Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edeee0b7c3.68466474.jpg[/img] Tikal is an ancient Mayan site located in the jungles of northern Guatamala. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and national park, but only a small fraction of it has been explored so far. There's a lot of work to do! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerEach player is the director of an expedition intent on studying the lost Mayan temples of Tikal. As players explore the jungle, they will discover ancient ruins and priceless artifacts left by the Maya!2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerPlayers earn Prestige by collecting matching sets of *treasures* and by controlling *temples* during four scoring rounds. But be wary - both treasures and temples can change hands during the course of your exploration. [green]The expedition that earns the most Prestige wins the game![/green]3maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer[blue]Each player's turn has two steps:[/blue] *1.* Draw and place a *Terrain Tile,* exploring more of the jungle. *2.* Use 10 Action Points to move explorers, collect treasures, and more. BGA randomly picked us as the first player, so let's get started!4maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerBGA already drew a [red]*Terrain Tile*[/red] for us. The [blue]*number*[/blue] in the corner indicates how many tiles are left in the stack. Now we have to place it somewhere so that it creates a *path* to at least one existing tile.5tkl_terrain_tile_39000tkl_terrains_pile 6 tkl_terrains_nbr 2
NekonyancerA few spaces in the bottom-left corner of the board have already been explored. Paths between them are indicated by *stone blocks.* The more blocks there are, the harder it is for explorers to move between them!6tkl_terrains_nbr000
Nekonyancer*1.* Place the new tile on the indicated hex [blue](see arrow)[/blue]. *2.* Click to *rotate* the tile twice. It should look like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edef0d44e5.02060698.jpg[/img] *3. [blue]Confirm*[/blue] our action at the top!7tkl_terrains_nbr010button_confirm 2 tkl_terrain_tile_3 15
Nekonyancer*Good!* The tile we just placed is a [red]*Temple*[/red] tile. During scoring rounds, players can earn points by *controlling* temples, which means having more *Explorers* on the tile than other players! You'll see for yourself later.1tkl_terrain_tile_3966fb385bec82000tkl_terrain_tile_39 6
NekonyancerNow that we've placed a tile, we can proceed to the next step, which is to spend *10 Action Points* on various actions, all of which are displayed [blue]*here.*[/blue]2tkl_excavate_treasure66fb385bec82000tkl_bring_explorer 2 tkl_move_to_camp 2 tkl_move_to_terrain 2 tkl_uncover_temple 2 tkl_excavate_treasure 2 tkl_exchange_treasure 2 tkl_establish_camp 2 tkl_temple_guard 2
Nekonyancer[blue]*Action #1. Place an explorer on a camp.*[/blue]---Each player has [red]*18 normal explorers*[/red] and a special explorer called the [green]*Expedition Leader*[/green] in their inventory. For 1 Action Point, we can place one on a *Camp,* such as the *Base Camp* in the bottom-left corner of the board.3tkl_bring_explorer66fb385bec82000tkl_bring_explorer 2 panel_p92143487_leader 3 panel_p92143487_explorer 1
Nekonyancer[green]Let's try it![/green] *Click on the [red]Base Camp.[/red]* A little pop-up should appear, allowing us to choose between our Expedition Leader and a normal Explorer. The leader is the one with a hat. :)4tkl_terrain_tile_366fb385bec82000tkl_terrain_tile_4 6
Nekonyancer*Select the Expedition Leader!* ... [red]Nothing happened.[/red] Well, don't worry. It will work when you play a real game! Just *continue* instead. I'll place a couple guys for you.5tkl_terrain_tile_366fb385bec82000tkl_terrain_tile_4 6
Nekonyancer*Okay!* I placed 2 normal Explorers and our Expedition Leader in the Base Camp. This cost us *3* action points, bringing us down to *7.* [blue]Next, let's learn how to move them.[/blue]1tkl_terrain_tile_466fb3865e5ff900
