NekonyancerIn *Fox in the Forest: Duet,* you and your partner will take turns playing cards from your hands in a series of mini-rounds called *tricks,* making this a *trick-taking* game. Depending on the winner of each trick and the cards played, [blue]*this tracker*[/blue] will move along the path through the forest, removing a gem at each destination.2maintitlebar_content

NekonyancerIf the players succeed in removing all the gems, they'll [green]win the game[/green] and score points based on how quickly they did it! If they fall off the path too often or run out of time (3 rounds) they'll be [red]lost in the woods forever![/red]3maintitlebar_content

NekonyancerAt the beginning of each round, BGA deals [red]*11 cards*[/red] to each player. Cards come in 3 different suits - *Doves, Roses,* and *Stars* - and are numbered from *1 to 10,* for a total of 30 cards. You might have to scroll down to see our hand.4myhand_wrap

NekonyancerOf the remaining 8 cards, one is placed face-up in the [blue]*Decree slot.*[/blue] (More on this later!)5decree_wrap

Nekonyancer[blue]*This token*[/blue] marks us as the first player, so let's get started! To take our turn, all we have to do is select a card in our hand and play it. *Scroll down and play the 6 of Doves!*6first_player_token_p92143487

Nekonyancer[blue]That wasn't so hard, was it?[/blue] Like many trick-taking games, Fox in the Forest: Duet uses *"Lead & Follow"* rules. The first card in each trick sets the *Lead Suit.* The other player must then *Follow Suit* by playing another card of the same suit, if they have one!1board_space_counter_5

NekonyancerIn this case, we set the Lead Suit as *Doves* by starting the trick with the [green]*6 of Doves.*[/green] [green]Our partner must now follow suit with another Dove![/green]2board_space_counter_5

NekonyancerThey played the [red]*1 of Doves.*[/red] Both players have played a card now, so the trick is over, and a winner must be determined!1board_space_counter_5

NekonyancerThe winner of a trick is whoever played the highest card of the [blue]*Decreed Suit.*[/blue] If there are no cards of the Decreed Suit in play, the highest card of the *Lead Suit* wins.2board_space_counter_5

NekonyancerIn this case, there are no cards of the Decreed Suit (Stars) in play, so the highest card of the Lead Suit (Doves) wins the trick. [green]That means we won the trick.[/green]3board_space_counter_5

NekonyancerAfter each trick, BGA will move the tracker a number of spaces equal to the cards' [blue]*combined Move value.*[/blue] In this case, our card has a value of 2, and our partner's card's value is 0, so the tracker will move 2 spaces total.4move_counter_wrap_92143487

NekonyancerThe tracker usually moves toward the winner of the trick. However, in this case, our partner played a card with a *special ability.* The [blue]*Musician (1)*[/blue] allows the winner of the trick to choose which way the tracker moves.5board_space_counter_5

NekonyancerAlright then. Let's move the tracker toward our partner. *Click [green]here![/green]*6board_space_counter_3

NekonyancerAfter we moved the tracker, a gem was removed from the tracker's destination. [blue]Great! Just 11 gems to go![/blue]1gem_space_3

NekonyancerSince we won the last trick, we have to start the next one. *Play the 7 of Doves!*2myhand_item_6

Nekonyancer7s are [green]*Gift*[/green] cards. Whenever one is played, each player must immediately give a card to their partner. *Give our partner the 2 of Doves.*1board_space_counter_5

NekonyancerThey gave us a [blue]*2 of Stars*[/blue] in return!1myhand_item_2

NekonyancerOur partner played the [green]*8 of Doves.*[/green] Just like last trick, no cards of the Decreed suit have been played. Doves is the Lead Suit, and our partner's card is the highest Dove in play, so they win the trick. The combined move value is 2 again, so the [blue]*tracker*[/blue] will move 2 spaces toward our partner.1board_space_counter_5

NekonyancerSince our partner won that trick, they'll start the next one!2playertablecard_11941354

NekonyancerThey started with another [green]*Dove.*[/green] Normally, we would have to follow with a Dove of our own... but we don't have any! In this case, we can play *any card.* This gives us a lot of freedom in determining where the tracker ends up!1board_space_counter_5

