Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edd54dd0f9.91018190.jpg[/img] You and your partner are sailing a pirate ship through kraken-infested waters! Can you steer her safely to shore? [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *Sail,* players will take turns playing cards in a series of mini-rounds called *tricks,* making this a *trick-taking game.* Depending on the cards played in each trick, the [blue]*pirate ship*[/blue] can sail onward, attack the kraken, get attacked by the kraken, or even get pulled ahead by a mermaid.2map_cell_1_4000map_cell_1_4 2
NekonyancerIf the players make it safely to [green]*shore*[/green] by the end of the 5th round, [green]they win![/green] If they are too slow or take too much damage from the kraken, [red]they lose![/red]3map_cell_11_4000map_cell_10_3 3 map_cell_11_4 3 map_cell_10_5 3
NekonyancerAt the beginning of each round, each player must select a *Pirate.* Each one has a different special ability. [green]You can hover over each one to see what they do![/green] *Select this Pirate!*4pirate_1010pirate_1 16
NekonyancerBoth players have chosen a pirate, so BGA dealt a hand of *9 cards* to each player. As you can see, cards are numbered from *1-9* and come in three colors (blue, green, and gray), making a total of *27 cards.*1myhand_wrap66bd5092d8e4d00
NekonyancerBGA also placed 6 cards in the *Kraken deck,* along with a special numberless Kraken card. The Kraken Deck represents our pirate ship's [red]structural integrity.[/red] We can check the exact contents of the deck at any time by clicking on it!3kraken_deck_wrap66bd5092d8e4d00
NekonyancerThe remaining cards were placed here, forming the [red]*Player Deck.*[/red]4deck_counter66bd5092d8e4d00deck_counter 1
NekonyancerBefore we start playing tricks, each player must select a card in their hand. When both players have done so, the cards will be *exchanged* with each other.5myhand_wrap66bd5092d8e4d00
NekonyancerHowever, our Pirate's *special ability* allows us to look at our partner's selection before selecting one of our own!6pirate_space_1194135466bd5092d8e4d00
NekonyancerHmm, they gave us the [green]*Green 5.*[/green] We probably shouldn't pass them a green card in return. You'll see why later. *Give them the [blue]Blue 5![/blue]*1myhand_item_2466bd509cb2d2010myhand_item_19 16 myhand_item_24 8
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, time to start playing tricks![/blue] We're the first player. We can play any card we want. *Play the [green]Green 8![/green]*1myhand_item_1466bd50ab6a3c710myhand_item_14 16
Nekonyancer[red]Okay, now our partner has to play a card, but they have to deal with some restrictions![/red] Like many trick-taking games, Sail uses *"Lead & Follow"* rules. The first card in each trick sets the *Lead Color.* The other player must then *follow* by playing another card of the same color, if they have one!1card_1466bd50af006fd00
NekonyancerOkay, they played the [green]*Green 6.*[/green] Both players have played a card now, so the trick is over, and a winner must be determined!1card_466bd50b3d6ef200
NekonyancerThe winner of a trick is whoever played the *highest* card of the *Lead color.* In this case, the Lead Color is [green]*green,*[/green] and we played the highest green card, so we win the trick.2card_1466bd50b3d6ef200
NekonyancerNext, I need to explain icons. [blue]Each number has an icon that it is associated with.[/blue] *1/2/3:* Wheel/Tentacle. *4/5:* Cannon. *6/7/8:* Wheel. *9:* Mermaid. If you scroll down, you'll find a *Player Aid* with this information.3card_1466bd50b3d6ef200
NekonyancerAt the end of each trick, BGA will check the icons on the cards we played to see if we triggered an *Action Combination.* You can find all six possible combinations on the left side of the [red]*Player Aid.*[/red] 4player_aid66bd50b3d6ef200player_aid_action_0 1 player_aid_action_1 1 player_aid_action_2 1 player_aid_action_3 1 player_aid_action_4 1 player_aid_action_5 1