Nekonyancer[blue]*Action #3: Move to an adjacent terrain tile*[/blue]---Explorers can be moved from one tile to another if there is a *path* between them. Again, paths are indicated by *stone markers.* [red]The more markers there are, the harder the path![/red]3tkl_move_to_terrain66fb3865e5ff900tkl_move_to_terrain 2
NekonyancerFor instance, there are two stone markers between [red]*these two tiles.*[/red] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edef303f05.42657077.jpg[/img] Moving an explorer along that path will cost *2 action points.*4tkl_terrain_tile_366fb3865e5ff900tkl_terrain_tile_2 1 tkl_terrain_tile_4 1
NekonyancerHowever, there's only 1 stone marker between [blue]*these two tiles.*[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edef515327.56025637.jpg[/img] Moving along that path will only cost 1 action point.5tkl_cell_4_266fb3865e5ff900tkl_terrain_tile_3 2 tkl_terrain_tile_4 2
NekonyancerThere are no stone markers at all between [red]*these two tiles.*[/red] !!! This does NOT mean movement is free! It means explorers CAN'T move between them!6tkl_cell_4_266fb3865e5ff900tkl_terrain_tile_3 6 tkl_terrain_tile_1 6
NekonyancerLet's try moving! *1.* Select our *Expedition Leader* (the big guy with the hat). *2.* Send them to [red]*this space.*[/red] *3.* Select a normal *explorer* (a small guy) *4.* Send them to the [red]*same space.*[/red] *5. Continue!*7tkl_cell_3_266fb3865e5ff900tkl_terrain_tile_39 6
NekonyancerWe're not done! *1.* Select another normal *explorer* from the *Base Camp.* *2.* Send them [blue]*here.*[/blue] The board should look like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edef6ec2f5.21240642.jpg[/img] If it does, [blue]*"Confirm"*[/blue] your action at the top!8button_confirm66fb3865e5ff910button_confirm 2 tkl_terrain_tile_3 7
NekonyancerGreat! All of that cost us *5 action points.* We have 2 left. Now that we have some explorers on a temple tile, let's do some actual exploring!1tkl_cell_3_266fb387f1e74c00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Action #4: Uncover a new Temple level*[/blue]---If we have at least 1 explorer on a Temple Tile, we can spend 2 action points to uncover a new level of the temple, increasing its number by 1. [green][tip] The number indicates how many points the temple is worth during a Scoring Round![/green]2tkl_uncover_temple66fb387f1e74c00tkl_uncover_temple 2
Nekonyancer[red]Unfortunately, this part doesn't work in Tutorial Mode either.[/red] In a normal game, you can uncover a new level by simply clicking on any Temple tile on which you have at least one explorer. Click on *"Continue."* I'll do it for you.3tkl_cell_3_266fb387f1e74c00tkl_terrain_tile_39 16
Nekonyancer[green]There! Now the temple is more valuable.[/green] The new temple level came from the [red]*"Temples stock,"*[/red] which you should be able to see along the right side of your screen. As you can see, temple numbers can go all the way to *10,* but the supply is very limited for high numbers!1tkl_temple_4666fb38821875000button_endTurn 2 tkl_decks_panel 6
NekonyancerUncovering the new temple level took 2 Action Points, bringing us down to 0. There's nothing else we can do this turn. *Click on [blue]"End turn"[/blue] at the top!*2tkl_temple_4666fb38821875010button_endTurn 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, now it's our opponent's turn![/blue] Just like us, they'll start by placing a new temple tile. Then they can spend up to 10 Action Points.1tkl_terrains_nbr66fb3883d1e7b00
Nekonyancer*Next turn!* *1.* Place the new tile on the indicated hex [blue](see arrow)[/blue]. *2.* Rotate the tile *six times.* It should look like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edef961703.63875325.jpg[/img] *3. [blue]Confirm[/blue]* your action!1player_name_9214348766fb38a0cf9d710button_confirm 2 tkl_terrain_tile_40 15
