Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67ad903a4aa2c2.19739917.jpg[/img] Japan, 1761: Harima province. Daimyo Sakai Tadazumi is one of the most important advisors in the Edo Shogunate. To gain influence with the court of the White Heron, you must insert family members into every level of life within the White castle! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *The White Castle,* players will take turns using dice to trigger actions on the board. These actions allow them to gain resources, spend resources to put meeples on the board, and most importantly, trigger additional actions. Points are mostly awarded for placing meeples on the board. [green]After just three rounds of three turns each, whoever has the most points wins![/green]2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerAt the beginning of the game, each player must choose a pair of *starting cards.* The number of available pairs is equal to the *number of players + 1.* [green]This is a 2-player game, so there are three pairs.[/green]3twc-main-game-panel-round-counter000
NekonyancerEach pair consists of a [red]*Starting Resources card*[/red] and an [blue]*Action card.*[/blue] BGA randomly chose us as the *first player,* and these cards are chosen in *reverse* turn order, so our opponent will choose first.4twc-main-game-panel-round-counter000twc-starting-resource-draft-stock 1 twc-starting-action-draft-stock 2
NekonyancerOkay, it's our turn to pick. I like the resources on the left card. *Click on the left resource card. Then [blue]confirm[/blue] your choice at the top!*1twc-main-card-35-front67a6cd70104c410
Nekonyancer*Good!* At the top, you should be able to see all the resources provided by the card. In this game, most actions and resource acquisitions can be triggered in any order we choose, but in many cases, it won't matter. *Click on [green]"Resolve All"[/green] to claim all the resources.*1twc-choose-action-all67a6cd755fb6b10twc-choose-action-all 3
NekonyancerYou can see all the resources we acquired [red]*here:*[/red] 3 coins, 2 Daimyo seals, 4 rice, 2 iron, and 0 mother-of-pearl.1twc-player-panel-resources-1194135467a6cd8e9938500player_board_11941354 1
NekonyancerYou can also see those resources on our Domain board. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67ad903b995897.76447705.jpg[/img] *Scroll down* until you find it.2twc-main-game-panel-round-counter67a6cd8e9938500
NekonyancerThe three tracks on the left side of our board are used for *rice, iron,* and *mother-of-pearl.* Note that each track only goes up to 7. If we try to gain more than that, it will go to waste!3twc-player-board-resource-track-pearl-1194135467a6cd8e9938500
NekonyancerThe same goes for [red]*Daimyo seals*[/red] across the top of our board, but we can only hold up to *5.* The icon to the right of the seals is for [blue]*coins,*[/blue] and the one after that is [green]*victory points.*[/green] No limits for those, of course!4twc-seal-stock-1194135467a6cd8e9938500twc-seal-stock-11941354 1 twc-coin-stock-11941354 2 twc-vp-stock-11941354 3
NekonyancerAfter we gained resources from the resource card, it was flipped over and placed next to our *Lantern.* Whenever we trigger a lantern action, we'll gain all the resources shown to the right of it. We'll add more icons to our lantern as we play through the game!5twc-main-card-35-back67a6cd8e9938500
NekonyancerThe *Action card* was placed here. We'll be able to trigger its action later. *Click on [red]"Confirm"[/red] at the top so we can start the game!*6twc-main-card-44-front67a6cd8e9938510confirmTurn 1
NekonyancerGreat! At the beginning of each round, BGA rolls several white, red, and black dice and arranges them on the left side of the main board. The number of dice of each color is always equal to the *number of players + 1.* [green]In this case, we're playing a 2-player game, so BGA rolled 3 of each color.[/green]1twc-dice-967a6ce5fa130500
NekonyancerThe reds always go in the top row, blacks in the middle, and whites in the bottom row. In each row, the dice are arranged with *lower* values on the left and *higher* values on the right. [blue]Here's another example from a 3-player game:[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67ad903ce5d1f0.78996098.jpg[/img]2twc-dice-767a6ce5fa130500
NekonyancerOn our turn, we must choose one of the dice and place it on an action space on the board. However, we can only choose the *leftmost* or *rightmost* die in each row. The ones in the middle - for the moment - are locked.3twc-dice-767a6ce5fa130500
