus chips. We've already taken two bonus chips this round, so we can't take another. We have no choice but to take the tile. *Take it!*1tile-37-front67abecbc1195c10
Nekonyancer*Place it in our fifth line!*1player-table-9214348767abed86f3f2010
NekonyancerWell, here's an interesting situation! It's our turn, and the only thing left to take is a bonus chip. Again, we can't take it because we've already taken our two bonus chips for the round. [green]In this kind of situation, and *only* in this kind of situation, we must pass.[/green]1tile-91-front67abed920e64c00
NekonyancerOkay, everything has been acquired, so the *Acquisition Phase* is over. We moved on to the *Dome-tiling and Scoring Phase!* In this phase, if a pattern line is completely full and there's a crown of the same color in that line, we must move one of the tiles from the pattern line onto the crown, scoring points. Other tiles in the pattern line are discarded.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67abed9e0b38600
NekonyancerI know that was a lot to digest. We'll go through this line by line. Our first line is complete, and there's a crown of the same color in the same line. We must move the tile onto the crown. *Click on the blue crown!*2dome-plate-8-front67abed9e0b38610
Nekonyancer[green]Good! Now we'll score points for the tile.[/green] In this case, there are no other placed tiles adjacent to it. Whenever this happens, we score 1 point.1tile-43-front67abeda4105c100
Nekonyancer[green]Alright, let's move on to the next line.[/green] It's complete, and there's a crown of the same color in the line, so we can move one tile over. The other tile will be discarded. But in this case, we could instead place a tile on the *Joker space.* As you've probably guessed, tiles of *any color* can be placed on jokers.2tile-23-front67abeda411f2300
NekonyancerI think you'll agree that we should save the Joker for a more difficult situation. *Click on the light-blue crown!*3dome-plate-8-front67abeda411f2310
NekonyancerOkay, now we'll score it. This time, there IS a tile adjacent to it, so we'll follow a procedure. First, we'll check if there are any tiles that are *horizontally adjacent.* If so, we'll then score one point for each tile in that chain. Second, we'll check if there are any tiles that are *vertically adjacent.* If so, we'll again score one point for each tile in that chain.1dome-plate-8-front67abeda5bfa6600
NekonyancerIn this case, there are no horizontally adjacent tiles. No points there. There is a vertically adjacent tile (the dark blue one) so we'll score [green]2 points[/green] (for a chain of 2 adjacent tiles).2dome-plate-8-front67abeda5bfa6600
NekonyancerNext line! There are two different spaces we can place a tile on. [green]Which one should we use?[/green]3dome-plate-18-front67abeda5c15bc00
NekonyancerDefinitely the left one! It has vertically adjacent tiles, so we'll score [green]3 points[/green] instead of just 1. *Click on the left black crown!*4dome-plate-18-front67abeda5c15bc10
NekonyancerNow for the reds. Unfortunately, this one will only be worth 1 point. *Click on the red crown.*1dome-plate-18-front67abeda7ccc1310
NekonyancerOkay, there aren't any lines left to resolve. The tile in our fifth line will stick around for next round. There's one last thing to do in this phase: [red]pay penalties for broken tiles and the first player token.[/red]1tile-37-front67abeda9b59a300
NekonyancerThe penalty for the first player token is always 2 points. We have 1 broken tile, so we'll lose 1 point for that. [red]We'll lose 3 points total![/red]2tile-49-front67abeda9b59a300
NekonyancerThat's it for the *Scoring Phase,* so we moved on to *Round 2,* which begins with the *Preparation Phase.* BGA took care of everything for us. The Factories have been refilled with tiles and chips. Three new Dome-tiles have been flipped faceup. We got back the two tokens that we use to take Dome-tiles. 3maintitlebar_content67abeda9c1d5800
NekonyancerI don't think you need to see any more Acquisition Phase gameplay, but we still need to talk more about scoring, so I'll skip ahead Round 2's *Scoring Phase.* [blue]Just, um, check your phone or something while I "wha-whoosh" through this...[/blue]4maintitlebar_content67abeda9c1d5800
NekonyancerOkay! Here we go! We're about to move a yellow tile onto a yellow crown. [green]How many points will we score?[/green]1tile-28-front67abefb2bf5ae00
Nekonyancer[green]I hope you said 2 points![/green] 2 for a horizontal chain of 2 tiles. 0 points for verticals because there are no vertically adjacent tiles. *Click on the yellow crown!*2dome-plate-8-front67abefb2bf5ae10
NekonyancerOkay, now we'll move a tile onto the Joker space. [green]How many points will we score?[/green]1dome-plate-8-front67abefb7d354900
Nekonyancer[green]4 points![/green] 2 for a horizontal chain of 2 tiles, 2 for a vertical chain of 2 tiles. That's right! The tile we place gets counted *twice!* *Click on the Joker space!*2dome-plate-8-front67abefb7d354910
NekonyancerOkay, next line! [green]How many points for this tile?[/green]1dome-plate-6-front67abefbc1acf100
Nekonyancer[green]6 points! 2 horizontal, 4 vertical![/green] *Click on the blue crown!*2dome-plate-6-front67abefbc1acf110
Nekonyancer[blue]Now something special will happen![/blue] There's a *special* space on this plate! Whenever all three normal spaces on a plate are filled, the special space is automatically filled with a special tile! We'll then score however many points are indicated to the *right* of the line.1dome-plate-18-front67abefbe21c8400
Nekonyancer[green]In this case, the special space is in our fourth line, so we'll score 4 points![/green] We will not score additional points for adjacent tiles *at this time,* but it will count for tiles we place later!2dome-plate-18-front67abefbe21c8400
Nekonyancer[green]I hope scoring makes more sense now![/green] There's just one last thing I need to show you. *Scroll down* to our opponent's board. They're about to go through their own scoring procedure.3maintitlebar_content67abefbe26ddb00
NekonyancerOur opponent has 3 blue tiles in their fourth pattern line. They just need one more tile! This is the perfect time for them to use bonus chips. Again, if two chips *share* a color, they can be used as a single tile of that color. Three chips can be used as a tile of any color. Either way, chips can only be used to complete a line. *Watch!*1tile-42-front67abefdb0f27b00
Nekonyancer[blue]Be sure to thank our opponent for such a perfect demonstration of bonus chip usage.[/blue] :) The game will continue as you've seen for a total for *five rounds.* Each round will play out the same way, except that no one will take new Dome-plates in Round 5 (your player board will already be full).1maintitlebar_content67abeff9bb7e900
NekonyancerAfter the fifth round, some endgame points are awarded according to these [red]*scoring tablets.*[/red] You can *hover* over each one to see how they work. These three tablets are recommended for your first game. Once you have more experience with the game, you might want to toggle *3 random* or *4 random* in the Lobby Options to see some different ones!2scoring-tablet-2-front67abeff9bb7e900scoring-tablets 1