NekonyancerGood! The tile we placed is a *Ruins* tile. Whenever a Ruins tile is placed on the board, BGA places *treasure tokens* on it equal to the number of masks on the tile. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edefbaedc2.41808531.jpg[/img] [green]In this case, there were four masks, so BGA placed 4 treasure tokens.[/green]1tkl_cell_3_366fb38b3edc8300
NekonyancerWe'll definitely want to pick up some of those treasures soon. But first, I want to teach you more about *temple levels.* Click on *"Continue."* I'll uncover another level of [red]*this temple*[/red]...2tkl_terrain_tile_4066fb38b3edc8300tkl_terrain_tile_39 6
NekonyancerThere! A *"4"* was placed on top! That's right, "placed on top." The 3 did not go back to the [red]*Temples stock*[/red] - it's still there, under the 4. [green]We're down to 8 action points.[/green]1tkl_terrain_tile_4066fb38b9825c700tkl_decks_panel 6
NekonyancerWe can actually perform that action *twice* on a single temple in a single turn, but only if we have at least two explorers on the tile (our Leader counts as an explorer). [green]Let's do it![/green]2tkl_terrain_tile_4066fb38b9825c700
NekonyancerThere! We are down to [green]6 action points.[/green] We've increased the value of this temple quite a bit, so now I'll tell you more about how temples are *scored.*1tkl_terrain_tile_4066fb38bc0089400
NekonyancerThere are three *Volcano* tiles mixed into the stack of tiles. Whenever one is revealed, it triggers a [green]Scoring Round.[/green] In a scoring round, each player can use *10 action points* (without placing a tile) and then score any temples they *control,* meaning they have [red]more explorers present than any other player.[/red] For this, *Expedition Leaders* count as 3 explorers.2tkl_terrains_nbr66fb38bc0089400
NekonyancerSo, if our opponent swoops in with tons of explorers, they'll take advantage of our hard work score [red]*this temple's*[/red] points instead of us! [green]Fortunately, there's a way to prevent this.[/green]3tkl_temple_6166fb38bc0089400tkl_temple_61 6
Nekonyancer[blue]*Action #8: Placing a Temple Guard.*[/blue]---For *5* action points, we can move one explorer on a temple tile to the center of the tile as a *guard,* giving us control of the temple *permanently.* [green]Sounds great, right?[/green]4tkl_temple_guard66fb38bc0089400tkl_temple_guard 2
Nekonyancer[blue]There are three important catches:[/blue] *1.* We can only perform this action if we currently have control of the temple. *2.* Performing this action will permanently remove all our other explorers on the tile from the game (other than the guard). Explorers from other players are not affected. *3.* The temple is *locked* at its current value. Higher levels can no longer be uncovered.5tkl_temple_6166fb38bc0089400
NekonyancerRight now, our opponent doesn't have any explorers here, which means we only need 1 explorer to have control. This is a really good time to place a guard - we won't have to permanently remove any other explorers! First, let's get our valuable Expedition Leader out of the way. *Move our leader to [red]this tile.[/red]*7tkl_terrain_tile_3966fb38bc0089410tkl_terrain_tile_35 6
NekonyancerAlright, let's place a guard! *1.* Select the explorer on the *"5"* temple. *2.* Click on the *center* of the temple. [red]... it didn't work. Well, it will work in a normal game.[/red] *Continue.*1tkl_terrain_tile_3966fb38c2d454100
NekonyancerThat took a lot of action points, but it was definitely worth it. We are guaranteed [green]5 points[/green] from this temple during each of the game's 3 scoring rounds!1tkl_temple_6166fb38c50e37600
NekonyancerOne last thing about guards before we move on: we can only place up to *2* guards during the entire game. *Click on [blue]"End turn."[/blue]*2button_endTurn66fb38c50e37610button_endTurn 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Next turn![/blue] You're already an expert at placing tiles, so I'll place this one for you.1tkl_terrains_nbr66fb38e245e6c00