NekonyancerEach action space has a number on it. If we place a die with a higher value than what's printed, we'll [green]gain coins[/green] equal to the difference. However, if we place a die with a lower value, we'll have to [red]pay[/red] the difference!4twc-castle-room-main-board-steward-267a6ce5fa130500
Nekonyancer[blue]Let's try it![/blue] *1.* Select the *Black 5.* *2.* Place it on this space.5twc-castle-room-main-board-steward-267a6ce5fa130510twc-castle-room-main-board-steward-2-courtier-stock 14
Nekonyancer*Great!* We placed a 5 on a 3 space. Since 5 - 3 = 2, [green]we gained 2 coins![/green] Since this is a *2-player game,* no other dice can be placed here for the rest of the round. In *3* or *4-player* games, a second die can be stacked on each space.1twc-castle-room-main-board-steward-267a6ce70e4bd400
NekonyancerIf there were more players in this game, and someone stacked a second die here, it would use the *first die's value* for calculating coins. For example, if someone stacked a *2* on top of this *5,* they would have to [red]pay 3 coins.[/red] *2 - 5 = -3.*2twc-castle-room-main-board-steward-267a6ce70e4bd400
NekonyancerOf course, we didn't just place this die to get coins. We did it to trigger actions. Next to the action space, there's a column of *die indicators,* followed by a card with three Action Scrolls on it. [green]We can trigger all the scrolls on the card with indicators that match the color of the die we used.[/green]3twc-castle-room-main-board-steward-267a6ce70e4bd400
NekonyancerIn this case, we used a *black die,* and the top two scrolls have black die indicators, so we can trigger those two scrolls. If we had used a white die instead, we'd just trigger the bottom scroll. We can't use a [red]red die[/red] because it wouldn't trigger anything!4twc-castle-room-main-board-steward-267a6ce70e4bd400
NekonyancerWe'll have to trigger those two action scrolls one at a time. *Click [blue]here![/blue]*5twc-choose-action-967a6ce70e4bd410twc-choose-action-9 2
NekonyancerThe top scroll will grant us 2 mother-of-pearl. *Click on it!*1twc-main-card-action-block-10-167a6ce772f3a110
Nekonyancer*Now click up [green]here![/green]*1twc-choose-action-1267a6ce79e075010twc-choose-action-12 3
NekonyancerOkay, now we'll resolve the other scroll, which grants 1 Daimyo seal and 1 victory point (red fan). Again, the order in which we receive them doesn't particularly matter in this case, so *click on [green]"Resolve All!"[/green]*1twc-choose-action-all67a6ce7bebe4b10twc-choose-action-all 3
NekonyancerOkay, that's it for our first turn! *Click on [red]"Confirm"[/red] to end our turn.* Then our opponent will go!1confirmTurn67a6ce805b7d910confirmTurn 1
NekonyancerNext turn! In the first turn, all we did was acquire more resources. Let's do something more exciting this time! *1.* Select the [red]*Red 4.*[/red] *2.* Place it on *this space!*1twc-castle-room-main-board-steward-167a6cee18f69110twc-castle-room-main-board-steward-1-courtier-stock 14
NekonyancerWe gained 1 coin for placing a *4* on a *3* space. Since we used a [red]red die,[/red] now we can trigger the scrolls with red die indicators. *Click [blue]here.[/blue]*1twc-choose-action-2167a6ceeb3115010twc-choose-action-21 2
NekonyancerLet's take care of the simple one first. *Click on the top scroll.*1twc-main-card-9-front67a6cef0d0b2310
Nekonyancer2 iron. Cool. *Click [green]here![/green]*1twc-choose-action-2367a6cef364e7b10twc-choose-action-23 3
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, now we'll trigger the other scroll, which grants a Gardener Action![/blue] I'd better explain a few things first. On our *Domain board,* you may have noticed that we have three rows of meeples: *Courtiers* (top), *Gardeners* (middle), and *Warriors* (bottom). [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67ad903e1ccde6.61708455.jpg[/img]1twc-choose-action-2267a6cef555c4a00
NekonyancerOn the left side of the main board, BGA laid out six *Gardener cards.* Each one has a rice cost, a victory point value, and an associated action.2twc-garden-card-10-front67a6cef555c4a00
Nekonyancer For example, the one in the top-left corner costs 2 rice, is worth 3 points at the end of the game, and grants 2 Daimyo seals. [green][tip] You can hover over any of the cards to see details![/green]3twc-garden-card-10-front67a6cef555c4a00
NekonyancerWhen we take a Gardener action, we can take the leftmost Gardener on our Domain board, place it on a Gardener card, pay the rice cost, and trigger the associated action! This particular Gardener action has an additional cost of 1 Daimyo seal, which isn't a problem for us. *Click [blue]here[/blue] to trigger the action!*4twc-choose-action-2267a6cef555c4a10twc-choose-action-22 2