NekonyancerNo matter what card we play, our partner will have the only card of the *Lead Suit.* If we play a Rose, our partner will win the trick, and the tracker will move toward them. If we play a Star - the [blue]*Decreed suit*[/blue] - we'll win, and the tracker will move toward us.3myhand_item_8

NekonyancerThe tracker is already very close to our partner's end of the board. If it goes too far, it will fall off the edge. To prevent that, we need to play a star... or a special card. *Play our 1 of Roses (Musician)!*4myhand_item_24

NekonyancerOur partner will win this trick, but thanks to our [blue]*Musician,*[/blue] they can move the tracker in either direction!1card_24

NekonyancerOur partner played yet another Dove. This particular one, *Foxes,* will let them choose a player. That player can then swap a card in their hand with the card in the [blue]*Decree slot.*[/blue]1board_space_counter_4

NekonyancerHmm. They swapped a 4 of Stars with a [blue]*10 of Stars.*[/blue] I don't think they accomplished much here. But in the right situation, and in the hands of an expert player, this can be a critically important ability!1board_space_counter_5

NekonyancerNow then, how should we respond to our partner's [green]*3 of Doves?*[/green] Again, since we don't have any Doves to follow with, we can play anything. Let's play a Star. As the [blue]*Decreed Suit,*[/blue] it will beat our partner's card, regardless of rank! *Play the 2 of Stars!*2board_space_counter_4

NekonyancerHmm. The [blue]*tracker*[/blue] is really close to our edge of the board now. For the next trick, I want to pick up the gem on the [red]*very last space,*[/red] but we need to be careful not to go too far. [blue]What card do you think we should play?[/blue]1board_space_counter_9

NekonyancerThe Royal Heir will give our partner a very flexible turn. Hopefully they'll play something that will let us win the trick while providing one movement. *Play the 9 of Roses (Royal Heir)!*2myhand_item_19

NekonyancerThey played a Gazelle, which allows us to ignore the movement value of one of the two played cards. That means we can move either 0 or 1 spaces. Perfect! Moving 0 spaces is allowed, and we can even pick up a gem while doing so, but we don't want to do that here. *Move to the [green]last space[/green] on the track!*1board_space_counter_9

NekonyancerNext, I'll demonstrate what happens when we go too far. *Play the 8 of Stars!*1board_space_counter_10

Nekonyancer[red]We went off the board![/red] The [blue]*tracker*[/blue] automatically moved back to the middle of the board. If there had been a gem there, we would NOT have picked it up. As a penalty, one [green]*Forest Token*[/green] was placed on the last space, shortening the overall path. If there had been any gems on that space, they would have shifted over to the next space on the path.1player_name_92143487

NekonyancerWe have a total of [green]*4 Forest Tokens*[/green] per game. If we use up all our Forest Tokens and go off the board again, we'll be [red]lost in the forest[/red] forever!2forest_token_2

NekonyancerOkay, I think you got the gist of the game now. The game will continue as you've seen until both players run out of cards, marking the end of the round. [blue]I'll fast-forward to that point now.[/blue]3maintitlebar_content

NekonyancerAt the end of the round, three important events occur. First, one more [red]*gem*[/red] was added to each space marked with a small "+". There are five of them on the board. If one of them had been blocked by a Forest Token, the gem would have shifted over to the next available space.1gem_space_8

NekonyancerSecond, we need to spend another [green]*Forest Token*[/green] to shorten the path. If there is none left, this step is skipped. *Click [green]here[/green] to shorten the path!*1board_space_counter_9

NekonyancerThe [red]*gem*[/red] in that space automatically shifted over. Finally, if you scroll down, you'll see that we have a brand new hand of 11 cards! [blue]We're ready for Round 2![/blue]1gem_space_8

NekonyancerWhen we finish picking up the gems, BGA will give us a score depending on our selected *difficulty* and how quickly we were able to finish. *DIFFICULTY:* Level 1: +10 points. Level 2: +20 points. Level 3: +30 points. [green][tip] The harder the difficulty, the smaller the path is and the fewer Forest Tokens you get![/green]2maintitlebar_content

NekonyancerIf you finish in Round 2 (as opposed to Round 3), you score an additional *+10* points. Finally, you get... *+1* point per card remaining in either player's hand. *+3* points per unused Forest Token. [green]How many points can you get?[/green]3maintitlebar_content