NekonyancerIn this case, we triggered a [blue]*wheel-wheel combination!*[/blue] This combination will propel our pirate ship *diagonally forward.* Since we won the trick, the ship will move *diagonally up.* If our partner had won, it would move *diagonally down!*5player_aid_action_066bd50b3d6ef200map_cell_1_4 2 player_aid_action_0 2
Nekonyancer[blue]We're on our way![/blue] Arr, smell that salty spray! Makes ye feel alive, me hearties!6map_cell_2_366bd50b3d95bb00map_cell_2_3 2
NekonyancerNow that the action has been resolved, BGA will move the played cards to the [red]*Discard Pile.*[/red]7card_1466bd50b3d95bb00discard_pile_wrap 6
NekonyancerBy the way, the Discard Pile is similar to the Kraken Deck in that we can check the contents at any time by *clicking* on it.8discard_pile_wrap66bd50b3daa1d00
NekonyancerIf you forget who steers the ship up and who steers it down, you can check [red]*here*[/red] when there isn't a card in the slot.9wheel_direction_1194135466bd50b3daa1d00wheel_direction_11941354 6 wheel_direction_92143487 6
NekonyancerOkay, that was one complete trick! Since we won the trick, we must start the next one. *Play the [green]Green 5![/green]*10myhand_item_2466bd50b3daa1d10myhand_item_24 16
NekonyancerOur partner responded with the [blue]*Blue 3.*[/blue] Since they didn't follow the Lead color (green), they must not have any green cards in their hand. That means they could play any card they wanted. In this case, we played the only green card, so it's technically the highest card of the Lead Color. That means we win again.1scenario_wrap66bd50e455ff100
NekonyancerOur partner was very smart to play the [blue]*Blue 3*[/blue] because it has a *tentacle/wheel* on it, which matches well with the *cannon* on our [green]*Green 5!*[/green] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edd5683e24.70003947.jpg[/img] A [red]*cannon-tentacle/wheel*[/red] combination will help us keep the kraken at bay!2gameaction_status_wrap66bd50e455ff100card_24 3 card_23 2 player_aid_action_3 1
NekonyancerHow? By moving the [blue]*tentacle/wheel*[/blue] card to the bottom of the *Kraken deck.*3card_2366bd50e455ff100card_23 2
NekonyancerRemember, the *Kraken deck* represents our ship's structural integrity. By adding a card to it, we basically gained health!4kraken_deck_wrap66bd50e45884400
Nekonyancer[blue]There are two combinations that will result in us losing health:[/blue] [red]*1. Wheel - Wheel/Tentacle.*[/red] Our ship will move one space diagonally, but the top card of the Kraken deck will move to the discard pile. [blue]*2. Wheel/Tentacle - Wheel/Tentacle.*[/blue] Our ship will move one space diagonally, but the top *two* cards of the Kraken deck will move to the discard pile. We should try to avoid those combinations whenever possible!5player_aid66bd50e45884400player_aid_action_1 1 player_aid_action_2 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Next trick![/blue] Let's try and make a *Mermaid-Mermaid* combination, which moves the ship one space *straight ahead.* That's as good as two diagonal movements! It's a little hard to pull off though, since *9s* are the only cards with mermaid icons on them.6myhand_item_1166bd50e45884400
NekonyancerSince we know our partner doesn't have any more green cards, this is the perfect time to go for it! *Play the [green]Green[/green] 9!*7myhand_item_1166bd50e45884410myhand_item_11 16
Nekonyancer*Excellent!* Since our partner didn't have any green cards, they could play any card they wanted, enabling them to play another mermaid! [blue]Watch our ship zoom forward![/blue]1card_2266bd50f70ba6e00map_cell_2_3 2
NekonyancerWhile we're looking at the map, I'll explain some other features on it. These are [blue]*islands.*[/blue] If our ship attempts to move into one, nothing will happen, and we'll miss out on the movement. If we try to sail off the map, the same thing will happen: nothing.2map_cell_10_166bd50f70f45400map_cell_8_1 2 map_cell_10_1 2 map_cell_3_4 2 map_cell_8_7 2 map_cell_10_7 2