NekonyancerHmm... the bottom-right card looks like a good option. *Click here!*1twc-garden-card-6-front67a6cef9d35af10
Nekonyancer[green]Okay, we paid 3 food to place a Gardener.[/green] Next, scroll down to our *Domain Board.* As you can see, placing the Gardener uncovered an [red]*iron icon*[/red] on our board!1twc-player-board-gardeners-1194135467a6cf03e6fb300twc-choose-action-24 2 twc-player-board-gardeners-11941354 1
NekonyancerIf we place a black die to the left of our row of gardeners, we'll gain resources from all the exposed icons in the row. Then we'll trigger the action shown on the card to the right! Let's say that we placed a *Black 4* there. We'd [red]pay 2 coins[/red] (because 4 - 6 = -2), gain 2 iron, and trigger the warrior action on our Action card. These are called *Personal Domain Actions.*2twc-player-board-gardeners-1194135467a6cf03e6fb300
NekonyancerSpeaking of Personal Domain actions, the card we just placed a gardener on provides one! We have to pay 4 coins, though. *Click [blue]here[/blue] to pay for the action!*3twc-choose-action-2467a6cf03e6fb310twc-choose-action-24 2
NekonyancerSince we've only placed one meeple so far, our options for this action are: • 1 Rice + Warrior action. • 2 Iron + Warrior action. • 1 Mother-of-Pearl + Warrior action. Let's take the iron! *Click on the Black die on our Domain board.*1twc-main-card-44-front67a6cf0b7404f10
Nekonyancer*Click on [green]"Resolve All"[/green] to gain the iron.*1twc-choose-action-all67a6cf44a512910twc-choose-action-all 3
Nekonyancer*Now click [blue]here[/blue] to trigger the Warrior action!*3twc-choose-action-2567a6cf4c4a1ea10twc-choose-action-25 2
NekonyancerWarrior actions let us move the leftmost Warrior on our Domain Board to one of the [red]*Training yards*[/red] in the top-right corner of the main board. Each yard has an iron cost in the bottom-left corner and an action (or two) in the top-left corner.1twc-training-yard-267a6cf514d40100twc-training-yard-1 1 twc-training-yard-2 1 twc-training-yard-3 1
NekonyancerFor example, [red]*this yard*[/red] costs 3 iron and lets us trigger any action scroll in the castle. [green]The actions provided by the yards will be different in every game![/green]2twc-training-yard-267a6cf514d40100twc-training-yard-2 1
NekonyancerThis seems like a pretty good option for us. *Click [red]here[/red] to place a warrior!*4twc-training-yard-267a6cf514d40110twc-training-yard-2 1
Nekonyancer*Great!* But before we trigger this yard's action, look closely at the icons in the bottom-right corner of the yard. They indicate how warriors are scored. Unlike gardeners, warriors do not provide flat amounts of victory points.1twc-training-yard-267a6cf789b77200twc-training-yard-2 1
NekonyancerInstead, at the end of the game, each Warrior is worth 1 point per Courtier we placed in the castle. [green]In other words, Warriors x Courtiers = points![/green] Also, each warrior in the [green]*most expensive yard*[/green] counts double!2twc-training-yard-267a6cf789b77200twc-training-yard-1 3
NekonyancerI'll show you Courtier actions next. We can use the Training yard's action to get one! *Click [blue]here![/blue]*3twc-choose-action-2867a6cf789b77210twc-choose-action-28 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, now we can pick any action scroll in the castle.[/blue] The middle scroll on this card has a Courtier action! *Click on the middle scroll!*2twc-main-card-action-block-5-267a6cf838647e10
NekonyancerI actually made a slight mistake when I made this replay. The scroll I chose requires us to pay 1 Daimyo Seal for a Courtier action. I could have used [red]*this one*[/red] instead, which offers the same action for free: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67ad903f334886.97898938.jpg[/img] Heh. Oops. Oh well.1jj-custom-controls67a6cfb26a01500
Nekonyancer*Click [blue]here[/blue] to trigger the action!*2twc-choose-action-2967a6cfb26a01510twc-choose-action-29 2
NekonyancerThis is the [blue]*castle gate.*[/blue] The icons next to it represent the two optional steps that comprise a Courtier action. First, we can pay 2 coins to move a Courtier from our Domain Board to the castle gate. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67ad90405622f1.91330614.jpg[/img]1twc-castle-room-main-board-gate67a6cfb56eabf00twc-castle-room-main-board-gate 2