NekonyancerNext, let's get our hands on some treasure! [blue]*Action #5: Excavating for Treasure*[/blue]---For *3 action points,* a player can take a treasure token from a space where they have at least one explorer. To perform this action a second time on the same space, we'll need a second explorer present.1tkl_excavate_treasure66fb38efc271600tkl_excavate_treasure 2
NekonyancerUnfortunately, this part doesn't work in Tutorial mode. Ill take a token from [red]*this stack*[/red] for you...2tkl_token_back_35_366fb38efc271600tkl_token_back_35_3 6
NekonyancerWhen we took a tile, it flipped over to reveal one of eight types of treasure. It's now in our [blue]*inventory.*[/blue] Each player's inventory is *public knowledge,* so our opponent can see what kind of treasure we got!1panel_p92143487_token_666fb38f53b32900panel_p92143487_token_6 2
NekonyancerDuring [green]scoring rounds,[/green] each player will score points from their accumulated treasures as well as their controlled temples. Each set of *1/2/3* identical treasures is worth *1/3/6* points.2panel_p92143487_token_666fb38f53b32900
NekonyancerTo help gather identical sets of treasures, we can use... [blue]*Action #6: Exchange a treasure*[/blue]---For *3 Action Points,* this action swaps one of our treasures with an opponent's. The opponent cannot refuse this swap.3tkl_exchange_treasure66fb38f53b32900tkl_exchange_treasure 2
NekonyancerOnly treasures that are *NOT* parts of sets can be swapped. In other words, whenever a player has two or more treasures of the same type, those treasures are *safe* from other players.4tkl_exchange_treasure66fb38f53b32900
NekonyancerLet's get back to our turn. We have *7 Action Points* remaining. Since we only have *one* explorer on [red]*this space,*[/red] we can't take another treasure this turn. Hmm. Our opponent has control of several different temples. I think we should place and move some new explorers so we can compete for them! [blue]You already know how to place and move explorers, so I'll do it for you...[/blue]5tkl_token_back_35_266fb38f53b32900tkl_terrain_tile_35 6
NekonyancerIt's our turn again, and our tile turned out to be a [red]*Volcano!*[/red] Again, that means the normal sequence of play is interrupted by a [green]Scoring round![/green]1tkl_terrains_nbr66fb393a3f6ce00tkl_terrains_pile 6
NekonyancerIn a [green]Scoring Round,[/green] the player who drew a volcano uses up to 10 Action Points and then scores points from their controlled temples and treasures. Then the next player can take actions and score points. [blue]When all players have done this, normal play resumes with the placement of the Volcano.[/blue]2tkl_temple_6166fb393a3f6ce00tkl_temple_61 1
NekonyancerTo maximize our points, we need to try and take control of as many temples as we can, even if it's only temporarily! [blue]I'll start by placing a couple new explorers here...[/blue]3tkl_terrain_tile_466fb393a3f6ce00
NekonyancerNext, let's move them! *1.* Select an explorer from the Base Camp. *2.* Move it to [red]*this temple.*[/red] *3. [blue]Confirm![/blue]*1tkl_cell_3_366fb394cf327310tkl_terrain_tile_1 6
NekonyancerOkay, we outnumber our opponent at that temple now. *1.* Select another explorer from the Base Camp. *2.* Move them to [red]*this temple!*[/red] *3. [blue]Confirm![/blue]*1tkl_cell_4_366fb39527189010tkl_terrain_tile_38 6
NekonyancerGood! There's one unguarded temple left, but our opponent's [blue]*leader*[/blue] is there. That means they have the equivalent of *four* explorers! I think we'll let them have that one.1tkl_terrain_tile_266fb3958b3c5c00tkl_terrain_tile_2 6 tkl_resource_22 2
NekonyancerOf course, we don't have to worry about the Guarded temples. We will automatically win [red]*this one,*[/red] and our opponent will automatically win [blue]*this one.*[/blue] That cannot be changed.2tkl_terrain_tile_4066fb3958b3c5c00tkl_terrain_tile_39 6 tkl_terrain_tile_40 7
Nekonyancer[green]Hmm, so what should we do with our last 4 points?[/green] I guess we'll take another *treasure* from the ruins.3tkl_terrain_tile_3566fb3958b3c5c00