NekonyancerThese are obviously [red]*kraken tentacles.*[/red] Our ship can move into them, but we'll have to discard a card from the top of our Kraken Deck!3map_cell_7_466bd50f70f45400map_cell_4_1 1 map_cell_7_4 1 map_cell_6_7 1
NekonyancerFinally, these are [green]*storm clouds.*[/green] If we haven't passed the [blue]*cloud line*[/blue] by the end of the second round, we'll immediately lose the game!4map_cell_7_266bd50f70f45400map_cell_5_2 7 map_cell_5_4 7 map_cell_5_6 7 map_storm_5_0 3 map_storm_5_1 3
NekonyancerI'm not too worried about the storm clouds; we're making great progress so far. However, we have to be careful not to win *too many tricks.* When one player wins their *fourth trick,* the round will end, and the Kraken will attack! [green]We should squeeze in as many tricks as we can before that happens![/green]5myhand_wrap66bd50f7106c300trick_counter_wrap_92143487 1
NekonyancerAs you can see [red]*here,*[/red] we've won 3 tricks so far, and our opponent hasn't won any. We should make sure our partner wins the next trick.6trick_counter_wrap_1194135466bd50f7106c300trick_counter_wrap_11941354 1 trick_counter_wrap_92143487 1
NekonyancerWe definitely don't want to play a green card then. Hmm... there's a good chance our partner has the Gray 7 or Gray 8. *Play the Gray 6!*7myhand_item_1066bd50f7106c310myhand_item_13 13 myhand_item_10 16
Nekonyancer*Perfect! They played the Gray 8.* Since we made a *Wheel-Wheel* combination and our opponent won the trick, our ship will move diagonally down.1card_166bd517179f7200
NekonyancerAnd since they won the last trick, they must start the next one!2playertable_9214348766bd51717ea0900
NekonyancerOkay, they played the [blue]*Blue 8.*[/blue] Since we have blue cards in our hand, we must play a blue as well. [blue]Should we play the Blue 4 or the Blue 6?[/blue]1myhand_item_566bd51df467ba00card_12 2
NekonyancerWell, Blue 4 has a *cannon* icon on it. Cannon-Wheel is not a valid combination, so nothing will happen. *Play the [blue]Blue 6![/blue]*2myhand_item_2766bd51df467ba10myhand_item_5 16
NekonyancerThis time they played [blue]*Blue 5,*[/blue] which has a *cannon.* We have no choice but to respond with [blue]*Blue 4*[/blue] - another *cannon* card. *Play the [blue]Blue 4![/blue]*1myhand_item_2766bd51f1b082510myhand_item_27 16
NekonyancerWe made a *cannon-cannon* combination. When this is formed, BGA will draw a card from the top of the [red]*Player Deck*[/red] and trigger some sort of positive effect.1deck_counter66bd51fa1d49100deck_counter 1 player_aid_cannon_0 2 player_aid_cannon_1 2 player_aid_cannon_2 2 player_aid_cannon_3 2
NekonyancerAll the possible effects are listed on the right side of the *Player Aid:* [blue]*Wheel:*[/blue] Ship moves diagonally. [blue]*Mermaid:*[/blue] Ship moves straight ahead. [blue]*Wheel/Tentacle:*[/blue] Card is moved to bottom of Kraken deck. [blue]*Cannon:*[/blue] Draw another card.2player_aid66bd51fa1d49100player_aid_cannon_0 2 player_aid_cannon_1 2 player_aid_cannon_2 2 player_aid_cannon_3 2
NekonyancerIt's a [red]*Wheel/Tentacle*[/red] card! Cool. That means more health for our ship!3card_2166bd51fa1eeab00card_21 1
NekonyancerNext, they played the [blue]*Blue 7.*[/blue] We don't have any blue cards, so we can play anything we want. Unfortunately, all we have are *cannon* cards, and *Wheel-Cannon* doesn't do anything. Oh well! *Play the [green]Green 4![/green]*1myhand_item_666bd521c7f7eb10card_15 2 myhand_item_13 16
NekonyancerOkay, our partner just won their [green]*fourth trick,*[/green] so the round is over. At the end of the round, a number of cards are discarded from the top of the Kraken deck, depending the [blue]*Kraken Token's*[/blue] position. [red]Brace yourself, me hearty![/red]1kraken_meeple66bd52220f5c300kraken_meeple 2 trick_counter_wrap_92143487 3
Nekonyancer3 cards were discarded, but our ship is still fairly healthy. Eventually, the special [red]*Kraken Card*[/red] will be discarded. Right now, it's the third card from the bottom. When that happens, the [blue]*Kraken Token*[/blue] will advance, making the Kraken even deadlier! The card will then return to the bottom of the Kraken deck.2kraken_deck_wrap66bd52221048400