NekonyancerEach Courtier at the gate is worth 1 point at the end of the game, but since they aren't actually inside the castle, they don't count for Warrior scoring. *Click [blue]here[/blue] to place a Courtier!*2twc-choose-action-3067a6cfb56eabf10twc-choose-action-30 2
NekonyancerThe other optional step of a Courtier action lets us pay mother-of-pearl to move a Courtier from the gate up and into the castle. If we pay *2,* we can move *1* level up. If we pay *5,* we can move *2* levels up. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67ad90415ec431.76018179.jpg[/img] We cannot pay 5 and move two different Courtiers 1 level up.1twc-castle-room-main-board-gate67a6cfbb8731300
NekonyancerIn this case, we only have 2 mother-of-pearl, so we'll just move up 1 level. *Click [blue]here![/blue]*2twc-choose-action-3167a6cfbb8731310twc-choose-action-31 2
Nekonyancer*Select the Courtier at the gate.* As you can see, we can move it to any of the three areas in the first level of the castle. When we do, we will acquire the area's action card and move it to our Domain Board. *Move to the rightmost area!*1twc-castle-room-main-board-steward-3-courtier-stock67a6cfc46ae3610
Nekonyancer*Great!* The card is now on our Domain Board, changing what we get from Personal Domain actions. When we acquired the new card, the old one was pushed out, flipped over, and placed next to our [red]*lantern!*[/red]1twc-main-card-5-front67a6cfe937d9000twc-lantern-card-stock-11941354 1
NekonyancerThat's not all! Whenever we acquire a new card, we can trigger one of its white action scrolls for free. *Click [blue]here[/blue] to do so!*2twc-choose-action-3367a6cfe937d9010twc-choose-action-33 2
Nekonyancer*Click on the bottom scroll to get 1 iron and 1 rice!*1twc-main-card-action-block-5-367a6cff44c4f310
Nekonyancer[green]*Resolve all!*[/green]1twc-choose-action-all67a6cff930f6010twc-choose-action-all 3
NekonyancerFinally, we have to draw a new card from the deck to replace the one we took from the board. *Click [blue]here![/blue] Then confirm!*1twc-choose-action-3267a6cffbe03b810twc-choose-action-32 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Whew! That was quite a turn! Here's a quick recap:[/blue] We placed a die, which triggered a *Gardener* action, which let us pay 4 coins to trigger a *Personal Domain* action, which gave us a *Warrior* action, which let us trigger any action scroll in the castle. We chose a *Courtier* action, which gave us a new card and let us trigger one of its white scrolls.1maintitlebar_content67a6d002a24cd00
Nekonyancer[blue]Just a couple more details about Courtiers.[/blue] In addition to increasing the value of our Warriors, Each Courtier on the *first/second/third* level of the castle is worth *3/6/10* points at the end of the game. If we move a Courtier into the third level, we can also claim a bonus from the *Daimyo card.*2twc-daimyo-courtier-stock67a6d002a24cd00
Nekonyancer[green]Turn 3![/green] Looks like all the high-numbered dice are gone, so we should take the *leftmost* die in a row. Whenever we do, we'll trigger a *lantern* bonus!1twc-dice-167a6d0553a8bd00
NekonyancerUnfortunately, the only remaining Action space in the castle has a *4* printed on it. We would have to pay 3 coins to place a "1" here, and we're broke!4twc-castle-room-main-board-diplomat-267a6d0553a8bd00
NekonyancerThere are also a couple action spaces in the bottom-right corner. This area is called [blue]*Outside the Walls.*[/blue] If we placed a die here, we could trigger one of the actions next to the space we use. It doesn't matter what color is used. [red]Unfortunately, both of the spaces are 5s, so again, we can't use them![/red]5twc-main-game-board-outside-the-walls67a6d0553a8bd00twc-main-game-board-outside-the-walls 2
Nekonyancer[green]Well, there's always the well![/green] The [green]*well*[/green] has a 1 printed on it, as well as an *infinity* symbol, indicating that any number of dice can be placed there. When we do, we'll gain the resources shown. In this particular game, it's 1 Daimyo seal, 1 mother-of-pearl, and 1 iron. [blue]It's better than nothing![/blue]6twc-main-game-board-well67a6d0553a8bd00twc-main-game-board-well 3
Nekonyancer*Select the Black 1 and place it on the well.*7twc-dice-867a6d0553a8bd10
NekonyancerFirst, we'll resolve the lantern effects. Again, we get these because we chose the *leftmost* die in a row. If you scroll down to our *Domain Board,* you'll see that we have 2 icons next to our lantern: 1 rice and 1 bird. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67ad90425ed774.57804462.jpg[/img] The bird represents the *passage of time.*1jj-custom-controls67a6d0955e6ae00