Nekonyancer[green]Wow, what luck![/green] It's [blue]*identical*[/blue] to our first treasure, making a set of *2!* This makes them more valuable (3 points) and makes them immune to swaps! With our last action point, I guess we'll put one more explorer on the board. Then we'll score points!1tkl_p92143487_token_6_nbr66fb396d0b3ce00panel_p92143487_token_6 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Looks like we'll earn a total of 12 points...[/blue] - 2 points from control of an unguarded temple. - 2 points from control of another unguarded temple. - 5 points from our guarded temple. - 3 points from a set of 2 identical treasures. *Click on [blue]"End turn."[/blue]*1button_endTurn66fb39709e62810button_endTurn 2
Nekonyancer[green]We're off to a good start![/green] Next, our opponent will use 10 Action Points and score temples/treasures. They can even score the same temples that we did!1player_score_9214348766fb39722d47200
NekonyancerOkay, that's it for the Scoring Round! The normal sequence of play will now resume: we'll at last place a new tile, then use 10 action points. [blue]I'll place the Volcano for you...[/blue]1generalactions66fb398eebea600
NekonyancerBy the way, explorers cannot walk onto volcanoes, nor can any actions be taken there. [red]But hey, they look cool, right?[/red]2tkl_terrain_tile_3166fb39a5a61c500
NekonyancerAs you've no doubt noticed, the jungle is quite vast. How can we efficiently explore distant temples? [blue]*Action #7: Establish a forward camp.*[/blue]---For *5 Action Points,* this action lets us place one of our two forward camps in a [red]*clearing,*[/red] such as the one our opponent placed recently. *Ruins* also become clearings when all their treasures are collected.3tkl_establish_camp66fb39a5a61c500tkl_terrain_tile_37 6 tkl_establish_camp 2
NekonyancerOnce we have a Forward Camp, we can place new explorers there instead of back at the Base Camp. Placing a camp is a bit expensive, but it will save us Action Points in the long run! [green]Let's place one![/green]4tkl_cell_1_466fb39a5a61c500
NekonyancerFirst, we need an explorer at the clearing. Our Leader is the closest. *Move our [blue]Leader[/blue] to the [red]clearing![/red]*5tkl_terrain_tile_3766fb39a5a61c510tkl_terrain_tile_37 6 tkl_resource_1 2
NekonyancerNext, in a real game, you can place a camp by simply clicking on the clearing. [red]I'll have to do that for you, unfortunately.[/red]1tkl_terrain_tile_3766fb39b3a50aa00tkl_terrain_tile_37 16
NekonyancerNow we can place explorers here!1tkl_resource_2066fb39b59648f00
NekonyancerOkay! There's just one action left you tell you about. [blue]*Action #2: Move from one camp to another*[/blue]---For *1 Action Point,* we can move an explorer from one of our Forward camps (or the Base Camp) to another. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edefd9f9c5.04921683.jpg[/img] It's pretty straightforward.1tkl_resource_1066fb39ba52f1800
NekonyancerThat's everything! The game will continue as you've seen until the last tile is drawn and placed, marking the last normal turn of the game. After that, there will be one final Scoring Round. [green]Whoever has the most points wins![/green]2maintitlebar_content66fb39ba52f1800
Nekonyancer[red]If you find the game a bit too random, you may wish to toggle the *Advanced rules* in the game lobby![/red] With these rules, turns are grouped into *rounds.* At the beginning of each round, a number of tiles equal to the number of players is drawn and revealed.3maintitlebar_content66fb39ba52f1800
NekonyancerPlayers will then *bid points* for the privilege of taking a turn. When a player wins an auction, they can pick and place one revealed tile and take the rest of their turn normally. Afterward, a new auction begins, but players who already took a turn during that round can no longer participate. [blue]For more details, check Page 6 of the rulebook![/blue]4maintitlebar_content66fb39ba52f1800