NekonyancerIf the [blue]*Kraken Token*[/blue] reaches the *skull* space, or if the Kraken card is ever the *only card* in the Kraken deck, we'll [red]immediately lose.[/red] We'll need to keep making *cannon-wheel/tentacle* combos to make sure neither of those things happen!3kraken_board66bd52221048400kraken_meeple 2
NekonyancerThe Kraken's attack is over, so we moved on to *Round 2!* Some [green]*storm icons*[/green] and [green]*lightning bolts*[/green] appeared to remind us that we need to be past the [blue]*cloud line*[/blue] by the end of this round.6round_wrap66bd522212fdf00round_wrap 3 map_cell_5_2 7 map_cell_5_4 7 map_cell_5_6 7 map_storm_5_0 3 map_storm_5_1 3
NekonyancerOf course, we don't need to worry about that anymore, as we're already past the line, but keep an eye out for those icons when you play a real game! You'll usually have two sets of storm clouds to stay ahead of - one for the *second* round, and one for the *fourth.*7map_cell_6_566bd522212fdf00map_cell_6_5 2
NekonyancerAs part of the set up for the new round, BGA collected all the cards that weren't in the Kraken deck and dealt a new hand to each player. Just like the first round, we must start by *exchanging* a card with our partner. [blue]You already know how to do this, so I'll skip through it.[/blue]8myhand_wrap66bd522212fdf00
NekonyancerAnd now the players will play tricks again! [blue]I'll keep fast-forwarding...[/blue]1myhand_item_2766bd524200d6000
Nekonyancer[blue]We have a great opportunity here![/blue] Our partner played the [blue]*Blue 8.*[/blue] We don't have any blue cards, so we can play anything we want. [red]What do you think we should play? Hint: look at our partner's pirate![/red]1card_1266bd5277ed1dc00card_12 7
NekonyancerOur partner can steer the ship *straight ahead* when they win a trick consisting of two *wheel* cards with the same number. We should definitely play another 8! *Play the Gray 8!*2myhand_item_166bd5277ed1dc10myhand_item_1 16
NekonyancerBy the way, it is possible to *miss* the goal. If we sail diagonally down to [red]*F9,*[/red] and then a mermaid pulls us forward to [blue]*F11,*[/blue] it will be impossible to reach one of the goal spaces. We will lose the game.1map_cell_11_666bd528737c9300map_cell_9_6 1 map_cell_11_6 2
NekonyancerWe reached the shore and [green]won the game,[/green] but each game is actually just one *scenario* in a long *campaign!* [red]There are 6 scenarios in all, each harder than the last![/red] *Click on [blue]"Continue"[/blue] so we can see what the next scenario looks like!*1btnContinueCampaign66bd529291de110btnContinueCampaign 2 map_cell_10_5 3
NekonyancerAs you can see, it's longer, has more [red]*tentacles,*[/red] and features *two* sets of [green]*storm clouds*[/green] (one for Round 2, one for Round 4). [green]Again, storm icons and lightning bolts will appear to remind you when you need to pass a cloud line![/green]1map_storm_12_166bd529dd385b00map_cell_6_1 1 map_cell_14_1 1 map_cell_8_3 1 map_cell_12_3 1 map_cell_15_6 1 map_cell_4_7 1 map_storm_5_0 3 map_storm_5_1 3 map_storm_12_0 3 map_storm_12_1 3
NekonyancerOkay, I think you've seen enough! The last thing I have to mention is the *Lobby Options.* [blue]You can control...[/blue] - The start player. - Whether you play one scenario or a whole campaign. - Which scenario you start with. - Whether the game allows for *discussion* between rounds. - *The Seafarers Expansion.*2maintitlebar_content66bd529dd385b00
NekonyancerThe *Seafarers Expansion* adds 6 more scenarios, 4 new pirates, and 3 different tiles to the map. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edd589d358.27079576.jpg[/img]*Whirlpool:* immediately moves the ship onward in the same direction it was already going. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edd5aa37d2.44459204.jpg[/img]*Ally Ship:* Immediately move a Wheel/Tentacle card from the discard pile to the Kraken deck.