NekonyancerThis is the [red]*time track.*[/red] Everyone starts with a player token to the left of the track. Whenever we trigger the passage of time, our token will advance. [red]This will determine player order for the next round![/red]2twc-influence-slots67a6d0955e6ae00twc-influence-slots 1
NekonyancerSome advancements on the track require us to pay Daimyo seals, but it's worth it. We'll gain some endgame victory points from this track as well. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67ad90437ff5a1.03169873.jpg[/img]3twc-influence-slots67a6d0955e6ae00
NekonyancerAlright, let's trigger the lantern's effects. *Click on [green]Resolve All![/green]*4twc-choose-action-all67a6d0955e6ae10twc-choose-action-all 3
NekonyancerNext, we'll gather all the resources provided by the well. [green]*Resolve All!*[/green]1twc-choose-action-all67a6d09f94d5a10twc-choose-action-all 3
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, that was our last action for the round![/blue] When our opponent takes their turn, the round will end.1maintitlebar_content67a6d0b46d9f600
NekonyancerThe first round is about to end! Three things will happen. First of all, player order for the next round will be determined based on each player's progress on the [red]*Time track.*[/red]1twc-influence-slots67a6d0c75884000twc-influence-slots 1
NekonyancerIn this case, our opponent has progressed just a little bit farther than we have, so our opponent will go first, and we will go second. This will be shown using the *Heron* figures in the top-left corner.2twc-player-piece-19-front67a6d0c75884000
NekonyancerSecond, each player may trigger the action on each card they placed a *Gardener* on, but only if there's at least 1 die left in the corresponding row.1jj-custom-controls67a6d0cd3741700
NekonyancerIn this case, we have a gardener on one of the cards in the bottom row, and one of the white dice is still here, so we can use that action again!2twc-player-piece-17-front67a6d0cd3741700
NekonyancerUnfortunately, the action requires 4 coins, and we're still broke. Too bad. *Click on [red]Skip[/red]!*3twc-choose-action-skip67a6d0cd3741710twc-choose-action-skip 1
NekonyancerFinally, all the dice are collected and rerolled for the next round!1twc-dice-167a6d0db8835700
Nekonyancer[green]Round 2![/green] This time, our opponent is the first player!1twc-player-piece-18-front67a6d0e2a711900
NekonyancerLet's play through just one more turn together. Examine the available dice and our resources. We want to get as many meeples onto the board as possible. [blue]Any ideas?[/blue]1twc-player-panel-resources-1194135467a6d13d6824300
NekonyancerWell, we really need coins, so high numbers will help us a lot. The highest die is a white die, this area is the best place for a white die! *Select the White 5 and place it here!*2twc-castle-room-main-board-steward-367a6d13d6824310
Nekonyancer*Great!* We'll trigger the middle scroll to get a coin and some resources from the well, then the top scroll to get a Warrior action. [blue]I'll fast-forward through a couple of these steps...[/blue]1twc-main-card-12-front67a6d1870d8d800
NekonyancerOkay, let's place our warrior. We have plenty of iron, so let's put a warrior in the [red]*most expensive*[/red] yard. Remember, each warrior in the expensive yard counts as *two* for scoring at the end of the game! *Click on [red]this yard![/red]*1twc-training-yard-167a6d1a2b791710twc-training-yard-1 1
NekonyancerThat yard gives us a well action and lets us trigger any scroll on the board with a *black* die indicator. [blue]I'll go ahead and click through the Well action for you...[/blue]1twc-choose-action-6267a6d1f09342a00
NekonyancerOkay, next we can trigger any action scroll with a *black* die indicator. [blue]Take a look at our options. What do you think we should do?[/blue]1twc-player-panel-resources-1194135467a6d1fb49ea900
NekonyancerI think you'll agree that the Warrior action on this card is the best option, but we only have 2 iron left, so we'll only be able to afford the cheapest training yard. [green]Hmm... Unless we use Daimyo seals.[/green]2twc-main-card-20-front67a6d1fb49ea900

Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, I think you've seen enough![/blue] The game will continue for a total of 3 rounds. NekonyancerIn addition to points from placed Gardeners, Courtiers, and Warriors, and all the points they gained throughout the game, each player will score: • 1 point for every 5 leftover coins/Daimyo seals. • 1 or 2 points for each resource track with at least 3 or 7 units remaining. • Points according to progress on the Time track.
